h WILDLIFE PROGRAMS Wildlife Programs protects wild animals through a range of activities, including 7,943,133 active campaigns on fur and trapping, the most prominent of which seeks to halt Canada's annual slaughter of harp seals The department also oversees programs on captive wildlife, wildlife refuges, endangered species, wildlife contraception, predator control, migratory birds, wild animals as pets, wild horses, marine mammals, and national and international wildlife issues The WILD NEIGHBORS signature program that advises people and municipalities on how to live in harmony with wildlife (such as beaver, Canada geese, raccoons, deer and many other species), and provides suggestions for humane management of conflicts between wild animals and people via a hot-line to assist householders

i PUBLIC AWARENESS OUTREACH CAMPAIGNS, LEGISLATION, AND LITIGATION These departments 13,350,014 are located within the External Affairs Division Our Campaigns department focuses on fur, factory farming, hunting, and animal cruelty In 2006, the department worked to promote the switch to cage-free eggs on college campuses and elsewhere, campaigned against internet and canned hunts, sought to discourage the use of fur by designers, retailers, and the public, and assisted communities trying to address the cruelty of cockfighting, dog fighting, and hog-dog fighting Government Affairs focuses on federal, state and local legislation involving wild, captive, and domestic animals The department educates constituents, the general public, government officials, and others on legislative and regulatory matters concerning animal protection, and alerts concerned parties to legislation that will help, or harm animals Animal Protection Litigation conducts legal campaigns on behalf of animals in state and federal courts The HSUS is involved in over 40 active animal and environmental protection cases, including actions to protect whales, dolphins, manatees, and other wildlife, to fight the traffic in unhealthy puppies from Midwestern puppy mills, to halt pigeon shoots and canned hunts, to improve the treatment of animals in performance spectacles and animals used in research, and to fight and to prevent the mistreatment of animals in factory farms Our Investigations department conducts national and local investigations into cruel and inhumane treatment of companion animals, farm animals, wildlife and animal fighting Recent investigations have uncovered the proliferation of falsely labeled fur on clothing marketed and sold as "faux" by U S retailers, exposed horrible conditions at a battery cage operation run by a major egg supplier, uncovered abuses in the transport, handling, and sale of horses for slaughter, blown the lid on trophy hunting tax scams, led to the prosecution of major figures in illegal dog fighting activities, in cock-fighting, and in hog-dog fights, and documented the cruelty of "canned" hunts where animals are killed in small enclosures
