Neue Formen Der Wissenschaftskommunikation : Eine ür das System der Wissenschaftskommunikation werden seit einiger GÖTTINGER SCHRIFTEN ZUR INTERNETFORSCHUNG FZeit vor dem Hintergrund der so genannten „Zeitschriftenkrise“ massive Änderungsanforderungen vor allem von Bibliotheken und wei teren Hg.: S. Hagenhoff, D. Hogrefe, E. Mittler, öffentlichen Einrichtungen formuliert. Große Potenziale für Modifi kationen M. Schumann, G. Spindler, V. Wittke werden den Informations- und Kommunikationstechno logien zugeschrieben, die geeignet dazu scheinen, die Distribution wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse kostengünstiger und schneller zu erlau ben, als dies mit dem seit Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts etabliertem Kom munikationsweg der papierbasierten Journale möglich ist. Die aktuelle Diskussion um die Veränderungen konzentriert sich insbesondere auf das Schlagwort „Open Access“ mit den zwei grundlegenden Ausgestaltungsvarianten „Green Road“, der parallelen freien Onlinepublikation zu kostenpfl ichtigen Medien, und der „Golden Road“, Neue Formen der dem primären Publizieren in Open-Access-Medien. In der Praxis existieren allerdings zahlreiche, sehr differenzierte Geschäftsmodelle für neue Formen Wissenschaftskommunikation originärer Publikationsdienstleistungen sowie auch ergänzende Angebote. Einige dieser neuen Formen der Wissenschaftskommunikation werden Eine Fallstudienuntersuchung bereits in der Literatur beschrieben, dieses allerdings in Form von Einzelfall- dokumentationen. Hilfreich darüber hinaus wäre ein Untersuchungsraster, welches eine strukturierte Deskription verschiedener Formen der Wissen- schaftskommunikation erlaubt. Eine solche Typologie zu erarbeiten ist ein Ziel Svenja Hagenhoff / Lutz Seidenfaden / des vorliegenden Buches. Die Typologie wird dann genutzt, um ausgewählte Björn Ortelbach / Matthias Schumann neue Dienstleistungen zu beschrieben und anschließend miteinander zu vergleichen. Ein weiteres Ziel des Buches besteht damit darin, einen Beitrag zur systematischen Beschreibung der Realität zu leisten und hierdurch eine Grundlage für fundierte Forschungsaktivitäten zu schaffen. Stellte das Aufkommen der ersten wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften als Ablösung des individuellen Briefwechsels zwischen Wissenschaftlern Mitte des 17. Jahrhun- derts eine erste radikale Innovation dar, so besteht – je nach Sichtweise – das Potenzial oder die Gefahr, dass das heute bekannte System erneut massiv transformiert wird und zukünftig nach gänzlich anderen als den bisher bekannten Spielregeln funktionieren wird. Anlass zu dieser – vielleicht übertriebenen – These bietet die Beobachtung, dass in der jüngeren Vergangenheit, insbesondere seit Ende der 1990er Jahre, zahlreiche Aktivitäten gestartet wurden, die als alternative Angebote zu den Dienstleistungen bisher etablierter Gestalter der Wertschöpfung zwischen Wissensproduzent und Wissensrezipient – dieses sind insbesondere Verlage und Bibliotheken – betrachtet werden können. Einen besonderen Schub haben die Aktivitäten aus der seit dem Jahr 2000 verstärkten Kontroverse im Rahmen der so genannten Zeitschriftenkrise und der damit verbundenen Open-Access-Diskussion erhalten. Auffällig ist es, dass auch die öffentlichen Beiträge dieser Kontroverse häufig Behauptungen enthalten, die jedoch bislang kaum systematisch überprüft wurden, ihnen somit eher eine populistische denn eine (er)klärende Funktion beikommt. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es uns ein Anliegen, mit dem vorliegenden Buch einen Beitrag zur sachlich-wissenschaftlichen Diskussion um das Thema „Veränderung des Systems der Wissenschaftskommunikation“ zu leisten. Diesem Ziel ist unter anderem eine strukturierte Beschreibung des Beobachtbaren dienlich. Wir hoffen, dass die exemplarisch zusammenge- tragenen Fallstudien sowie deren Typologisierung und das Darstellen der daraus erkennba- ren Entwicklungen diesem Zweck auch aus Sicht der Leserinnen und Leser gerecht werden.     The World’s Approach toward Publishing in Springer and Elsevier’s APC-Funded Open Access Journals Hajar Sotudeh and Zahra Ghasempour* Purpose: The present study explored tendencies of the world’s coun- tries—at individual and scientific development levels—toward publishing in APC-funded open access journals. Design/Methodology/Approach: Using a bibliometric method, it studied OA and NOA articles issued in Springer and Elsevier’s APC journals‎ during 2007–2011. The data were gathered using a wide number of sources including Sherpa/Romeo, Springer Author-mapper, Science Direct, Google, and journals’ websites. Findings: The Netherlands, Norway, and Poland ranked highest in terms of their OA shares. This can be attributed to the financial resources al- located to publication in general, and publishing in OA journals in par- ticular, by the countries. All developed countries and a large number of scientifically lagging and developing nations were found to publish OA articles in the APC journals. The OA papers have been exponentially growing across all the countries’ scientific groups annually. Although the advanced nations published the lion’s share of the OA-APC papers and exhibited the highest growth, the underdeveloped groups have been displaying high OA growth rates. Practical Implications: Given the reliance of the APC model on authors’ affluence and motivation, its affordability and sustainability have been challenged. This communication helps understand how countries at differ- ent scientific development and thus wealth levels contribute to the model. Originality/Value: This is the first study conducted at macro level clarify- ing countries’ contribution to the APC model—at individual and scientific- development levels—as the ultimate result of the interaction between authors’ willingness, the model affordability, and publishers and funding agencies’ support.

At the same time the electronic medium also makes possible totally new open access (OA) distribution models, funded by author charges, sponsorship, advertising, voluntary work, etc., where the end product is free in full text to the readers. Although more than 2,000 new OA journals have been founded in the last 15 years, the uptake of open access has been rather slow, with currently around 5% of all peer-reviewed articles published in OA journals. The slow growth can to a large extent be explained by the fact that open access has predominantly emerged via newly founded journals and startup publishers.

He has worked in science publishing since the mid-1970’s. At the beginning of his career, he worked at Elsevier, in The Netherlands, and after a stint in the regional mainstream press moved to London to work subsequently at Academic Press and then Nature. Afterwards, he became involved in BioMed Central, the first commercial open access science publisher. Later, he joined Springer, as director of open access. He then left to help further develop approaches based on the semantic web as a means to accelerate scientific discovery. Since 2009, he is involved in the Concept Web Alliance, as one of the initiators. In this exclusive interview with EuroScientist, Jan Velterop gives his views on how scholarly publishing is going to play a role in the evolution of research towards more open science, and ultimately speed up the scientific process. Science=business Velterop points to issues affecting the way research is being done, which relate to what he calls the “commercial side of science.” He explains: “I am against the way that copyright is being used in science.” It is not, as was the original purpose of copyright, designed to ensure that authors kept on creating.
