Kozak www.stedna.org 3 St. Edna ~ Sharing The Solemnity of Christ the King Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Today we celebrate Christ the King of the Universe. It is the final Sunday of the liturgical year. The last few weeks of the liturgical year have an eschatological bend to them. Meaning they are concerned with the final things of death, judgment, heaven, and hell. The readings culminate in Christ the King of the Universe. These readings about our own judgment provide an opportunity to reflect on our lives and how we can love in a deeper way. It also provides hope and a reminder of the guarantee that if we live a good life by loving God and loving others we will be with God in Heaven for all eternity. It is a dynamic of acknowledging we need God’s help to do better and a commitment to do better through God’s grace, love, and hope of being with Him for all eternity. Today’s Gospel needs to be taken seriously. The starkness of being a sheep or a goat is dependent on how we love others. A measure of our spiritual life and love of God is how we love the poor and vulnerable. If we treat them tenderly and lovingly, then we are doing well. If we do not, then we can reflect on why and what needs to change. The Eucharist commits us to the poor. In our reception of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, we engage in the process of becoming more like Him. The corporal works of mercy, which are mentioned in the Gospel, are great ways to love others, especially the poor. Living out the corporal works of mercy divinizes us or makes us more like Christ, especially in His kingly role. We are here to build up the kingdom of God. In other words, to be a sheep of Christ and help others to become sheep of Christ. Given this reading and the fact that we are about to start a new liturgical new year, it is time to consider new liturgical year resolutions. A few options are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. For prayer start with 10-15 minutes a day. This can be personal prayer, reading Scripture, a spiritual book, or a formal prayer such as the rosary. Fasting helps discipline your passions. Fasting on Friday in some way is a great thing because it is a day of penance and prayer. You can fast from meat, alcohol, the internet, or do some extra prayer. If you experience temptation and struggle in a certain area know that with Christ it is possible to overcome. When experiencing temptation in your thoughts tell yourself, “I want happiness not (specific vice)”. This helps intellect dialogue with your will using reason rather than suppressing it and trying to reject the temptation. Suppressing your passions is not healthy, but engaging them helps you reason with them. Almsgiving fights consumerism, especially in the Christmas season. St. Philip Neri said, “in giving alms to the poor we must act as good ministers of the Providence of God.” In other words, it is a reminder that things cannot fulfill us, only God can fulfill us, and that the poverty of the modern world is moral not material and we have an obligation to help the poor out of love. Almsgiving helps you receive what God wants to give you, so be generous to the poor and remember that love covers a multitude of sins. Now is the time to make a liturgical new year resolution in prayer, fasting, or almsgiving. In doing so we will become more Christlike and when the day of judgment comes, we will be a sheep of Christ and hear Jesus tell us, “come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Isaac Doucette, Seminarian 4 November 22, 2020 St. Edna ~ Parish MASS ON THANKSGIVING DAY There will be a Mass on Thanksgiving Day at St. Edna.
