LIFE EVERLASTING

The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inlicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God. Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ’s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is conident in such prayer, just as he is conident in the everlasting support of and God the Father. And there’s that “everlasting” word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting— albeit meaningless—question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn’t an issue for the risen children of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father’s words to Moses. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

November 6, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 4 NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK

WASHINGTON—The in the U.S. will celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week, November 6-12. This annual event is a special time for parishes in the U.S. to foster a culture of vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life.

Pope Francis, in his homily at the inal Mass of the 2016 World Youth Day in Krakow, encouraged the youth of the world to open their hearts to Jesus. "Don't be afraid to say 'yes' to him with all your heart, to respond generously and to follow him!" said Pope Francis. "Don't let your soul grow numb, but aim for the goal of a beautiful love which also demands sacriice."

National Vocations Awareness Week, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, is designed to help promote vocation awareness and to encourage young people to ask the question: "To what vocation in life is God calling me?" Parish and school communities across the nation are encouraged to include, during the irst week in November, prayer and special activities that focus on vocation awareness.

"Prayer for vocations is the responsibility of the entire Church. Often times we think that vocations will come from somewhere else, and yet God invites us to consider that he is raising up vocations to priesthood, consecrated life, and the permanent diaconate from within our own communities, even our own families" said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, bishop designate of Arlington, Virginia, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. "Our willingness to invite those within our own communities and families to consider that God may be calling them to Priesthood or consecrated life will bear abundant fruit in the Church and bring great joy and happiness to those called. We want what is best for our children; even more so does God desire their happiness."

Research suggests that community encouragement plays an important role in the discernment process. "Following God's will is the greatest adventure any person can experience," said Fr. Luke Ballman, USCCB's associate director of Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. "Fear of losing something holds many people back from responding generously to God, and yet it is when we embrace the adventure wholeheartedly for ourselves or those whom we love that we experience joy unlike anything we have known thus RENEW MY CHURCH far in our lives."

November 6, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 6 RESOURCES FOR THE JUBILEE OF MERCY: THE SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY

The spiritual works of mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these spiritual works of mercy guide us to”help our neighbor in their spiritual needs” (USCCA).

The seven spiritual works of mercy are listed below. After each work of mercy there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives. Have your own suggestions? Let us know @USCCB using the hashtag #mercyinmotion!

COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL

Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life and turn to him along our way.

• “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise” (Prov 19:20) • In the paradox of the Cross of Christ, “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength” (1 Cor 1:25) • Has someone asked you for advice? Orient your response to Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. • Follow Christ with the witness of your life so that others may see God’s love revealed in your actions. • Accompany a friend who is struggling with belief in joining a parish group for service or faith formation; share a book you found useful in dealing with your friend’s faith concern; and worship at Sunday Mass.

INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT

Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith.

• Go on a service trip or a short term mission trip. No time? Donate to support someone on their service trip. • Volunteer to help with religious education programs at your parish. • Invite someone to go to Mass with you this weekend. • Know your faith! Read through the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults to ind out more about the Catholic faith and how to live it.

ADMONISHING THE SINNER

Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others ind their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.

• In humility, we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times. • Don’t judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt. 7:1-2). • When you correct someone, don’t be arrogant. We are all in need of God’s loving correction. • We should journey together to a deeper understanding of our shared faith. • “Remove the wooden beam from your eye irst; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye” (Mt 7:5)

COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL

Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren’t sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference.

• Lend a listening ear to those going through a tough time. • Make a home cooked meal for a friend who is facing a dificult time. • Write a letter or send a card to someone who is suffering. • A few moments of your day may make a lifetime of difference to someone who is going through a tough time.

November 6, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 7

FORGIVING INJURIES

Forgiving others is dificult at times because we do not have God’s limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

• Let go of grudges. • Saying sorry is something we learn as kids, but how often do we really mean it? Forgiveness transforms hearts and lives. • Participate in the Sacrament of Penance. • Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

BEARING WRONGS PATIENTLY

Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit.

• Frustrated with someone? Step away from the situation, take a few deep breaths, and pray the Our Father, asking God for patience.

PRAYING FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God’s care.

• Request a Mass offering for a friend or family member who is going through a tough time. • Request a Mass offering for a friend or family member who has passed away. • Keep your own book of prayer intentions, writing down the names of those who you are keeping in your prayers. • Ask a friend or family member if there is anything you can pray for them about. • Through prayer, entrust your cares and concerns for those around you to God.

November 6, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 8 WITNESS OF FAITH

Thank you to Pamm and Dave Ryniec, in the parish since 2002, for submitting this powerful faith testimonial about Pam’s sister-in-law, Diane Johnson.

This is a story about my sister-in-law, Diane Johnson, who has been ighting cancer for two years. On the night of Saturday, September 17, we received a call late to say Diane was going back into the hospital, as she was in a lot of pain. We went over about 3 p.m. because she wanted to talk to us about a couple of things. They were setting up hospice so she could go home the next day. As we sat there, she told me what she wanted done, but the one thing she really wanted was to receive the Last Rites from a Catholic priest. Diane was at St. Alexius in Hoffman Estates, a Catholic hospital. Around 5:30 p.m., her pain was getting very bad so her son asked for priest. About one a half hours later, they sent us the chaplain and she said some prayers with him.

About an hour later, she took a turn for the worst. I went to the desk and told the staff that we needed a Catholic priest for Last Rites. The desk staff worked on this for about an hour only to tell me that one could not get there until morning. At this time, we knew she would not make it.

I called every Catholic Church in Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg and received no answers. My last call was to my priest, Father Ryan. I left a message. With God’s help he called me back and told us he would be on his way.

I told Diane, who must have heard me because it was really getting bad, her breathing was very labored. But my prayers were answered when Father Ryan came into the room.

Diane was surrounded by brothers and sisters and children as she came from a large family. There were about 20 of us there. Father Ryan give Diane the Last Rites, which was a very special spiritual moment. This would be very hard to explain to anyone, but the feeling in the room was like something came to all of us.

After Father Ryan left, passing her one brother who had just arrived, Diane passed right after receiving the Last Rites.

I cannot thank Father Ryan for everything he did that night, as Diane’s last wish was granted. God answered my prayers when Father Ryan called back and dropped everything and came to the hospital. We cannot thank Father Ryan enough for what he did and said to Diane and all of her family.

BRING A VETERAN TO MASS NEXT WEEKEND!

Next weekend, November 12-13, a Blessing of Veterans will be offered at each of the seven weekend Masses. At the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday Masses on November 13, the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band will offer a special tribute to Veterans. If you are a Veteran, please join us! If you have a family member of friend who is a Veteran, bring them to Mass!

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which oficially took place on November 11, 1918 in the 11th hour. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. www.military.com/veterans-day/history-of-veterans-day.html

Sponsor an individual. Choose a resident from Mt. St. Joseph or make a cash donation for residents at Lexington. Gift cards for food are not necessary, but a gift ensures an elderly person will be remembered during this holiday season.

Stop by the table to sign up or learn more about the program, or call Jane Clery at (847) 370-8933 with any questions you may have.

November 6, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Parish Page 14 ST. FRANCIS DE SALES PARISH SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY 10TH ANNUAL SPIRIT WALK—SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

On Wednesday, September 28, our parish school students, parents, volunteers, and local business sponsors gath- ered to celebrate the school’s 10th Annual Spirit Day. The fundraiser event unites our parish school community with an inspirational prayer service led by Father Ryan, pep rally featuring performances by each grade, a cultural arts program, and Spirit Walk through the local neighborhood. This year, members of the Knights of Columbus Queen of Peace Council #3954 led the Spirit Walk, and ireighters at the Lake Zurich Fire Department greeted students as they marched past the station. The cultural arts program featured this year was The World of Robot- ics. The presentation featured a video about how robots are used by a variety of professions in our world today. The students got to see a few robots in action as well—their favorite being the robotic dog!

Spirit Day is St. Francis de Sales School PTO’s largest event fundraiser of the year. It would not be possible without many volunteers and the generosity of business sponsors, family pledges, and many parishioners who generously donated after Mass for our Spirit Day collections. Net proceeds from the event topped $34,000, all of which will be used to continue to keep our technology programs cutting edge.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all in our parish community for your support of Spirit Day! As our students will proudly tell you, we are...All for One and One for All in Jesus Christ!

2016 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

The people of St. Francis de Sales have responded generously to the Annual Catholic Appeal, clearly demonstrating their willingness to bring the power of God’s mercy to a world in need. Please convey to your community my admiration for their willingness to sacriice in a way that beneits others and transforms the world through Christ’s loving presence. I am inspired by their sense of responsibility for others, a sentiment that is shared by all the many beneiciaries of their generosity. I will remember them in prayer and at the Lord’s Table. Their prayers for me are appreciated, and I am heartened by their remembrance of me.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Archbishop Blase J. Cupich
