The following objectives were addressed: 1) analysis of the richness of common names of Brazilian fishes; 2) reconstruction of time series of marine catches; 3) modelling of trophic interactions off northeastern Brazil; and 4) assessment of fishing policies. The analysis of common names indicated a high richness of names per species (average = 6) and the use of the same common name for different species, with a negative impact on the accuracy of catch statistics. The reconstruction of catch time series was based on landings from national yearbooks, and from ICCAT and FAO's databases (1978-2000), allowing for the detection of 'fishing down the food web' in northeastern Brazil. The trophic model estimated a total biomass for this ecosystem of 222 tonnes-km"2 (excluding detritus), and indicated a low degree of omnivory and the high importance of detritus. Simulations for 2001-2028 indicated that current fishing effort is unsustainable for lobsters and swordfish; however, the model inadequately described the dynamics of swordfish, tunas, and other large pelagics, which have large distribution areas. The simulation of optimum fishing policies led to a diverse fleet when ecosystem health was emphasized. If the main objective was economic or social (or a combination of both and ecosystem health), manual collection of coastal resources, and demersal industrial fisheries could be boosted, while the lobster and longline fisheries should be phased out. A 50% reduction in effort for lobster fisheries would not produce significant changes in lobster biomass; a reduction in effort to the 1978 level (JMSY) would lead to biomass recovery. The instability of institutions responsible for fisheries management in Brazil has had a deleterious impact on the resources. This negative impact is expected to increase due to the current split of responsibility between two institutions with diverse agendas. An improvement in the collection system of catch statistics is recommended, which would consider a standardized set of common names, as well as gathering information on biological, economic, and social components of this ecosystem and its fisheries.     BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 49(1-2): 270-279, 1991 SEXUAL MATURATION AND REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF ELEDONE MASSYAE, VOSS 1964 (CEPHALOPODA: OCTOPODIDAE) IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL Jose Angel Alvarez Perez and Manuel Haimovici ABSTRACT E/edone massyae is a small benthic octopus found along Argentina and Southern Brazil. Maturation and reproductive cycle were studied based on 226 females and III males that were caught at different times of the year with trawl nets on the shelf and upper slope off Rio Grande do Sui, between 3D· and 34OS. Females started to mature in the spring and attained advanced stages in the summer at a wide range of sizes. Neither fully mature nor spent females were found. Spawning is likely to take place during late summer on rough bottoms, at some distance from the trawling areas. Spermatangia were found within the ovary of maturing females mainly in spring. Fecundity ranged from 27 to 126, with a mean of 79, and was not influenced by female body size. Male maturation started in autumn at smaller body sizes than in females. Spermatophores were found in the spermatophoric sac from the end of autumn onwards, and the most advanced gonadal stages occurred in January. Mating seems to occur principally in spring. Eledone massyae is a small octopod with a known distribution ranging from southern Argentina to Rio de Janeiro (Voss, 1964). The species was first recorded in Brazilian waters by Massy (1916) as Moschites brevis Massy, 1916, then re- described as Eledone massyae by Voss (1964). In southern Brazil, this species was caught in bottom trawls on the continental shelf and upper slope between 40 and 350 m {Haimovici and Andriguetto, 1986; Perez and Haimovici, MS)I, frequently together with a congeneric species Eledone gaucha Haimovici, 1988.

This study is the first that experimentally tests feeding preferences of A. pisonii, as well as the first to test experimentally whether chemical composition of food resources is responsible for food selection. Feeding preferences were determined among a variety of plant, algal, and animal resources available in the field both in Florida and Belize, using multiple-choice feeding assays, where male and female crabs simultaneously were offered a variety of food items. To test whether chemistry of food resources was responsible for feeding preferences, chemical extracts of food resources were incorporated in an agar-based artificial food, and used in feeding assays. Results of feeding assays suggest that crabs prefer animal matter from ∼ 2.5 to 13× more than other available resources, including leaves of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle, which contribute the most to their natural diet.

    Metamorphoses: Bioinvasions in the Mediterranean Sea 2 7 B. S. Galil and Menachem Goren Abstract Six hundred and eighty alien marine multicellular species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, with many establishing viable populations and dispersing along its coastline. A brief history of bioinvasions research in the Mediterranean Sea is presented. Particular attention is paid to gelatinous invasive species: the temporal and spatial spread of four alien scyphozoans and two alien ctenophores is outlined. We highlight few of the dis- cernible, and sometimes dramatic, physical alterations to habitats associated with invasive aliens in the Mediterranean littoral, as well as food web interactions of alien and native fi sh. The propagule pressure driving the Erythraean invasion is powerful in the establishment and spread of alien species in the eastern and central Mediterranean. The implications of the enlargement of Suez Canal, refl ecting patterns in global trade and economy, are briefl y discussed.
