FROM THE DESK OF DEACON TOM “Teach My People to Pray” I am excited. You are part of our church. Our church is part of the diocese. Our diocese is part of all the dioceses across the United States. We are all being asked to pray together, hear the same messages, pray the same prayers in the same way, and listen to God speak to us. How awesome is this! Starting this weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the Church year, we embark on a new evangelization. This will be a six year program initiated by our Bishop, David Ricken, who is chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis for the United States. The title of the program is “Teach my People to Pray.” Here is how it will work. We are asking for you to devote one additional hour a month to pray before Our Lord. Every church in the diocese is asked to have a Holy Hour devoted to prayer. If you prefer an evening time you may to join us at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral on the second Wednesday of every month from 7 pm to 8 or 8:15 pm. Beginning December 10th. If you prefer a daytime hour please join us the third Thursday of every month from Noon to 1 pm at St. John the Evangelist starting December 18th. The hour will begin with an introductory chant and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament followed by a greeting and opening prayer. Three readings will be read followed by sacred silence for meditation. We will then pray intercessions followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. (This includes a song/chant, incensation, the Blessing with the Holy Eucharist, and the Divine Praises.) The Holy Hour will end with a recessional song, typically “Holy God We Praise Thy Name.” You can download your own copy of the Holy Hour by going to www.gbdioc.org, which is the homepage for the diocese. Then go to Departments and Offices, Office of the Bishop and scroll down to Eucharistic Holy Hour Guide, or click on New Evangelization on the right near the top, and scroll down to Eucharistic Holy Hour Guide. Feel free to print your own copy. If you do not have access to this, we will have worship aides available for you to follow. Please accept this invitation to pray together as a church. The staffs at both churches cooperated in providing either a daytime or evening hour. We separated them into the second Wednesday or third Thursday to space them out. You might find that you can attend both. For those of you who are homebound, let the church offices know if you want a worship aid mailed to you so that you can participate as well. May God’s abundant mercy continue to bless you, your family, and friends. Hopefully I will see you in church. Deacon Tom We encourage everyone to join us in praise and adoration of our Blessed Lord.
