According to Al Clark, the creative team didn’t want to build the movie around period songs, but they thought that music could play a role, and the songs are used to accompany a number of montages. Clark says the creative team imagined that the film was set in Anzac Day 1965, and took songs from that period, which were then re-recorded by contemporary artists “so it didn’t just feel like an action replay.” Director Ogilvie wanted a pipe band for the Anzac Day March, because of its echoes from his own country town childhood in Goulburn - the Caledonia Pipes and Drums came up from Canberra to play - and he chose the Toselli Serenata for the ballroom dancing sequence as a way of creating an air of wistfulness in the montage that follows (Ogilvie scored a bronze medal for his ballroom dancing in his Goulburn years). Russell Crowe recorded a version of the protest song Eve of Destruction for possible use in the film, but no place could be found for it (Al Clark commentary track). As a piece of music trivia, the band that features at the evening dance contained two of the Wiggles, Jeff and Anthony, who were in the Cockroaches at the time (the band starts by performing Let’s Dance). (Al Clark, DVD commentary). The Cockroaches have a detailed wiki here. A soundtrack album and a couple of spin off singles were designed to promote the film, though without any impact on the box office. The Proclaimers’ version of Roger Miller’s King of the Road did however peak at #78 in Australia, according to the song’s wiki here, and it charted in the top ten in the UK and Germany. The Cockroaches are featured as the band at the night town dance, though the two numbers they perform didn’t help the band’s career - the 45 release of Here Comes that Feeling, with I Wanna Be With You as the B side, did no business (the songs didn’t make the 23 tracks in the Cockroaches’ “Best of” CD release) (Below: the 45 release and “Best of” release) David Bowie End Credits Song and Lyrics: The David Bowie song which runs over the end credits was being recorded by him in Sydney at the time the film was being made. EP Al Clark knew Bowie a little because he nearly did the score for 1984, which Clark produced, and he was in Absolute Beginners, which Clark EP’d. Clark rang Bowie on the off chance he might be able to offer a song, and he was working on a couple, with Betty Wrong the one used in the film. Lyrics as they are heard in the film: ‘Till the sun blisters and sprays And every lamb ceases to graze When the kiss of the comb Tears my face from the bone CHORUS I'll be your light When the shadows fall down the walls Then life will be done And it just won't matter at all I was carved from a hand Nurtured on grime, goodwill and screams Now your breath fills my step Now there is you ‘till life is gone CHORUS But I'll be your light When the shadows fall down the walls Then life will be done And it just won't matter at all I'll roll your ball Till the stars can't make me cry Then life will be done And it just won't matter at all Not at all... (Guitar-based solo) When the kiss of the comb Tears my face … (guitar-based solo and fade out) Live Action Music: As noted above, the Canberra Caledonia Pipes & Drums lead the Anzac Day parade, and the Cockroaches’ turn up at the evening dance. (Below: stills from the movie of the pipe band - only the drum major scores a close up - and the Cockroaches, who are only seen in wide shot). Composer Martin Armiger: Composer Martin Armiger had done one short forty minute film, Drac, in 1972, before doing Pure Shit in 1975.

WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

"This album is the culmination of everything I have learnt so far packed together on one record," says Stephen Cummings of his new album LOVE-O-METER. "It has some slick pop and rock songs and some funky things, not forgetting my trademark twisted bittersweet ballads." Stephen Cummings’ 2004 album, Close Ups was a highlight of his incredible career. It is an acoustic reworking of some of his best known and favourite songs, going right back to his first EP with The Sports. Few artist catalogues have been revisited and reinvigorated with such imagination. Close Ups prompted Stephen to try some different styles and flavours on LOVE-O-METER. The textures are rich with a depth of sentiment that can only be garnered from experience. The Melbourne singer-songwriter first experienced success when his band, The Sports clocked up three platinum albums and broke into the US and UK Top 40 Charts. Since then he has concentrated on solo albums, most of which investigate the complicated pathways of love and contain a terrifyingly high irony quotient. LOVE-O-METER is Stephen's 15th solo album and received a kick-start when Cummings was granted Project Fellowship funding from the Australia Council. LOVE-O-METER charts the course of a romance. "It has a sort of story format to it," Stephen explains. "It's about the idea of romantic love and, you know, lost love and lost love found again and dealing with all the clichés and pitfalls of romance… Originally I wrote and recorded a series of monologues and conversations that linked the songs, but ultimately decided that listeners might find this distracting.” The album starts with "I Need You Tonight", an infectious pop song with a massed fuzz tone and vocals worthy of ELO.

  • ANDREW PENDLEBURY Biography
ANDREW PENDLEBURY Biography Frequently cited as one of the finest guitarists in the nation, Andrew Pendlebury has always seemed destined towards a career in music. From age four he studied violin under the auspicious direction of Nathan Gutman, and at an early age played Vivaldi and Bach with the prowess of someone far beyond his tender years. Andrew is the son of two celebrated Australian artists, Laurence Scott Pendlebury and Nornie Gude . It is little wonder that Andrew also possesses a great talent with the brush, and that his sister Anne was encouraged in her career as an actress with stage and TV credits. After leaving school Andrew set about forging a career for himself in the art world. He held a number of successful exhibitions of his impressionist style works, but music still held his attention. Exposed to Django Reinhardt by a friend of his father who was a dance band guitarist in WW2, and excited by the new sounds evolving from players like Jimi Hendrix bursting onto the scene, Andrew began to focus his creative energy into the guitar. Despite his early classical training, Andrew is a self-taught guitarist and he set about creating a voice for himself through the instrument. He was enthused by players like Lenny Breau, Les Paul, James Burton, Jimmy Bryant and Chet Atkins, but like the painter is inspired by other artforms, Andrew also finds inspiration in the work of many styles of music and instruments. He has broad tastes ranging from a great appreciation of trumpet player Miles Davis to his pop sensibilities towards the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

  • Studies in Contemporary Australian Film Music Sydney: Australian Film Television and Radio School, 1998 ISBN 1 876 35100 4, Pp
Reviews 87 Sweethearts of Rhythm, while not being an overtly feminist book or expressly placed by its author in a feminist tradition, ends on an indisputably feminist note. At the end of Chapter Four, Dreyfus confronts the issue of the sex discrimination which is evident in the lives, attitudes and events covered in all the chapters. The confrontation is brief but important. Women both benefitted from being women in a men's world, where they were a novelty, and suffered from their situation, especially from the projections of masculine sexual wishful thinking, not to mention the scornful denigration which some men felt the urge to express. Dreyfus implies that the male dominance of the music profession which continues even today means that there is a need for the inspiration provided by knowledge of intrepid women musicians of the past. I find this book extremely informative and very pleasing. The times of all-girls bands are brought alive for the reader by the inclusion of well-chosen quotations from musicians, managers and the media, as well as by quantities of photographs, newspaper cuttings and programmes scattered over the pages. Sometimes the effect can be a little confusing, as one searches for the appropriate caption to an illustration, but there is also a certain charm of authenticity about the pages that resemble those of a private scrapbook or photo album. While being popular in tone rather than 'musicological,' Sweethearts of Rhythm is well researched and the research is well documented, especially in the footnotes which are clear, concise and accurate. The Select Bibliography is less satisfying, not as regards content, but as regards accuracy in the section entitled 'Books and Chapters in Books.' This section is riddled with inconsistencies in the use of capitals in book titles.
