Support for Killarney’s Role

21/04/2020 Dear Greg,

I am writing to offer my support for the long-term continuation of motorsport activities at the Killarney International Racing Circuit. This historic South African circuit, which holds a current FIA Grade 6R licence, has been in operation for more than 70 years, including hosting a Grand Prix event in 1962, and more recently the finale of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The strategic vision that has been outlined to develop and expand the circuit and its facilities over the next 25 years will ensure that Killarney continues to play an important role in the region for many years to come, both in motorsport and for advancing road safety.

Yours sincerely,

Jean Todt

Dear Greg,

As you know, my love for motorsport goes back to when I was a young boy and it is now fifty years old. I have been involved in racing one way or another since 1973. However, the support I would like to give to the Killarney racetrack is not driven by my passion but more by the knowledge I developed in so many years. I am a pragmatic person, and the facility that the Killarney circuit has, is well worthy to fight for not only for sentimental and emotional reasons. After reading carefully the strategy document, I can say without a doubt, that the track is in a way a rare gem. As a member of the FIA Circuit Commission, I am well aware that there are many racetracks around the world, and, many new are being built every year. The point is, they are new. They don’t have the history and, more important, the layout of the old days. History, nowadays, is a more and more valuable asset and one of the few things that one cannot buy with money. Therefore, it would be an “Historical Sacrilege” not to keep alive a facility like Killarney. Goodwood is the only race circuit, to my knowledge, which has the same period configuration as it was in the sixties, and now hosts the most prestigious historic event in the world with a turn-over of several millions GBP. Historic racing is a fast growing filed and it generates an incredible amount of money. After my long career, where I took part to more than 500 professional races including racing in Formula One and winning the 24 hours of Le Mans five times, I now cover several roles in the governance of motorsport. One of them is being a member of the FIA Historic Commission, and I know how valuable a “old” racetrack is. Moreover, South Africa has a long a great history in motorsport which contributed as well to is worldwide image. Having said that, you have my outmost support in pursuing the goal of keeping the Killarney track alive and I really hope you succeed!

Respectfully yours,

Emanuele Pirro

Dear Greg

Support For Killarney International Race Complex

I would like to aoffer my personal support to your efforts, and those of Killarney race-track, to acquire a long-term lease extension. I have been blessed to enjoy a long and varied career in motorsport, spanning six decades after a start in club racing in England, through Formula One and Formula 5000 to Can-Am and sports-car racing. During my career I was fortunate to race with a number of factory teams including Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin, Porsche, BMW, Lola and Chevron and to win a number of big events, including the , the Kyalami Nine-Hours twice, Daytona 24 Hours, Sebring, Spa, the Nurburgring etc. along with two class wins at Le Mans during my 15 appearances at the 24-hour race, plus three USA F5000 championships. Some of my happiest memories however are from racing in South Africa and at Killarney with the Team Gunston Chevrons in the Springbok Series, winning the Series in 1970/71. Killarney is a diamond in motorsport terms. Run by a club for the benefit of the wider community, as most tracks were during the last century, it enjoys all the low-cost advantages of being a not-for-profit facility. It is also unusually situated to benefit from the burgeoning contemporary interest in historic motorsport, where the UK’s annual Goodwood Revival attracts over 200,000 spectators. When added to the beautiful surrounds of Cape Town, and its iconic Table Mountain, Killarney could play a very important role in the global economy of motorsport. I have reviewed the Strategy Document which will position this legendary circuit to be around for many years in the future. I look forward to racing on it again before too long.

With my personal best wishes

Howden Ganley Dr Greg Mills, President, Western Province Motor Club (WPMC) April2020

Dear Greg,

I am delighted to be able to offer my personal support to the efforts to acquire along-term lease for Killarney race-track, a feature of global motorsport for more than an astonishing 70 years. I have been involved in motorsport since the late 1950’s in a variety of capacities. These offer a personal insight into the value of a circuit complex such as Killarney. I started as a journalist, first at school, a role that continues today. As a driver I raced first in New Zealand and later in Europe in Formula 3 and Formula 5000 before participating in 41 Grands Prix for BRM, March, Williams, and Maki, and in sports cars for Matra, Mirage, and Chevron. I had originally found my footing in England as the fourth employee of McLaren Cars. After my professional driving career concluded, I started TIGA racing cars, which produced more than 400 chassis from Formula Ford to Group C. And finally I have maintained an active interest in the administration of the sport, as Director and Secretary of the British Racing Drivers Club, as well as Director of the subsidiary Silverstone Circuits Ltd, promoters of the British Grand Prix. I also served the maximum term as President of the F1 Grand Prix Drivers Club, formerly known as the Club International des Anciens Pilotes du Grand Prix, an association for Grand Prix drivers who have scored World Championship points. Without the facilities that the likes of Killarney offer, motorsport and engineering expertise that both supports and feeds from it would not survive. We should also recognize theenormous economic benefits such facilities bring to their regions.

With my best wishes,

Howden Ganley
