This section features some of the religious scientists who appear in different entries on these Faith and Science pages. Some of these scientists are well-known, others less so. Many are Catholic, many are not. Most are Christian, but some are not. Some of these scientists of faith have lived saintly lives. Many scientists who are faith-full tend to describe science as an effort to understand the works of God and thus to grow closer to God. Quite a few describe their work in science almost as a duty they have to seek to improve the lives of their fellow human beings through greater understanding of the world around them. But the people featured here are featured because they are scientists, not because they are saints (even when they are, in fact, saints). Scientists tend to be creative, independent-minded and confident of their ideas. Agnesi, Maria Gaetana (1718-1799) Catholic Christian A child prodigy who obtained education and acclaim for her abilities in math and physics, as well as support from Pope Benedict XIV, Agnesi would write an early calculus textbook. Herta AYRTON 1854-1923, Née Marks: the Electric Arc, 1902
Philippa Fawcett Collection: Brief notes on some of the books in the collection Mary Steadman ALDIS (née Robinson) 1838-1897: Consider the Heavens: A Popular Introduction to Astronomy 1895 - an elementary introduction to astronomy. The Author Mary Robinson was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and worked as a children’s governess. She married William Steadman Aldis in 1863 and they had three children. She moved to Auckland, New Zealand, in 1884 when her husband was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Auckland University College. She wrote an elementary guide to mathematics entitled The Giant Arithmos in 1882, aimed at children. Aldis campaigned for the right of women to receive higher education, specifically in the sciences and mathematics. She was active in the suffrage movement in New Zealand, and by correspondence with activists in Britain. Aldis returned with her husband to England in 1894 and died three years later. Herta AYRTON 1854-1923, née Marks: The Electric Arc, 1902. This book was a comprehensive treatment of contemporary knowledge of the electric arc, as well as an account of new phenomena Ayrton had discovered. The Author Ayrton was educated at a family-owned school, but went to work at 16. She won a scholarship to read mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge. Through taking a course in electrical engineering, she met her husband Professor William Ayrton. They had two children. She was elected MIEE (Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers) in 1899 (the only woman until 1958). She developed a fan to disperse poison gas in trenches in the First World War. Ayrton was an active supporter of the suffrage movement. -

Graney A True Demonstration Bellarmine and the Stars as Evidence Against Earth’s Motion in the Early Seventeenth Century In 1615 Robert Cardinal Bellarmine demanded a “true demonstra- tion” of Earth’s motion before he would cease to doubt the Coperni- can world system. No such demonstration was available because the geocentric Tychonic world system was a viable alternative to the he- liocentric Copernican system. On the contrary, recent work concern- ing early observations of stars suggests that, thanks to astronomers’ misunderstanding of the images of stars seen through the telescope, the only “true demonstration” the telescope provided in Bellarmine’s day showed the earth not to circle the Sun. This had been discussed by the German astronomer Simon Marius, in his Mundus Iovialis, just prior to Bellarmine’s request for a “true demonstration.” In the early seventeenth century, careful telescopic observa- tions made by skilled astronomers did not support the heliocentric world system of Copernicus, but rather the geocentric world sys- tem of the great Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. This was because early telescopic astronomers did not understand the limitations of their telescopes, which produced spurious views of stars. Since they failed to realize this, they concluded that the stars were not suffi- ciently distant to be compatible with the Copernican system.1 logos 14:3 summer 2011 70 logos In April 1615, in a letter offering his opinion on the Copernican world system, Robert Cardinal Bellarmine wrote: I say that if there were a true demonstration that the sun is at the center of the world and the earth in the third heaven, and that the sun does not circle the earth but the earth circles the sun, then one would have to proceed with great care in explaining the Scriptures that appear contrary, and say rather that we do not understand them then that what is demonstrated is false. -
