2 President’s Report

Well, what a different world we find at the end of the 2019-20 season from the one we knew in October!

What a shock to find cricket and all sport cancelled. I guess we always think there will be challenges for sport from a changing society but I do not think what has happened was ever on anyone’s radar.

Where does all that has happened leave us, what do we need to do to get back to where we were?

While we can look back on what was another successful season for the Eastern Cricket Association across all of our various competitions, we were very lucky that our competitions were able to be completed.

We need to approach the task with optimism and not fear.

There is also a need to recognise that society and the authorities will impose changes on us and we will need to adapt our sport to the new environment we occupy.

A glance at most sports indicates that they are up for the challenge of adapting to stay relevant, almost all have gone through changes, as has cricket and I am confident we will emerge from the pandemic and be playing cricket, with a few tweaks, come October.

As always there is a host of people and groups who in no small way contribute to the successful operation of the ECA and they include:

Our Life Members & Patrons.

Our ECA Executive Members and Office Bearers, and in particular the outstanding contributions of Operations Manager Rod Patterson (in particular for collating this annual report), Assistant Operations Manager John Dinneen, Vice President Mike Slattery, Turf, Synthetic and Veteran Managers Greg McLeod, John Franklin and Eugene Fitzwilliam together with Finance Manager Tom Hickie and the other Exec members Michael Mirabella and Dan Bomford. The ECA Exec has been a cohesive and committed unit that has attended meetings and constructively debated and resolved many issues during the season, I thank all the members for their invaluable input.

Thanks to all the members of our subcommittees, the Turf Committee, the Synthetic Wicket Committee, the Veterans Committee and particularly Stuart Hamilton and the Junior Executive that run a competition nearly as big as the Seniors with much less resource.

A big thanks to Sharon Lynas and all involved in the Junior Girls competition for their great work in continuing to foster the female talent in the Eastern Suburbs.

Thanks to Paul Devine and all the coaches and managers of the Junior Rep carnival in Jan 2020 as well and James Binney the coach of our U21 team.

Our Umpires Association and all member umpires and particularly the contributions of Manager Dan Bomford, President Chris Main and Secretary John Wood. Thanks also to Gary Male for his work as Umpire appointments officer.

3 President’s Report

Thanks to our Local Government Authorities including the Cities of Boroondara, Whitehorse, Manningham, Monash, Stonnington, Knox , Yarra and Maroondah who in fact should be recognised as among our principal benefactors.

Our sponsors, including ball supplier and T20 naming rights sponsor Kookaburra, Minute Press, Bendigo Bank, Australian Sports Camps.

Congratulations to each of our Premiership winners, individual medal winners and and average winners. Special mention to Dunstan Premiers North Balwyn CC, MacGibbon Premiers St Pauls CC and LOC1 Premiers Vic Cavaliers CC on winning the top grades on their sections, and Edinburgh CC as Kookaburra T20 champions this season.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to Michael and Chris Mirabella for putting together the online presentation, including conducting interviews, especially the fantastic interview with Marnus, and the hours needed to come up with a very professional final product.

Imperatives for the coming season will by necessity revolve around ensuring there is a season, however among the things we will need to handle are: - Implementation of the points rule - Helping the Junior section administration with additional resources - Maintaining the financial health of the association and our Clubs - Engage with local councils on financial matters and ground access

The Cricket East Metro proposal that would see the ECA, BHRDCA and RDCA come together in a transitional body as a precursor to an eventual merger has proved very difficult to make any progress on.

Despite many hours of time committed by Mike Slattery, Neil Dalrymple, Rod Patterson and Greg McLeod, the talk has not yet borne any fruit. As Ringwood has effectively terminated its involvement, it is hard to see where it will go from here however the ECA remains open to any arrangement that will ultimately be of benefit to the ECA.

Rick Barker President

4 Executive Council Report

Season 21 started at the Annual meeting in August 2019 with all previous season’s clubs returning.

In the off season North Balwyn Combined CC merged with St Barnabas CC to form Balwyn Saints CC and would put teams in both Turf, Synthetic and LOC competitions. St James Malvern Valley CC would make a name change to Malvern Valley CC.

The Executive underwent minor change as Gerard Petrie stood down. He was replaced by Michael Mirabella. Also Mike Slattery and Richard Barker swapped roles with Richard taking on the President’s mantle

Once again the LOC competition expanded with the traditional synthetic competition contracting. We moved the Carr Shield to the LOC competition to compensate for these changes in response to club and player needs.

As usual the cricket season tossed up its share of issues with droughts, smoke/smog and then the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Executive responded quickly to the Covid-19 issue by forcing completion of all grand finals over the weekend of March 17 and 18, before any restrictions came into force. Many other associations were not as forward thinking and had to cancel grand final games. Thanks to the ECA Juniors who had to rejuggle games to other venues so everything could finish.

The Kookaburra Twenty/20 final was between Heathmont and Edinburgh played at Heathmont Reserve and the ECA appreciates the support of both Heathmont CC and Maroondah Council in hosting the grand final. The winner was Edinburgh.

Cricket Victoria’s Metropolitan Cricket Review continued to progress slowly. However following a restructure in April 2020 at Cricket Victoria this initiative looks like being shelved.

Our Sponsors continue to give their support to the association and on behalf of all members I thank Kookaburra Sports, GI Printing/ Minute Press, Fort Knox Self Storage, Bendigo Bank .

The initiative from last where turf grand final venues had the club finishing higher the opportunity to host was continued. In the synthetic and LOC grade a club’s primary ground could be utilised by a side if they did not utilise that ground during the season.

The Executive was advised late in the season that Steve Oluc would be relinquishing his role as Turf grade secretary. Thank you Steve for your contributions.

Also we have been advised that Dan Bomford would not be seeking re-election. From all the Executive and the Umpire fraternity, thank you for your charming ways.

I would like to thank all the hard working Office Bearers for their work to ensure ECA continues be one of the better run cricket associations in Victoria.

Rod Patterson Operations Manager

6 Treasurer’s Report

It gives me great pleasure to present the Financial Statements of the Eastern Cricket Association for the 2019-20.

The Association recorded a surplus of $11,581 for the year compared with a deficit of $5477 for the 2018-19 season.

Total income of $121,674 (2018/19: $121,914 was in line with last year while total expenditure of $110,093 (2018/9: $127,381 saw reductions in Ball Subsidy to Clubs ($15,515), Scorebook Printing ($4,318), Inter Association Costs ($10,115) with Helmet Subsidy, Club Workshops, Presentation Night Costs and Umpires Development Refunds being the major increase in comparative expense for the year.

Your Executive is conscious of the financial challenge member clubs may face in a post COVID-19 environment and has structured the Association’s financial position to provide support as and when required.

The cash position and Members Funds balance as at 31 May 2020 is appropriate given the current circumstances.

8 Independent Auditor’s Report

To the Members of Eastern Cricket Association Inc

To the Members of the Eastern Cricket Association

I have audited the 2020 Statement of Assets and Liabilities, included in the attached special purpose financial report, of the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA). However I have not audited the Income and Expenditure Statement for the financial year ended 31 May 2020, and other explanatory notes also included in the financial report.

Executive Council’s Responsibility for the Financial Report

The Executive Council of the ECA is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, and have determined that the preparation is appropriate to meet the needs of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic) 1991 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The Executive Council’s responsibilities also includes such internal controls as the Executive determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor Opinion I have conducted an Independent Audit of the Statement of Assets and Liabilities in order to express an opinion on this statement to the Members. Based on the evidence provided by the ECA Finance Manager, I have formed an opinion that the Statement of Assets and Liabilities fairly presents the value of assets and liabilities at 31 May 2020 in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic) 1991

My audit has not involved performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the Financial report, nor has it involved reviewing internal controls to assess whether they are appropriate and adequate to ensure proper presentation of the financial report.

Accordingly no opinion is expressed in relation to the adequacy of the ECA's internal controls or accounting procedures. Furthermore, no opinion is expressed in relation to the fairness or adequacy of the Statement of Income and expenditure for the year ended 31 May 2020

Restriction on Distribution

Noting my comments above, I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for reliance on the Statement of Assets and Liabilities within this financial report, or on the Statement of Assets and Liabilities to which it relates to any other person other than the ECA members, or for any other purpose for which the Statement was prepared. I further disclaim any assumption of responsibility for the Statement of Income and Expenditure.

Signed on 10 July 2020

Michael J. Rattenbury Chartered Accountant

9 Umpires’ Report

Thank you for this opportunity to contribute to the ECA Annual Report.

May I express my gratitude to those who have contributed to the learning and development of our umpires during Season 2019-2020.

This includes: • our ECA President Richard Barker, his Executive and the ECA Committee – and I am most grateful for that support; • Rod Patterson, Operations Manager, and Members of the ECA Committee for providing officiating opportunities, and for their continued positive attitude towards umpiring. In return, the umpiring body aspires to support the ECA by delivering a professional standard of performance and behaviour throughout the ECA’s competitions; • John Dinneen, Rod Patterson, Greg McLeod and Mike Slattery from the ECA Committee for their sage advice; • the ECUA President Chris Main, his Executive and the ECUA Committee for their support; • the ECUA Committee for facilitating the training opportunities at Association meetings; • Members and others who have assisted with the development of umpires through observations, study notes/questions/answers, arranging handouts and audio-visuals, asking pertinent questions, and for keeping us focused; • Members and others for their involvement at training, both at meetings and practical training sessions; and for managing our interactions with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia including Umpire Accreditation; • Members and others who conduct appraisals and provide feedback to aspiring colleagues; • Team Captains who conduct appraisals and provide feedback on our match officials; • individuals especially ECA Club members, players and delegates who act as umpires during the home and away season, and during the Finals series; and • Clubs that support training in many ways such as the Canterbury CC and Mont Albert CC for the use of their venues.

I am exceedingly grateful to Garry Male for his optimistic approach, all his time and effort in preparing umpire appointments, managing changes, dealing with feedback, and providing advice to our ECA panel of umpires and Club officials.

Challenges this year included: • finalising the list of ECA umpires; • the application of our ECA playing conditions in both seniors and juniors; • player misbehaviour regardless of whether ECA umpires were appointed to a match; • umpires failing to take appropriate or any action with player misbehaviour; • the umpire grading and appointment process. Umpire dissatisfaction with rankings is a difficult chestnut to crack given the majority of feedback is subjective; • umpires advising of their availability/unavailability, and the associated appointment changes required; and • a disrupted season due to weather including bushfire smoke and, towards season end, COVID-19.

Communication with individual clubs, captains and umpires has continued this season. The main objective of communication is to receive and provide constructive feedback that, in turn, hopefully improves umpire performances and relationships between umpires and Club stakeholders.

What have we considered/begun? Prior to the season, Peter Knox of Mont Albert CC proposed that the ECA establish a Keith Carr Fellowship to be used for umpire development. Details of the Fellowship were intended to be considered/explored.

Although not yet formally launched, this Umpire Training Academy envisages a range of training and development opportunities.

One possibility is to fund an ECA umpire (and partner) to travel to the UK for a reasonable part of the UK season, say 12 weeks, to improve his/her umpiring. Challenges with that include: • developing a relationship with a UK competition where umpires are already well accredited; • only 1 umpire could be involved (who may leave the ECA upon his/her return to Australia); • the umpire would need to supplement the Fellowship and fund his/her own accommodation, transport, living expenses etc; • the umpire (and possibly partner) would be required to gain leave from work/studies for 12 weeks; • currently, only umpires at First Class level participate in these development programs, for much shorter periods, and this may not be appropriate for ECA umpires.

10 Umpires’ Report

The ECUA Executive supports the establishment of a Fellowship to improve ECA umpires, and feel that it would be better to use funds allocated to the Fellowship to improve a greater number of umpires so that, in turn a greater number of ECA stakeholders will benefit.

An alternative possibility could involve 6 - 10 umpires • in programs within Australia for shorter periods; • to work with Cricket Victoria’s Premier umpires; • to officiate during Country Week, the VMCU junior carnival and the Youth Premier League (YPL); • to attend CA/CV umpiring courses; • to be mentored by former, experienced senior ECA umpires on match days.

We thank Peter Knox for the Keith Carr Fellowship proposal, and look forward to further updates.

What have we achieved? We have encouraged a range of umpires to officiate in various carnivals including the VMCU junior carnival and the Cricket Victoria (CV) Youth Premier League (YPL). David Wright and Brian King officiated in the 19/20 YPL with members of the CV panel of umpires and, in so doing, broadened their experience of other competitions, playing standards (i.e. at a higher quality level) , playing conditions (i.e. local rules), and umpiring colleagues. This type of cross-pollination, especially with more experienced umpiring colleagues from CV assists the development of our ECA umpires.

We have encouraged our umpires to attend the CV Winter Classes on The Laws of Cricket and, again this year, offered our umpires a copy of the CV Winter Class handouts - another useful reference and resource, at no cost.

We conducted a training and development session with Stuart Hamilton and Hugh Wilkinson from the ECA Junior Committee, to update relevant umpires on junior playing conditions. Similarly, we conducted a session with John Dinneen who led a discussion on good/poor behaviour, managing with poor behaviour and the caution/reporting process. Both sessions were appreciated.

We called on Greg McLeod on multiple occasions to update the panel of umpires on the ECA playing conditions. I greatly appreciate Greg’s expertise and understanding of the PCs.

In the short term, we should: • encourage more umpires to make themselves available for carnivals like the VMCU, YPL, Country Week - depending on which competitions are held in 20/21; • offer to reimburse those umpires who attend the CV Winter Classes. The cost to the ECA would be less than $100 per umpire, payable as a reimbursement after the umpire attends all the classes.

We look forward to seeing the fruit of these considerations and achievements in the form of improved umpire performance.

New umpire performances It appeared that the season would begin with six new umpires joining. We conducted an evening introductory session for new umpires that was attended by our ECA President Richard Barker. We also conducted a Sunday morning practical session. Both sessions were conducted at Canterbury CC, and we thank them for the use of their venue. Thanks to Chris Main, Garry Shipp, Mike Slattery, Geoff Wheeler and John Wood who participated from ECUA. New umpire performances continue to be very satisfactory and aspiring young umpires (male and female) continue to perform well. I sincerely hope that these trends continue.

Training and Development, and aspiration to higher levels In addition to the regular monthly training and development meetings

All umpires were invited, and several attended Cricket Victoria’s Winter Classes during May/June 2019 including Pawan Srinivasan and Barry Simpson. We said farewell to Bharath Rao and Nick Davies at the beginning of Season 2019-2020 and wish them well as they explore new roles on the Premier Cricket panel of umpires with colleagues Swapnil Awekar, Dario Licheni and Tim Norton. All umpires were invited, and several attended Cricket Victoria’s regional seminar series. Conducted by Jason Leonard-Scott, Cricket Victoria Umpire Manager, the seminars (Ringwood, Monday 9/9/19, six ECA umpires attended; and Mulgrave, Wednesday 11/9/19, ten ECA umpires attended) focussed on umpire accreditation / re-accreditation; changes to Laws including those relating to run out of the non-striker. Also commentary on the use of helmets, Working With Children Checks, Childsafe Policy.

11 Umpires’ Report

Our umpires were invited to volunteer on Sunday 9/2/20 in support of the Bushfires Charity Super 6 competition organised by DUCC. Thanks to Adrian Lynch, Graham Morna and Barry Simpson for directly supporting this cause.

Attendances at meetings progressively declined (due in part to some students not returning to tertiary study in Melbourne), although involvement at meetings increased. Further feedback suggests more changes and a range of other techniques can further improve the experience for our ECA panel of umpires. We attempted to re- introduce the audio-visual Stephen Fry animated series on The Laws.

We have continued to encourage members of our ECA panel of umpires to use a variety of resources to enhance their private study. Useful resources include: • The Laws of Cricket • the MCC’s Changes to the Laws document • local playing conditions • adjuncts to umpiring techniques including: o handouts from Cricket Victoria’s Winter Classes provided by Cricket Victoria o Tom Smith’s Cricket Umpiring & Scoring

As there was no Premier Cricket Final, we were unable to fulfil our anticipated training session on the hill at Cricket Victoria’s

Standard of Umpiring. The overall standard of umpiring has again been good and is encouraging, often with high marks being allocated by our Team Captains.

The feedback provided by our Team Captains is invaluable as it constitutes the majority of opinion, critique and appraisal our umpires receive. Captains’ opinions go a long way to the ranking that determines finals' appointments. In thanking them, I encourage our Team Captains to continue to provide objective and meaningful advice that will assist our umpires to develop further. A series of acceptable marks for a match without commenting further gives little feedback.

Congratulations Congratulations to all ECUA and ECA members and participants for another year of achievement and improvement.

Congratulations to all officials and teams for participating/managing/competing, and reaching finals and for achieving Grand Final berths/premierships in the wide variety of competitions and carnivals (such as the Cricket Victoria Youth Premier League (YPL) matches, VMCU Junior Carnival etc) in which we officiate at senior, junior, veterans and women’s levels.

Congratulations especially to: • Steve Oluc and Mark Price for officiating in the Dunstan Shield grand final; and • Adam Collinson and John Westwood for officiating in the MacGibbon Shield grand final.

Congratulations to Iain Graham, recipient of the Community Match Official of the Year at Cricket Victoria’s 2019/20 ‘A Sport for All Awards’. Cricket Victoria ‘Iain has been a great supporter of the Eastern Cricket Association junior cricket program. Iain has always made himself available to umpire junior games at short notice and doesn’t mind where he travels to.’ Iain is an excellent umpire and student of the Laws. A richly deserved award for work well above the norm in umpiring all levels of games and being the appointments officer for our ECA Juniors for the last two seasons - a long-time colleague, former President, Treasurer and Life Member of the ECUA. We also thank the ECA Junior Committee for Iain’s nomination.

We must strive for higher standards of performance - the ECA and the Community expects nothing less. To this end, an invitation was extended to our ECA panel of umpires to voluntarily attend a training and development session at the Premier Cricket Grand Final. The objective was to observe the umpires, analyse and discuss their communication, positioning, routines, player management and processes as a training exercise. Those who attended found the exercise useful.

Thank you all for your support. Your contributions go a long way to make officiating in our Association enjoyable and successful.

20 Veterans Report

Our 5th season of the ECA Veterans Competition, 25 clubs entered a total of 38 teams of Over 40’s. We welcomed new club to the fold in Blackburn North United who entered 2 teams and performed very well being allocated to Division 2. Unfortunately, Box Hill CC withdrew their side in Div-1 after round 1 and Mazenod withdrew a team just before Christmas. As a result, this created “Byes” in 2 grades.

Our season launch held late September and was convened at the Notting Hill Brandon Park CC new club rooms. On the night, we provided clubs with relevant information, club packs, rule updates and alike.

As a follow up through the ECA / Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia ( PCFA ) Initiative, we still push for players to hear that very important message to make them aware and to instigate regular checks with their doctor.

We believe this initiative is an excellent forum to connect with our wider community. As part of this initiative, clubs are provided free complete sets of blue stumps & bails to use in all games - thanks to Kookaburra Sports for supplying these.

In recognition of this initiative, the ECA / PCFA Blue Stumps Cup was contested between Division-2 Clubs Salesian OC & Boroondara at Salesian College with Salesian OC victorious - congratulations.

Unfortunately, our major naming sponsor, Fletchers Real Estate (Canterbury) did not continue their valued sponsorship which we have enjoyed for the past 4 seasons. I’d like to personally thank Director Tim Heavyside for his involvement in providing valuable funds for our competition.

Besides this, we were still able to give clubs excellent savings in the following areas:

(a) No team entry fee in the 1st season (b) 20% reduction in ball costs (c) Free scorebooks (d) Reduced umpire fees by $20 (e) No cost to clubs for 1 umpire in Grand Finals (f) No cost to clubs for balls provided in finals series

I wish to thank and congratulate all clubs for their input and enthusiasm in making our season a great success.

To the 5 Division premiers, well done on your season’s efforts. I must mention the excellent performance of the STC South Camberwell C.C. for winning the Division-1 Shield after being promoted from 3rd division. Also, on behalf of captains, players and our committee, thanks to those umpires for participating during the season and in our finals series.

The Division winners were as follows: Division-1 ECA / PCFA Shield STC South Camberwell C.C. Division-2 R.W. Webster Shield Salesian Old Collegians C.C. Division-3 M.G.H. Fielden Shield Surrey Hills C.C. Division-4 J. Mollison Shield Bulleen C.C. Division-5 J. Edgar Shield Mazenod Old Collegians C.C.

The “Michael Bingley Medal” for Best Player in the Division-1 grand final was Cameron Judd of the STC South Camberwell C.C. - congratulations.

To all members of the Vets Committee, I thank you all for a job well done. Your desire to commit and improve the competition in our 5th season was terrific.

22 Junior Chair’s Report

The ECA Junior Executive plays a very important role in the future of cricket in the region. We aim to provide an inclusive competition that will instill a passion for cricket in the kids that play and see them continue playing in the future in the Senior competition.

We work to provide the best competition that we can, but it is also up to the clubs and club volunteers to make our aim a reality.

The Junior Executive continues to look at how the competition can be improved and in the past few years has been the main instigator for rule changes.

Clubs are also requested to propose rule changes each season. These changes improve the competition and make it a fairer, more enjoyable experience for all involved. Thank you to the ECA Junior Executive team for the work they put in to make the season a success.

In the 2109/20 season we had 35 clubs enter 245 teams in the ECA Junior competition. This ranged for U10 through to U18 competitions.

Premierships were shared around this year with only 4 clubs (Balwyn, Burwood, Canterbury and STC South Camberwell) winning 2 premierships.

One of our U16B competitions this year had a number of teams from the NMCA participating. To make this easier for these teams we played all of their games in the Northern region of the ECA. Decisions like this help clubs to field teams now and in the future.

Weather was not kind to us this year and we had three rounds which could not be completed.

The Junior Executive is under increasing pressure to make early calls on games playing when weather is considered to be unfavourable. We have rules in place which cover these occurrences but we are very aware of the demands on families, particularly on a Friday evening when games start at 5.15pm.

We do cover a large geographic area and conditions can vary from suburb to suburb. Nonetheless, our aim is to provide a safe game of cricket for all of our Junior players.

Fixturing has always been a challenge and this year was no exception. In the week leading up to the publication of the fixture we had more than 40 changes to team entries. Some changes are easy whereas others instigate a complete redraw of the competition for that day. Without the assistance of Rodney Patterson the job of fixturing would have been even more challenging. I thank him for the work he put in to get the junior competition started on time.

Junior representative cricket was another feature of January 2020 for many of our talented cricketers.

We entered boys teams in the U12, U14 and U16 age groups and girls teams in the U14 and U16 age groups.

All teams had a challenging tournament with heat, bushfires and smoke interrupting games. Our U12 Josh Browne plate teams and U14 Allen Shield teams had strong carnivals but both teams lost in the semi finals.

Our U16 girls team had a great result drawing in the grand final, sharing the premiership with BHRDCA.

Thank you to Paul Devine, team coaches and team managers who make this possible. Paul puts in a lot of time to make this a memorable experience for all involved.

23 Junior Chair’s Report

Weather was the challenge through the season but our Grand finals were nearly beaten by COVID-19.

Many phone calls and emails took place the week leading into the grand finals.

I must thank clubs for their understanding in a very challenging week.

The decision was made to play and to add to the confusion the ECA Seniors moved their grand finals to the same day. Last minute, and I do mean last minute, ground changes on the morning of the grand finals were necessary and all games were completed. Thank you for everyone's patience and understanding.

Without clubs entering teams, without team coaches, without team managers and without players we would not have anyone playing in our competition.

Thank you to everyone for supporting our efforts to provide the best junior competition in the state.

I hope that everyone stays safe and well and I look forward to the start of season 2020/21 in late October.

24 Junior Trophy Winner

DAVE DICKIE MEMORIAL TROPHY

Ollie Will – Canterbury • Ollie commenced his journey in junior cricket at the age of 9 in 2014. Instead of playing in Under 10 he played in Under 12. From the start he showed an eagerness to be involved in all aspects of the game - batting, bowling and wicketkeeping. An aggressive batsman in the mould of Glen Maxwell, sometimes he succeeded and sometimes he disappointed, but rest assured there was never a dull moment. He loves his wicketkeeping however the spin bowing has taken a back seat of late but he still enjoys rolling his arm over at training.

• In January 2017 he played in his first ECA representative side (U12 Mitchell Shield) where he played with several boys who are his closest friends today.

• From there he played in ECA sides in 2018 and Inner East Emus sides in 2019 (U14 - Jan 19) and (U16 as a bottom age - Dec 19).

• This culminated in his selection in the Victorian U15 Metro Team in 2020 as a Batsman / Wicketkeeper, where he played in the National Carnival in Ballarat in February 2020.

• Ollie also commenced playing Senior Cricket in 2018/19 Season and was Canterbury CC’s youngest ever debutant Dunstan Shield player at the age of 13, where he more than held his own behind the stumps and with the bat.

• Ollie loves his cricket and most of all enjoys meeting new people. In addition to his cricket Ollie has played in 4 State Hockey Teams, 2 x U13 and 2 x U15, winning the National Championships once and captaining the State Team twice. •

27 Inner East Girls Cricket

The 2019/20 season for the “all girls” iEGC competition was a different season than previous years with unusual weather, fires and then the non finish due to corona virus. It just wasn’t quite right!

We had a brilliant start with having two Stage 3 Anna Lanning Teams moving on to form two new Community Women’s teams in the Inner East in Burwood Cricket Club and Heatherdale CC, a great development for the hard work and success of our iEGC competition.

We can now see a complete pathway for the girls in our region to continue to play senior cricket either at Premier Level and now Community level. Both teams had success with Burwood CC going on to win the grand final in the East division WCCC, in their first season.

Another exciting development was the introduction of 4 new clubs into iEGC, with teams from Mitcham CC, Camberwell Magpies, Wyclif CC and Kerrimuir CC being welcome additions to our competition. The girls from these teams have loved their cricket so far and we have heard many positive stories from their matches this season. We definitely hope to see many more new clubs join next season.

Some changes from last year were that the Stage 3 Anna Lanning Shield played as one full season which was received well by all the stage 3 teams this season.

The Stage 1 and 2 divisions remained split seasons with Spring and Summer seasons, this worked well for most clubs and will continue on for next year.

We had some clubs move to play Sundays with the RDCA, as their players no longer available for Wednesday nights and we will again look to have both Wednesday and Sunday competitions next season and hopefully keep growing all girls cricket in the Inner east region for BHRDCA and ECA clubs, but also be mindful to leave Fridays free for girls to play in boys comps and Sunday afternoons remains free for Women’s Cricket.

This season’s format remained T20 games, that are played within 2 hours, which is important for parents as this is held after school in the evenings, so they appreciate a short, sharp format that promotes everyone getting a go, this remains a priority for Inner East Girls Cricket.

The opportunity to have home games at club venues remains popular with only the finals played at Hislop Park to give it a carnival atmosphere.

In December we successfully held our first Stage 1 finals game between Heathmont CC and Holy Trinity CC at Box Hill City Oval before a Premier Game and led us to schedule another Stage 1 final for the Summer Season.

Unfortunately the Summer finals were scheduled for Wed 18th March and we had to cancel due to Covid-19 restrictions. This was a very difficult decision and we were so unlucky that we had scheduled the finals for that week, but we are satisfied this was the correct decision in hindsight.

Congratulations to the winning sides for the Spring Season and to the shared winners for the teams scheduled to play in the Grand final in the Summer Season.

We have definitely seen improvement of the standard with each ongoing season and feel our grading and fixturing is improving each season. We are all so proud of what these girls are achieving, really happy with the progression of girls cricket into women’s cricket and really looking forward to the advances we will make with girls cricket next season:

The emphasis of our competition is on participation, learning the game of cricket, developing the girl’s skills but most importantly having fun, whilst also providing a pathway to representative cricket.

The success of our competition is mirrored in the success our representative teams have had in the Inner East with nearly all of these girls having played in iEGC.

Congratulations to the U17 Emus side that made it to the Grand final, players included I .White, H.Pearce, J.Fleming, A.O’Farrell, R.Roberts, R.Cullinan, B.Vickers, S.Burke, A.Elliott, A.Obrien, E.Ryan, K.Stavretis and L Charalambous. U14 Emus side including players A.Gladman, R.Talekar, E.Stilve, N.Plant, S.Plant, S.DeRoos, T.Gouldson, J.Gouldson, V.Munukutla, A.Batt, C.Davis, A.Booth and J.Volt. iECG girls also had great success in the VMCU carnival this January with U12 BJRDCA Claudia Fatone team making semi-finals, U14 Julie Savage BHRDCA team and U16 Mel Jones ECA team winning the Grand finals.

I would like to sincerely thank our fantastic and hard working iEGC Committee that includes Alex Berry, Simon De Roos, Ann Brennan and Ross Chambers. They are all volunteers and it is their combined effort that keeps this competition running so professionally and efficiently.

I hope we can convince them to stay on for another season and would welcome anyone who would like to join our wonderful Committee moving forward.

Thanks to Clinton Kennon, Steve Box and Sam Norman from Cricket Victoria who have supported our region and most specifically for all their work in supporting girl’s cricket in our region.

Thank you to Peter Rosenthal, Tom Anderson, Richard Barker and Stuart Hamilton and their Committees for their continued support, without which, we could not have this competition or have it run as smoothly as we do.

Lastly to all the clubs, coaches, team managers and most importantly the players. Without their enthusiasm and hard work through the season we would not be able to have such a wonderful competition. With your support we continue to grow and make the iEGC the envy of other regions.

Thanks from me for another stellar season and looking forward to 2020/21.
