2015 Bacteria Data - Lakes, Ponds and Reservoirs Enterococci Data 2015 Bacteria Data - Lakes, Ponds and Reservoirs Enterococci Data Two groups of bacteria are monitored to indicate the presense of human sewage and associated pathogens, or disease causing organisms - fecal coliforms and enterococci. The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIHealth) uses a single-value enterococci standard for licensed swimming beaches. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) uses a geometric mean approach for contact recreation standards on all other waters (fresh and salt). In addition, as required by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program for shellfish waters and their tributaries and as an indicator of overall water quality, RIDEM assesses fecal coliform levels. (Fecal coliform data is available for marine waters and shellfish area tributaries in the "Tidal Rivers Bacteria" file). While URIWW's Analytical Laboratories are State certified, Watershed Watch data is intended for screening purposes only. However our data are very valuable for targeting areas of concerns and for tracking potential sources of bacterial contamination. Samples from various sites may have been collected over a period of days for each collection period, so may reflect dry versus wet weather or rain event values. Please contact Watershed Watch for specific sample dates. Any result above the state standard is considered unsafe, and swimmers should refrain from swimming until results return to acceptable levels, or at least for several days after heavy rain. This dam is a combination of a manmade dam and natural waterfall. To the right there is a short trail that leads to a small area that overlooks the gorge. 7. Harrisville Falls, Burrillville. The gorgeous dam is located in the heart of Harrisville. 8. Hunt’s Mills Falls, East Providence. This dam in the shape of a half moon creates a unique waterfall split in the middle by a huge rock.

Beaches are also under a great deal of stress from a variety of recreational uses, including vehicles, dog-walking, and other forms of disturbance. Increased populations of subsidized predators, such as skunks and raccoons, also plague birds that attempt to nest in such habitats. Piping Plovers and Least Terns nest exclusively in coastal beach habitats. In Rhode Island, this species is an uncommon breeding species and also an uncommon passage migrant. Spotted Sandpipers nest in dune vegetation along the coast and also on lake shores, where they hide their nest on the ground in thick dry vegetation. Spotted Sandpipers prefer open country and were formerly common in sheep pastures or other agricultural lands near water. Because of the maturation of forests, it is likely that the most Spotted Sandpiper nesting now occurs only along the coast. However, nesting sites are scattered throughout the state and are difficult to monitor. Nevertheless, sites that are surveyed often (e.g., Napatree Point) suggest a long-term decline.

Water Quality Regulations Effective February 26, 2020 The attached WQS document is in effect for Clean Water Act (CWA) purposes with the exceptions below that are still subject to EPA review per EPA’s July 29, 2008 action: • Revisions to Section 1.21, E(1)(a) and (c)i, ii, iii, and iv concerning the potential for future reclassification of specified waters from Class SA to Class SA{b}. • Reclassification of six waters (waterbody ID numbers RI0007025E-06A, RI0007025E-06C, RI0007027E-05, RI0007032E-01E, RI0010043E-06I, and RI0010031E-02A) from Class SA to Class SB at Section 1.25 Water Quality Classifications. • Revisions to the freshwater and saltwater chronic mercury criteria for the protection of aquatic life. • Freshwater acute and chronic xylene criteria for the protection of aquatic life at Section J, Table of Acute and Chronic Aquatic Life Criteria and Minimum Database Guidelines for Freshwater and Saltwater and Human Health Criteria. 250-RICR-150-05-1 TITLE 250 – DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT CHAPTER 150 – WATER RESOURCES SUBCHAPTER 05 – WATER QUALITY PART 1 – Water Quality Regulations 1.1 Purpose It is the purpose of these regulations to establish water quality standards for the State's surface waters.
