4 5 But if the induction is where it finishes, here's where it starts for collectors, the parking lot at Graziano's. The collector show on Saturday rarely has more than a couple of guys set up with quality old stuff who weren't already in the parking lot on Thursday PM. Folks who shop the parking lot are not looking for T-Shirts, caps, 8x10's, or old Sports Illustrateds. So more big purchases are made here. It is largely what keeps collectors coming back. Even if you are not staying at Graziano's, and most folks can't since most rooms are rented by priority through a seniority set up there, the parking lot is a short walk from the HOF itself so you can do everything Thursday and Friday during the day in a relatively compact area.

The most impressive guy all weekend is the guy who should have been, Tommy Hearns. You see it doesn't always work out that way. When Hagler went in and you I caught Antonio Tarver's ringside lecture and it went very well. couldn't get near him and when you heard him speak Tarver has a promising career at ringside as an analyst. It would his ego was off-putting. Not Hearns. At every event he be a shame to see him clinging to a career that scrambles his brain was living in the moment and I have to say, he is much and undoes what he does, now, best. I told him that in the Q&A and more articulate than when he was fighting. If you ask me, got a round of applause for the concern. Folks must have seen the retirement agrees with Tommy. I hope he comes back. Kayode fight too!

This Friday night's activity was a night of the . , at right, spoke well as did Lamon Brewster but it was sickening to watch folks fawn over Chuck Wepner who, with his partner in crime, John Olson, did more to pollute the sports (and especially boxing) autograph market than anyone in the US. Hey, they were convicted. Olson did the forgeries and Wepner did the lying about when and where they were Too-Sharp was an easy autograph and he mentioned supposedly signed. If they had dummied up $50 several times his being the first African-American bills instead of thousands of Ali signatures that sold champion in his . Good for him. I'd like for $50 each, they would still be in jail. "Rocky," to see him back as well, his ringside lectures may be my butt, Wepner is a morally bankrupt nobody who excellent. caught a break.

8 9 The things shown here give you a taste of the collectibles show. Counterclockwise from above, some framed Ali signatures. Then I wish what Lou's holding was shown in color (maybe on the website later). That National colorized pic of Walker was one of my buys. But there are, these days, lots and lots of magazines and flea market stuff mixed Above, the cocktail party is always the best event for signatures. The in with the quality stuff at the show. Frankly that probably serves most banquet (below) not so much but some. The banquet is held in a very well since the average attendee doesn't seem come with a pocket full of large room at the Onecenter in Syracuse. The food is passable. money. Even in vintage material there are lots of <$50 items. Amongst the new pricey material those belts interested me simply because you can get belts made up to say what you want these days and we should all know that. Check out the "UPC" belt in the middle. The Tyson painting is awesome as is the artist, Kenneth Miller's, other works. See sportsartid.com.

At right, top to bottom: Gasper Ortega signs at the cocktail party; Hearns almost acted as host at the banquet, getting his picture made with everyone on the dais though here, all McGirt was interested in was the chow. McGirt loves the HOF weekend but a little of Buddy goes a long way. His obnoxious level goes up after about 3 minutes; , came to the weekend without the entourage that accompanied him when he showed up as heavyweight champ several years back. Moorer appears more settled and humble now and a joy to listen to.

Each of the events has its pluses and minuses and no event can be scripted with this many fighters on hand. You just never know exactly who will say what or who will show up full of himself or a bottle of scotch. But almost all of these go remarkably well and have since the very first year. For all the criticism Ed Brophy and his crew have gotten through the years, it would be hard to characterize what they do as anything but excellent - considering.
