On the cover – “Sundown” by Terry Redlin The farmer has chosen a spectacular location high on a jagged point of land. It not only offers a grand panorama of the surrounding country, but a vantage point from which to watch the migrating waterfowl. At sundown he is rewarded by a close-up of giant Canadas as they pass a few feet overhead.

A bove print: H is First G ood-B ye “An American Portrait”

This body of work is Terry Redlin’s tribute to America. It is his way of honoring Veterans, Servicemen and Servicewomen, and the families who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

In August 2004, Terry Redlin made a special guest appearance at the Redlin Art Center in Watertown, South Dakota to unveil his new series of seven paintings! It was the first time the series was viewed by the public. “An American Portrait” is a collection of paintings that had been in the works since 1995. Inspired by Terry Redlin’s personal experiences, the paintings capture the emotion of seven heartfelt firsts. Together, these individual paintings create “An American Portrait.” With incredible attention to the finest detail, each painting in the series stands alone, yet is built upon the preceding images . . . first friend, first day of school, first date, first graduation, first homecoming, first good-bye, and ultimately, the last good-bye. This body of work is Terry Redlin’s tribute to America. It is his way of honoring Veterans, Servicemen and Servicewomen, and the families who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. “An American Portrait” is on permanent display on the second floor of the Redlin Art Center. It has been added to an area in the Gallery Redlin referred to as the “America Room.” In addition to the new series of seven, the “America Room” showcases Redlin’s “America the Beautiful” series of eight, his painting, “Flying Free,” and his pair of paintings, “Good Morning, America!” and “Good Evening, America!” While visiting the Redlin Art Center, visitors are invited to enjoy complimentary video presentations about the making of both the “America the Beautiful” series and “An American Portrait.”

In 2017, a sculpture was placed at Lake Area Technical Artwalk! Institute. The art is changed yearly and most sculptures are for sale. Watertown Artwalk will be placing 14 new sculptures this spring around the downtown streets and the two offsite locations. This year, we are excited to feature a sculpture, I Lift My Eyes to the Hills, from local artist Doris Symens Armstrong. Other sculptures for the 2020-21 season include: Reeds by Bobbie Carlyle, Paper Boy, by Lee Leunig & Sherri Treeby; Food Chain by Jerry Nelson and Ralph Moose by Martha Pettigrew. Through the support of the Watertown Area Community Foundation, City of Watertown, Joy Nelson, Gray Construction, Sioux Falls SculptureWalk, SD Arts Council, WACF Giving Back 365, sculpture sponsors and Friends of Artwalk, the effort continues to offer a unique art experience for our community and visitors. “Even more than the impact of the art itself, we are starting to see the community as a whole embrace the project more,” said Artwalk President Joy Nelson. In 2019, the City of Watertown recognized the importance of Artwalk by including us in its budget to help in financing the project, she said. LATI students helped with the placement of the sculptures also in 2019. This partnership, which promotes volunteering as well as arts and cultures, has just begun.
