Received 9 October, 2014; Accepted 19 December, 2014 The government of Ethiopia gives great attention to livestock development for the country’s economy development. Having quality of animal feed is one of the pertinent components of livestock development. To improve the quality and quantity of animal feed in certain locality, farmers should be able to access and use appropriate knowledge for the particular problem at the right time and place. This research was conducted to assess agricultural knowledge management system in relation to improving the quality of animal feed in Bure district. To do so, the data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Multi stage sampling technique was used to select representative respondents. SPSS software (version 15) was also used to analysis the data. As survey result shows, crop residue (92.2%), attela (91.1%), natural pasture (65.6%), hay (62.2%) and birnt (30%) were the major feed sources for dairy producers in Bure district. To improve the quality of feed for their dairy cows, dairy producers had used supplementing non-conventional feeds (like attela and birnt) after grazing (92.1%), green hay making (65.2%), supplement concentrate after grazing (41.6%) and developing improved forage (20.2%) as the major mechanism. Agricultural officers (60.2%) and farmers’ own experiences (52.3%) were the major sources of knowledge for dairy producers in order to improve the quality of cattle feed. Informal discussion (56.8%), experience sharing sessions (36.4%) and on-walk observation (26.1%) were also the major means to access such knowledge. On the other hand, dairy producers had transferred this knowledge into their neighbors (95.1%), friends (91.4%) and relative (63.0%). This study clearly shows that in the study area the mechanisms that were used for improving the quality of cattle feed, did not properly improved the quality of the feed as the dairy cow need. Therefore, efforts should be done to introduce improved and more productive fodder types. Improved mechanisms (like urea treatment, urea molasses block, micro effective) should also be introduced to improve the palatability of available crop residue. In addition, to enhance the adoption rate of all these technologies, all concerned bodies should understand the communities’ knowledge system and approach them through their common knowledge sources and strengthen their means of knowledge accessing and sharing strategies. INTRODUCTION The Government of Ethiopia gives high priority to poor growth and efforts to enhance agricultural agriculture and rural development as an engine of pro- productivity, increase the commercialization of smallholder 2 J. Field studies and collection of data were carried out through semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussions, key informants and secondary data collection from different sources. A total of 120 households (60 from each district) were randomly selected for semi structured questionnaire interview. SAS and SPSS software were used to analyze the data. The study result revealed that overall cattle herd size was 9.67±3.34 heads per household and was not significantly different (p<0.05) between districts. The main purposes of keeping Horro cattle in both locations were draught power, milk production, income, manure and threshing of crop. The age at first service (AFS) of male Horro cattle was 3.47±0.39 years. The age at first mating (AFM) and age at first calving (AFC) of female cattle were 3.73±0.51 and 4.98±0.68 years respectively. The calving interval (CI) of Horro cow was estimated to be 1.88±0.49 years and showed no significant difference between locations.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence, to determine antimicrobial susceptibility and to assess risk factors associated with Salmonella shedding in dogs in selected towns of West Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. Using a cross-sectional design, a total of 438 rectal swab samples were collected from randomly selected dogs for isolation and identification of Salmonella using standard procedures. A ques- tionnaire survey was also administered. The results showed that 48 (11.0%, 95%, [CI]: 8.2% - 14.3 %) dogs were positive for Salmonella.The occurrenceof Salmonella was 10.9% (26/238), 11.6% (15/129) and 9.9% (7/71) in Ambo, Bako and Gojo towns respectively.

The dominant coat color in both female (45%) and male (75%) was red followed by brown (20%, and 12%) in female and male respectively and followed by black (9.5%) in female and male (5%). The overall Mean heart girth, flank girth, height at withers and horn length were 133.08±6.23,157.2±07.0,107.9±6.93 and 23.05±6.65cm respectively, and significantly different for both sex and district (p < 0.05).

Field survey was conducted during the 2014/2015 cropping season and 252 geo-referenced composite samples were collected from top soil (20cm) depth and data was analyzed during 2015. The laser diffraction particle size analyzer shows that clay was found to be the dominant texture of the study area. The soil pH value (pH- H2O) ranged from 4.5 to 6.4, (acidic) and -1 exchangeable acidity ranged 0.04 - 2.8 cmolckg . The mean of total nitrogen and percent organic carbon were 0.25% and 2.97% respectively. The relative abundance of micronutrients in the soil was dominated by manganese (Mn) followed by copper. Copper (Cu) level was optimum across the surveyed area. Boron deficiency accounted for about 93.66% of the surveyed areas. Zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) deficiencies also accounted for18.74% and 7.93% of study area, respectively.
