Summer Blues in Basel July 1 On this Friday evening, Kleinbasel will be the location for the 8. Glai- basler Bluesfescht (8th Kleinbasel Blues Festival). There will be 16 bands playing on a total of 7 stages between Claraplatz and Theodors kirchplatz. All concerts on the evening are free and run from 18:00 to about midnight. Just stroll over and enjoy the music and the great atmosphere; there will be numerous food and drink stands and bars set up throughout the concert areas. The final of the Swiss Blues Chal- lenge will also take place on this evening in the courtyard of the Volks haus Basel from 19:45–22:10. The four finalists that were selected by the organization “Swiss Blues” will each be playing for 25 minutes and competing for the public’s and the jury’s vote. Don’t miss an opportunity to hear these young talents and cheer them on. The competition will be topped with a performance of the winners of last year’s Swiss Blues Challenge, Johnny Fontane & The Rivals. Zirkus Chnopf—du da da ich July 6–10 Set up at the Dreispitz, Station Circus features various circus acts throughout the year. On these July days, Circus Chnopf, a small Euro- pean circus that breaks down the borders between circus, theater, musical, slapstick, and more, will be bringing their piece of Nouveau Cirque to the tent. This intergenerational circus, in which young artists are working alongside professionals, will be staging a fast-paced show full of fantasy and comic absurdity. The show starts at 18:00 on Wednesday and Sunday and at 19:30 on Friday and Saturday; there is no entrance fee, but a collection hat will be passed around at the end of the show. www.stationcircus.ch

Basel Tattoo—Shows July 21–30 The Basel Tattoo, the world’s second-largest and one of the most spectacular open-air tattoos, will be celebrating its 11th anniversary this year with a very special show. For nine days, the area around Kaserne will be transformed into a stage for drum corps from all corners of the world, including bands from royal houses, that put on spectacular shows with drumming, original choreography, lights, costumes, and colors. Audiences will be haunted by the Scottish-Highland sounds of the Massed Pipes & Drums, moved by world-famous catchy tunes, rocked by classics of pop and rock history, and impressed by military- style music performed while the musicians march in complicated pat- terns. This year’s edition of the Basel Tattoo again promises to be a spectacular event with a total of 21 bands from England, Finland, France, Malta, South Africa, the United States, Canada, and Switzer- land as well as places as far away as Russia and Japan! There are a total of 13 shows at Kaserne during this year’s festival; 10 shows at 21:30, and 3 shows at 17:30. The early shows on Saturday, July 23 and 30, are free for kids under age 10 and half price for kids ages 10–16; adult tickets are CHF 49–140. The early show on Sunday, July 24, is a family show with shorter acts, Swiss music star Luca Hänni, additional child-friendly entertainment (eg, the Europa Park mascot, Ed Euro- mouse), and family-friendly prices from CHF 19–49. Tickets for the shows at 21:30 are CHF 69–119 (half price for children up to age 9) and can be purchased through their online ticket shop, via Ticketcorner, or at the Basel Tattoo Shop at Schneidergasse 27 in Basel. The program is a collaboration between the renowned Basel Club Nordstern and the Young Art Club of the Fondation Beyeler. On July 23, Martin Buttrich will be performing from 17:00–21:00. The sun.set music set is free, and entrance to the museum on this evening is free for members of the Young Art Club and reduced for non-members. These official fireworks will be launched from barges on the Rhein, near Mittlere Brücke. Therefore, areas near or on the bridge make for great viewing, but are also very crowded. BBQ Season is Here! Summertime for many is synonymous with BBQ time. Simply the smell of food cooking over an open flame leaves anyone in its vicinity craving it. It not only smells and tastes great, it can also be a healthier alterna- tive to fried foods. And let’s be honest, there is just something so prim- itively satisfying about grilling one’s food over a fire! However, like all great things, barbecuing has its downsides that can be avoided with some careful considerations. Grilling at Home A BBQ in the garden is the simplest solution, as long as you follow com- mon-sense rules, like not placing your grill directly under a tree and never leaving it unattended, particularly when children are playing nearby. If you don’t have a garden, barbecuing is generally permitted on one’s own balcony, unless explicitly prohibited in your rental contract. That is not to say, however, that you may not encounter some resistance from your neighbors, particularly those that live above you. In order to minimize the nuisance that barbecuing could pose to your neighbors, consider following some simple guidelines: (1) Avoid the use of chemical starters or coals treated with chemical starters. Instead, try using more natural starters, such as paraffin-dipped wood shavings (available at stores like Migros) or a bellows for fanning. (2) As it is the smoke wafting up into your neighbor’s apartment that may start conflict, try to minimize smoke by never burning treated or fresh wood and avoiding foods with a lot of fat or a lot of marinade. Gas barbecues generally produce less smoke, thus making them good options for balcony use. BaselCitytour: Basel Now Has a Hop-on-Hop-off Bus! In April, Basel became the first city in Switzerland to offer a sightseeing bus tour! We have all seen them, and perhaps even used them, in larger cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. They are a great way to visit many parts of a large city in the shortest amount of time. The concept is simple—you buy a ticket for a defined period of time and can then “hop on and hop off” the bus at predetermined stops to visit as many locations on the route as you like before your time runs out. I love this time of year! Gardens and playgrounds are a flurry of activity with children and adults alike enjoying the warmth and sunshine that the summer brings. Perhaps best of all for me, though, is the chance to fire up the grill and enjoy al fresco dining. With outdoor eating comes the pos- sibility of a range of deliciously refreshing wines that have been largely overlooked since last summer. Let’s explore some of my favorite summer wine styles and the foods that really shine when they are paired together. Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature white grape variety. It accounts for about one-third of all grapes planted there. It is usually produced in two styles. Picked early, GV (as it’s affectionately known) produces racy whites with crisp acidity, green melon, citrus, and white pepper aromas. Late- picked grapes produce a different style altogether, full-bodied with stone- fruit aromas and spices. This bigger style of GV can be served with ease in the cooler months with roast chicken or rich seafood dishes. Basel’s Outdoor Jazz Fest August 19 This year will mark the 33rd edition of the must-experience “Em Bebbi sy Jazz”—the outdoor jazz event that takes place in Basel every year on a Friday night in late August. From 18:00 until about 01:00, dozens of jazz groups, including street bands and choirs with over 500 musicians and singers, will play on several stages set up throughout the city’s center. The festival locations range from the central post office, Marktplatz, Fischmarkt, Rümelinsplatz, Gerbergasse, and Leonhardskirchplatz to Gemsberg, Heuberg, Spalenberg, and Nadelberg.
