Before Mark Twain published A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889), he visited Nikola Tesla’s laboratory and recognized that the alternating-current machine he saw there would revolutionize American life. Before Jack London tried his hand at authorship, he spent six months training to become an electrician. My dissertation explores the literature of this period in relation to the rise of electric networks to reveal a complex and consequential set of interactions with technology previously unaccounted for within the scholarship of “the machine age.” Where the machine signified the sudden intrusion of industry into pristine nature, electricity represented latent power in the water and wind; where the machine connoted determinist aspects of the human self, electricity signified vitality, inventiveness, and even the sublime. By tracing the evolution of these technological symbols, I argue that writers of this era developed new literary forms, as well as rhetorics of the modern network society, that continue to shape our understanding of technology and modernity. The field of literary production incorporated electricity in everything during the turn of the twentieth century, from improved methods of printing (including electrotype and high speed presses) to figurative language that linked electricity with modern life. At the same time, electrical advertisements and trade journals frequently included poetry and literary allusions, while an array of scientists and technologists, from Harvard Professor of Physics John Trowbridge through General Electric engineer Charles Ripley, took up literary forms to capture the beauty and power of electricity. This feedback between technologists and literary artists iii contributed to an electric vocabulary—marked by new concepts like “electrocution” and “live wire”—which, I argue, inflected the rise of the modern American novel. Chapters One and Two investigate how electric execution challenged conventional narratives about technological modernity. In A Connecticut Yankee—published after New York passed its Electric Execution Act (1888) but before the first electric execution—Mark Twain illustrates the tension between the dangerous, tantalizing power of the electric charge and the symbolic progressivism of the electrical network. Alternating between technical and melodramatic depictions of electric circuits, he situates the fatal electric spark on the borders between realism and fantasy. Yet after the chair was first put to use in 1890, neither of these representational frameworks appeared suitable for describing the social meanings of this new device. Even Alphonso David Rockwell—an electro-medical doctor who helped “improve” the electric chair—described the electrocutions he witnessed as “unreal.” Drawing on archival and popular texts, Chapter Two explores how authors such as Stephen Crane, William Dean Howells, and Gertrude Atherton experimented with new representational frameworks for describing electrocution. Unlike writers who depicted electrocution as instantaneous, Atherton illustrates how the electric chair’s meanings are consistently produced around, as well as within, the moment of electric shock. In Patience Sparhawk and Her Times (1896), she describes her protagonist’s experience of the execution chamber as meta-textual; in the moments leading up to her electrocution, Patience chooses to act like a hero in a sensational news story rather than a person who has been wrongly sentenced to death. I argue that Atherton’s romance implicates modern systems of representation with a new form of capital punishment by hinting that the experience of electrocution could be mediated through the circulation of stories. iv Chapter Three reveals that literary artists found the power grid as complex and alluring as the electric chair. This chapter shows that Mary Hallock Foote’s novella, “The Harshaw Bride” (1896), and Jack London’s Sonoma Valley novels (1910-1915) portray the power distribution system as an emergent dimension of regional cultures. By illustrating how electrical networks might shape and be shaped by Western communities, these texts raise questions about contemporaneous narratives that linked the laying of telegraph wires to the “closing of the frontier,” and, concomitantly, the supposed disappearance of the Native American and the pioneer. This chapter argues that Foote and London’s western electrification narratives complicate the generic categories of regionalism and naturalism, respectively, by incorporating elements of utopianism and romance to describe the promise of new electrical frontiers. Western depictions of healthy, communal electrical grids anticipate a subgenre I call the “revitalization narrative,” a class of literature that describes the reawakening of bodies and communities. Defining and analyzing this subgenre, Chapter Four investigates how early twentieth-century authors used electrical analogies to grapple with changing definitions of health, life, and death. This chapter argues that Pauline Hopkins and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s euphoric descriptions of electrical revitalization counter medical discourses that privileged certain bodies while pathologizing others. Although these authors had divergent political aims, both narrate modern life in terms of a growing network society, writing against the individualistic paradigms of naturalistic literature. In so doing, they imagine a stronger relationship between electricity and the pastoral than we have previously seen in American literary history. They depict electricity moving like water through a landscape to refresh v communities and individuals within them, anticipating rhetorics of sustainability that would gain prominence later in the twentieth century. Power Lines analyzes how electric technologies impacted the development of American prose fiction during the turn of the twentieth century. I began this project in conversation with scholarship on the literature of “the machine age,” but recent work on electricity and American literary modernism and Romanticism (by Mark Goble and Paul Gilmore, respectively) signals the emergence of a new subfield that my work directly complements and expands. By examining how Gilman blends utopianism with scientific realism to describe humans as “storage batteries” —or how London shifts away from the modes and techniques of literary naturalism to describe idyllic and sustainable electric grids—I contend that we can trace how new networks inspired authors to complicate or to move outside of prescribed genre conventions. Ultimately, I argue that authors who experimented with new electrical forms and symbols created narratives that anticipated modernism by troubling the boundaries between realism, romance, regionalism, and utopianism. vi Acknowledgements The faculty and graduate students in the Department of English at the University of Illinois have helped me grow as a scholar and a person in myriad ways. I continued to study electricity in early American culture (1750 – 1890) an independent study with Trish Loughran. I would like to thank Stephanie Foote and Dale Bauer for challenging me to approach American literary history critically, for offering pointed and helpful feedback as I defined my field, for reading and improving early drafts of my first chapters, and for pointing me to texts such as Theodore Dreiser’s American Tragedy and Gertrude Atherton’s Patience Sparhawk and Her Times which strongly influenced my understanding of literary engagements with electric technologies. Though they are not members of my dissertation committee, these faculty members offered their support and feedback during formative stages of my development. This roughly coincided with the opening of China after Nixon’s famous visit, and for the first time in many years, Western academics were welcomed back into China to research and collaborate. Several publications arising from one such collaboration sparked what has become known as the neurasthenia-depression controversy and initiated a paradigm in cultural psychiatry termed the new cross-cultural psychiatry (NCCP). Almost without exception, research on SJSR has cited and relied upon the perspective and interpretation of writers situated within the paradigm of NCCP. Unfortunately, there has been no effort in the literature to make a comprehensive criticism of the predominant views of SJSR as they have been propagated over the past 40 years through NCCP writings. In this dissertation, I undertake this effort by first addressing the origins of neurasthenia in the West and then making a study of how SJSR came to be a salient category in China.

SPIRITUALITY AND PSYCHOTHERAPY: THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT Ernest Kurtz Some ninety years ago, at the time of the birth of modern psychotherapy in the United States as marked by Sigmund Freud’s visit to Clark University, the philosopher Josiah Royce warned against "confusing theology with therapy." Royce observed that much of the American debate over psychotherapy seemed to establish the health of the individual as the criterion of philosophical (and, by implication, theological) truth. Replying to that claim, Royce pointed out that "Whoever, in his own mind, makes the whole great world center about the fact that he, just this private individual, once was ill and now is well, is still a patient." (Holifield, 1983, p. 209, quoting Royce, 1909). But "patient" is a therapeutic term. Might Royce with equal justice have observed that "Whoever, in her own mind, makes the whole world center about the fact that she, just this private individual, once sinned but is now saved, is still far from the kingdom of heaven"? With what other variations of vocabulary might we conjure in this context? Whatever the vocabulary used, any discussion of the relationship between psychotherapy and spirituality necessarily takes place within the larger context of the relationship between science and religion. That relationship has often been less than happy. Ian Barbour’s Issues in Science and Religion (1966) and Philip Rieff’s The Triumph of the Therapeutic (1966) remain useful summaries. Yet even this generalization will draw disagreement, for spirituality and psychotherapy are two terms shrouded in diverse denotations and confusing connotations.

    EDISON AND GROWING HOSTILITIES1 By Raymond Wile The spring of 1878 witnessed a flurry of phonographic activity at the Edison laboratories. Caveats were filed with the United States Patent Office, and Prelimi­ nary Specifications were filed on April 24, 1878 which resulted in the eventual issuance of a British patent.2 Despite this initial activity, the Edison involvement rapidly wound down by the end of that summer. In September a fatal mistake occurred-final specifications were supplied for the British patent, but the equiva­ lent American applications were neglected. In December, an attempt was made to rectify the omission by predating a series of applications, but the U.S. Patent Office refused to allow this and the matter had to be dropped. Except for a patent applied for on March 29, 1879 and granted in 1880 the phonograph seems to have been completely abandoned by Edison in favor of his new interest in the electric light.3 During the first half of the eighties there is no evidence whatsoever of any phono­ graph activity emanating from Menlo Park. However, Edward H. Johnson, who had done much experimenting for the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company, did be­ come involved in some experimenting after his return from England in 1883-enough so for Bergmann and Company to bill the group for 192 1/2 hours of experimental work.4 Edison had become completely disenchanted and reasoned that the concept of the phonograph was incapable offurther developments. The members of the Edison Speak­ ing Phonograph Company were delighted to relieve Edison of the responsibility for further experimenting when he released them from the necessity of investing further capital.

The ‘televisual’ names a condition of transformation that is altering the coordinates through which we understand, theorize, intervene, and challenge contemporary media culture. Torres Consultant, Edison Electric Institute Power Restoration Coordinator, Puerto Rico Summary Since November 2017, I have served as the Power Restoration Coordinator in Puerto Rico and as a member of the Unified Command Group. Prior to my current position, I worked for more than 30 years for Consolidated Edison in New York. During my career, I managed emergency and storm restoration efforts and oversaw Con Edison’s response to major storms including Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, and emergencies such as the 9/11 attacks and the 2003 Northeast blackout. However, the damage caused by Hurricane Maria is unlike anything any of us in the industry has ever seen on the mainland United States. Without question, this power restoration mission has been the most challenging of my career. Having lived on the island now for more than five months, I can tell you that the people of Puerto Rico are the most resilient people I have ever met in my life. While their resiliency is admirable, nobody deserves to be without electricity for this long, and I and everyone involved in the restoration effort remain committed to working as one team, with one mission—providing power to our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico. As of April 8, PREPA reports that 96.4 percent of its customers—or approximately 1.42 million out of more than 1.47 million customers—who can receive electricity have had their power restored. While significant progress has been made across the island, restoring power to the remaining customers, most of whom are in the hardest-hit and most remote areas, remains challenging and labor- and time-intensive.
