By RICHARD JENKINS [email protected] HURLEY — A Milwaukee man faces felony charges in connection with an alleged assault this summer at an Iron County, Wis., summer camp. The assault charge is a Class B felony, with a maxi- mum potential sentence of 60 years in prison, while the other charge is a Class I felony, with a potential maximum sentence of a $10,000 fine and/or up to three years, six months in prison. The charges stem from an incident at Camp Thunder- head in Oma in July. Iron County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Matthew Foryan, according to the criminal complaint in the case, received a report from the Milwaukee Child Advocacy Center in November saying a 12-year-old had reported Richard Jenkins/Daily Globe sexual contact had occurred. The Pilgrim River Forest project, an acquisition that includes conservation easements on nearly 1,300 acres of prime forestland and 3.5 miles of the Pilgrim River corri- dor, is next to the Pilgrim River Community Forest. The effort to create the conservation easements also involved years of work by the Copper Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited, conservation-minded private landown- ers and community partners. The land provides habitat for black bear, deer, bald eagles, fishers, pine martens, beaver, mink, otters and migrating birds. The project promotes sustainable timber management, which benefits wildlife by creating forests in various stages of growth. Evan McDonald, executive director of the Keweenaw Land Trust, said, “The waters of the Pilgrim River reach Lake Superior, so the health of the watershed is impor- tant for the health of the larger ecosystem.” Benefits reach far into the future. “It ensures that the Pilgrim River will flow with clean water supporting brook trout and that a healthy forest Photo submitted will provide timber products, wildlife habitat and special THE WATERS of the Pilgrim River flow into Lake Superior and provide prime habitat for brook trout. places for the generations ahead to enjoy,” McDonald said.
