But the children, who all went to the gym to watch a movie, weren't the ones going to school. It was the parents. Hillcrest held its third Academic Parent Teacher Team meeting last Tuesday. West Laurens High School FFA member Sydney Lord recently partici- pated in the Area IV FFA Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event. The event was held at Treutlen High School in Soperton. The FFA Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event is designed to de- velop agricultural leadership. Participants are required to write and de- liver a speech on an agricultural-related topic. The participants are judged on content and composition of the manuscript, voice, stage pres- ence, power of expression, general effect and response to questions asked by a panel of judges. FFA is a national organization of over 610,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. FFA is an integral part of the agricultural education program in public schools. The East Laurens High School SkillsUSA organization received the Gold Chapter of Distinction at state competition in Atlanta on March 26th-28th. While at state competition, the group earned two gold medals, three sil- ver medals, two bronze medals and a state officer. The group consisted of 44 participants who competed in 22 different contests at the state lev- el. Winning gold for the School Project competition were Meredith Cut- ler, Daphine Ford and Alexis Lawson, and in the Healthcare Portfolio competition, the gold award winner was Tyler Lowe.
