OUR OPINION A sticky situation hat’s just what’s brewing at Eastside Elementary by way of a Guinness World T Record challenge. To wit: Build the planet’s largest ball of tape, surpassing the current record of 12.9 feet in cir- cumference and one cool ton. To beat it, the Eastsiders will have to hustle. Plus they will need tape, and lots of it — at least 3,000 rolls of more. They have a good start, having amassed about 1,200 rolls so far. The kids are excited but so are teachers, administrators and staff. We’re excited too. Why was it changed? We’ll know how this all plays out soon enough, on March 6. Columbia trailed for almost the entire first half in Friday’s District 2-6A semifinal. By the game’s end, CHS had another double-digit victory over No. 3 seed Chiles. The No. 2-seeded Tigers led by just two points early in the fourth quarter, but some big plays by the seniors propelled them to their 14th win in a row, 72-62. “We had to gut this one out,” Columbia coach Steve Faulkner said. “It’s been awhile since we really had to gut one out in my opin- ion, so it’s good for us and hopefully we can use it to springboard into (tonight).” CHS (24-2) will host top-seeded Lincoln tonight in the district champion- ship after the top-seeded Trojans (22-4) defeated No. 5 Leon 61-42 on Friday. The Tigers and Timberwolves followed that game, with Chiles (17-11) taking a 7-5 lead early and staying ahead for the rest of the half. “We tried to press them and they did a great job against it in the first half, and that was really hurting us,” Faulkner said. “My concern coming into the game was the rebounding battle because they were so big. So we made the deci- sion at halftime just to back up and guard. Down one at the half, I kind of felt fortu- nate because I didn’t think we played real well.” CHS went up 37-35 on the first possession of the second half with a 3-point- er by Jordan Smith, who finished with 10 points and was one of four Tigers to score in double figures. Darrien Jones led the team with 17 points, Charleston Ponds scored 16 and Kenney Gaines had 12. Columbia pushed its lead to double digits in the third, holding the Timberwolves to 10 points in the quarter. “Each one of them did something really good tonight,” Faulkner said of his starters. “I think it JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter Columbia center Marcus Owens grabs a in traffic against Chiles during Friday’s District 2-6A semifinal. So I can tell a big difference this year. They’re understanding the game a lot more.” Fort White has been reclassified from 5A to 1A, joining Bell, Branford, Lafayette and Taylor County in District 6-1A. But despite moving down, the Lady Indians are still in a tough divi- sion as Lafayette made it to the state semis last season, while Bell won 20 games before being ousted in the regional semis. The last time the Lady Indians made the playoffs was 2016, when they were in Class 1A before going to 5A. “There’s so much competition in 1A, just so much competition,” Padgett said. “We’re playing teams that every year are going to the playoffs so it kind of seems whether we’re 1A or 5A we play competitive teams just because of the area that we’re in.” Padgett will rely on junior pitcher Hailey Clemons, who started most of Fort White’s games last season.
