Columbia trailed for almost the entire first half in Friday’s District 2-6A semifinal. By the game’s end, CHS had another double-digit victory over No. 3 seed Chiles. The No. 2-seeded Tigers led by just two points early in the fourth quarter, but some big plays by the seniors propelled them to their 14th win in a row, 72-62. “We had to gut this one out,” Columbia coach Steve Faulkner said. “It’s been awhile since we really had to gut one out in my opinion, so it’s good for us and hopefully we can use it to springboard into (tonight).” CHS (24-2) will host top-seeded Lincoln tonight in the district championship after the top-seeded Trojans (22-4) defeated No. 5 Leon 61-42 on Friday. The Tigers and Timberwolves followed that game, with Chiles (17-11) taking a 7-5 lead early and staying ahead for the rest of the half. “We tried to press them and they did a great job against it in the first half, and that was really hurting us,” Faulkner said. “My concern coming into the game was the rebounding battle because they were so big. So we made the decision at halftime just to back up and guard. Down one at the half, I kind of felt fortunate because I didn’t think we played real well.” CHS went up 37-35 on the first possession of the second half with a 3-pointer by Jordan Smith, who finished with 10 points and was one of four Tigers to score in double figures. Darrien Jones led the team with 17 points, Charleston Ponds scored 16 and Kenney Gaines had 12.
