Filogenetske odnose smo ugotavljali z Bayesovo analizo in jih primerjali z morfološkimi določitvami osebkov in njihovo razširjenostjo. Filogenetski rezultati so potrdili prisotnost vsaj petih vrst (P. admetus, P. ripartii, P. aroaniensis, P. orphicus in P. eleniae) med našimi vzorci. Koritnik T. LA sl AL sl/en AI We studied the phylogenetic relationships in the subgenus of the Polyommatus (subgenus Agrodiaetus) butterflies in the Balkan Peninsula. Preliminarily identifications of all specimens were based on their wing morphology. In turn, all individuals were examined for a larger number of morphological characters, that proved useful in taxonomy of the subgenus. Phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed using the mitochondrial DNA gene COI, used as a DNA barcodes. We reconstructed phylogeny with the Bayesian analysis and then compared these results with the morphological characteristics and distribution ranges of studied species. Only Polyommatus admetus can be unambigously identified using morphological traits; the identiy of other herein studied species cannot be inferred from morphology alone due to high intraspecific variation. The phylogentic confirmed the presence of at least five species (P. admetus, P. ripartii, P. aroaniensis, P. orphicus in P. eleniae) in our samples. According to the geographical distribution of the samples, we could not confirm alopatry of closely related species. Simpatry between more closely related species suggests that even morphologically similar species are reproductively isolated. We also found that the distribution range of the P. orphicus species is larger than previously thought. Koritnik T. Butterflies and Botany of the Kackars in Turkey Greenwings holiday report 14-22 July 2018 Led by Martin Warren, Yiannis Christofides and Yasemin Konuralp White-bordered Grayling © Alan Woodward Greenwings Wildlife Holidays Tel: 01473 254658 Web: www.greenwings.co.uk Email: [email protected] ©Greenwings 2018 Introduction This was the second year of a tour to see the wonderful array of butterflies and plants in the Kaçkar mountains of north-east Turkey. These rugged mountains rise steeply from Turkey’s Black Sea coast and are an extension of the Caucasus mountains which are considered by the World Wide Fund for Nature to be a global biodiversity hotspot. The Kaçkars are thought to be the richest area for butterflies in this range, a hotspot in a hotspot with over 160 resident species. The valley of the River Çoruh lies at the heart of the Kaçkar and the centre of the trip explored its upper reaches at altitudes of 1,300—2,300m. The area consists of steep-sided valleys with dry Mediterranean vegetation, typically with dense woodland and trees in the valley bottoms interspersed with small hay-meadows. In the upper reaches these merge into alpine meadows with wet flushes and few trees. The highest mountain in the range is Kaçkar Dağı with an elevation of 3,937 metres The tour was centred around the two charming little villages of Barhal and Olgunlar, the latter being at the fur- thest end of the valley that you can reach by car. The area is very remote and only accessed by a narrow road that winds its way up the valley providing extraordinary views that change with every turn.

BULGARIA Nick Greatorex-Davies. European Butterflies Group Contact ([email protected]) Local Contact Prof. Stoyan Beshkov. ([email protected]) National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Sofia, Butterfly Conservation Europe Partner Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Stanislav Abadjiev compiled and collated butterfly records for the whole of Bulgaria and published a Local Recording Scheme distribution atlas in 2001 (see below). Records are still being gathered and can be sent to Stoyan Beshkov at NMNH, Sofia. Butterfly List See Butterflies of Bulgaria website (Details below) Introduction Bulgaria is situated in eastern Europe with its eastern border running along the Black Sea coast. It is separated from Romania for much of its northern border by the River Danube. It shares its western border with Serbia and Macedonia, and its southern border with Greece and Turkey. Bulgaria has a land area of almost 111,000 sq km (smaller than England but bigger than Scotland) and a declining human population of 7.15 million (as of 2015), 1.5 million of which live in the capital city, Sofia. It is very varied in both climate, topography and habitats. Substantial parts of the country are mountainous, particularly in the west, south-west and central ‘spine’ of the country and has the highest mountain in the Balkan Mountains (Musala peak in the Rila Mountains, 2925m) (Map 1). Almost 70% of the land area is above 200m and over 27% above 600m. About 40% of the country is forested and this is likely to increase through natural regeneration due to the abandonment of agricultural land. Following nearly 500 years under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria was independent for just a few years from 1908 before coming under the domination of the soviet communist regime in 1946.

E-mail:[email protected] Abstract The morphology of scale micro- and nanostructures were investigated in three species of the monophyletic Polyommatus eros species group and in two closely related outgroup species P. ariana (MOORE, 1865) and P. icarus (DENIS et SCHIFFERMÜLLER, 1775) by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The optical properties of the blue wing dorsa were studied by reflection spectroscopy in the ultraviolet-visible range. We found ingroup correlations between nanomorphology of the scales and the spectral position of the reflectivity maxima. The closely related species of the P. eros group showed qualitatively similar spectra but quantitatively they revealed characteristic features. The outgroup species P. ariana and P. icarus underlined these observations as they possessed quantitatively distinct scale nanomorphology and their reflectivity maxima were clearly different as compared with those of the P. eros group. We discuss that the optical values of the structural colouration of the species we examined play an important role in pre-mate signaling, which creates a successive barrier between taxa otherwise similar in wing pattern and genital structures. We conclude that reflectance measurements may turn into a cheap and handy tool to probe relationships within a given monophyly, in which taxa are otherwise uniform when traditional taxonomic characters are studied.

It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to 11 nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inference of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focus sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus- level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses. In addition to a consensus tree, we provide the posterior distribution of trees and the fully-concatenated alignment for future analyses.

P. (A.) ripartii (Freyer , 1830) is recorded for the first time for the Central European part of Russia. The local population of P. (A.) ripartii Frr. inhabits a steppe biotope utilising Onobrychis tanaitica as foodplant. It is suggested that the specimens of Maculinea alcon ([Denis & S chiffermuller ], 1775) from Central Russia were in fact the mixture of the two species Maculinea alcon ([Denis & S chiffermuller ], 1775) and Maculinea rebeli (Hirschke , 1904). The problem of establishing scientific mini-reserves at areas of spe cific plant and insect diversity is discussed. Introduction Scanning the Lepidoptera collection made by the zoologist Sergei Riabov in 1983-1986 from Tula region we discovered two males of the lycaenid butterfly Polyommatus (Agrodiaet- us) ripartii (Freyer , 1830), which is extremely unusual for that region. The butterfl y subgenus Agrodiaetus of the genus Polyommatus (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) is distributed in the western and central Palaearctic and represents a taxonomically challenging group due to its rapid diversifi cation coupled, in many cases, with very limited availability of morphological diagnostic characters. In this study we provide a detailed overview of this subgenus in the Romanian fauna, a country where scattered, poorly documented records suggest the presence of three species: Polyom- matus (Agrodiaetus) damon, P.

Subject Editor: Zdenëk F. Fric. Abstract. The Dinara Massif range is the highest mountain range in Croatia, located in the southeastern part of the country. During the last three years we conducted a butterfly survey on three mountains belonging to the Dinara Massif: Dinara, Kamesnica and Troglav. We recorded 94 butterfly species; for the first time exact localities were given for 46 of them, while two were entirely new records for the area. A comparison with five other mountains belonging to the Dinaric Arc was performed using the Sorensen similarity index, which revealed that Blidinje (Cvrsnica & Vran complex) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Mt. Velebit in Croatia have the highest similarity with the Dinara Massif Several rare species were recorded during this survey, of which Polyommatus ripartii (Freyer, 1830) represents the second record for Croatia. The known ranges for Pieris balcana (Lorkovic, 1970), Polyommatus damon (Dennis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Polyommatus eros (Ochsenheimer, 1 808) and Polyommatus ripartii in Croatia were much expanded. The egg-laying behaviour of Polyommatus (Agrodiaetus) admetus (Esper, [1783]) Abstract: The egg-laying behaviour of Polyommatus (Agrodiaetus) admetus (Esper, [1783]) is described. A female observed in the wild deposited her eggs into little cavities on the surface of dry herbaceous plants and seeds and also well-hidden into dry flowers or seed stands. No oviposition took place on green plants. Normally the larvae hibernate within the egg, in captivity some times larvae hatch in autumn. A.) mithridates (S t a u d i n g e r , 1878) herauszufinden.

On the generic position of Polyommatus avinovi (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). Folia Biologica (Kraków) 64: 267-273. Polyommatus avinovi (Stshetkin, 1980), an enigmatic taxon from Tajikistan has been considered in the literature either as a member of the genus Polyommatus, or a taxon belonging to the genus Rimisia. None of the conclusions on taxonomy and nomenclature of P. avinovi were supported by molecular or cytological data, therefore the problem of identity and phylogenetic position of this taxon has remained unsolved. Here we use the barcoding fragment of the COI gene as a molecular marker to demonstrate that none of these hypotheses are true. Phylogenetic analysis revealed P. avinovi to be strongly differentiated from both Polyommatus and Rimisia. Instead, it formed a separated, well supported monophyletic clade within the genus Afarsia Korb & Bolshakov, 2011. Thus, we propose the following new combinations for this butterfly: Afarsia avinovi comb. nov. and Afarsia avinovi dangara comb. nov. Key words: Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae, Polyommatina, phylogeny, Afarsia avinovi comb. nov., Afarsia avinovi dangara comb. nov., DNA barcode.
