According to Montgomery Fire Capt. Mark Chretien, the dry hydrant system pulls water from a stream or pond through a six-inch diameter pipe in the center of the pool of water. It goes underground and up an embankment towards the road, and becomes a hydrant through a series of fittings, allowing the fire truck to pull alongside and make a connec- tion. In this case, the pond is formed by a brook that drains down from the swamp at the top of the mountain on Montgomery Road down to the Old Westfield Reservoir. Chretien said the pond is one of the main reliable sources of water in town, and never dries up. It is also located near the largest concentration of homes in Montgomery, and is a pri- Westfield Post 124 vs. Longmeadow mary drafting site for the town. THE WESTFIELD NEWS WWW.THEWESTFIELDNEWS.COM MONDAY, JULY 15, 2019 - PAGE 7 Incoming Tabasco CEO Harold Osborn embraces his early start BY DAN BOUDREAUX Associated Press AVERY ISLAND, La. (AP) — From his formative days stocking shelves at the Tabasco commissary on Avery Island to today as he steps into his new role as the eighth president and CEO of the McIlhenny Co., Harold Osborn has seen family as one of the company’s greatest strengths. In the company’s 150-year history, every president and CEO has been a member of the McIlhenny family and many have worked on Avery Island throughout their lives. Osborn stamped prices on canned goods, dug ditches and worked in the factory bot- tling Tabasco sauce before going to college, working on his own, return- ing to Avery Island and years later being named to the top position at his family’s business earlier this month. “I was the lowliest of the low and I loved it,” Osborn said. “It gave me a real understanding of everything we do here and what has made this com- pany so great over the past 150 years. Of course, I think it’s very important to work your way up through the company because I also think it pro- vides integrity and institutional knowledge. While most companies prohibit this kind of family connec- tion, we embrace it.” Osborn said this also lets his employees, the majority of whom are multigenerational McIlhenny employees, know that their boss is familiar with their concerns and ideas because he’s been there. While most large companies look at the bottom line, he said, McIlhenny tries to “live what we do.” “I think the McIlhenny Co. would like to keep it very family oriented,” said Coy Boutte, a fourth-generation employee and manager of the aging warehouse. “They’ve been here six generations, and they have families who have been working here just as long making Tabasco sauce for them. I think they really like and appreciate seeing that family bonding in a com- pany. “I think there are some advantages of it, like I personally know the CEO and the VPs of the company. You get to see them, they walk around the island, you talk to them. I think that’s a big advantage.” Many children of McIlhenny employees and family members spend summers working on Avery Island when they are old enough. This helps build connections for the next generation to the company and with one another whether they hoe peppers in the fields or run the entire corporation. I love to walk, and I make it a point to walk at least two miles every day. My parents walked together every night after dinner, and they lived into their 80s and had a very close marriage. My brother and I joined them many nights when we were younger, and I have great memories of that family time together. On The Tube Every time I ask my husband if he will join me, he says that’s for me, not him. I’ve told him that walking makes me feel so good. It helps with my digestion. It helps me sleep better. I keep my figure better because of walking. My doctor says I am in good shape largely because of my two-mile daily walk. If you or any of your readers have suggestions for how I can motivate him to join me, please let me know. -- Walking Alone Dear Walking Alone: Congratulations on all that walking! Our joints love movement, and you have found an ideal exercise for you. The key is to have your husband believe that walking is ideal for him, too, and that is not so easy. Look for walking trails in your neighborhood and see if taking him into new scenery sparks his interest in walking. Is he a dog lover? Nevertheless, your con- tributions make the moment livelier and less rote. You’ll feel as though you need to head in another direction. Tonight: The unexpected occurs. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) HHHHH Whether you’re speaking about a child, a problem or a new friend, your creativity surges. Others could be easily charmed by your suggestions. An unexpected insight could add even more to the moment. Tonight: Let a loved one make the first move. ONE BIG HAPPY Rick Detorie LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) HHHH No matter what might come down the path, stay centered. You might draw in someone who could surprise you with their actions and views, especially around your domestic life and career. To- night: Be aware of differences. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) HHHHH You speak your mind, but that doesn’t mean that others understand. Be ready to explain your thoughts more completely. Once the conversation has started, you’ll see a personal matter dif- ferently. Tonight: First, return calls. Then decide. Mahoney, Goldsmith and Garnett SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) ANDY CAPP HHH Be more in touch with your spend- ing and budget. You tend to take risks. Sometimes, you even tend to be extrava- gant. If you want more positive results, you might need to practice saying no. Maintain your sense of humor. Tonight: Remember that fun doesn’t have to cost. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHHH At present, you could be over- whelmed by what lands on your plate. A child or new friend feels strongly about what he or she needs from you. You could be surprised by what someone requests. Cryptoquip Tonight: You can always say no. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) ZACK HILL John Deering and John Newcombe HHH You sense that much is going on behind the scenes and affecting your day. You might not be sure what’s bothering you, but you’ll figure it out. Until you know more, try not to make any major commitments. Tonight: Make it an early night. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) HHHHH You could be very confused about your choices and not sure which way you want to go. An element of ex- citement surrounds your choices. You could opt to lean in a certain direction. Much could change; stay open. Tonight: Be spontaneous. PAGE 14 - MONDAY, JULY 15, 2019 www.thewestfieldnews.com THE WESTFIELD NEWS
