816117 St Louis Cardinals Berkman eyes return to field within a week DERRICK GOOLD Cardinals first baseman said he plans to run the bases and may even take batting practice with teammates down in the interior batting cage this afternoon as he speeds toward a return to the field. Berkman acknowledged that the organization is probably going to insist he take a rehab assignment to get some at-bats before returning to the active roster. He would prefer not to go on the rehab assignment and just emerge fully-formed and active from the disabled list on the major-league roster. It appears at least a cameo with Class AA Springfield is likely. That could come as soon as next weekend. "I'm sure they'd like to see me play somewhere before I come back," Berkman said this morning before tying on his cleats for the planned run. "It's just getting back in baseball shape (now). I may try to hit in the cage. I'm fixin' to go out and run the bases. Maybe I'll play a little catch." Berkman had knee surgery in May, but he explained because there wasn't much swelling after the procedure he was able to maintain his strength in both legs. That has eased his return. 816118 St Louis Cardinals Lohse leads Cards to a 3-2 win DERRICK GOOLD ST. LOUIS • For a second consecutive game against the , the Cardinals didn't make as much as they could have with their opportunities to open up offensively. pitched well enough that it didn't matter. In one of his most commanding outings of the season, Lohse held the Marlins to two runs on three hits and guided the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory Saturday at Busch Stadium. Tony Cruz contributed a key two-run triple and provided the other run as the Cardinals, for a second consecutive day, had a handful of missed opportunities to turn a taut game into a more comfortable one. Closer allowed two bases hits in the ninth inning but pitched around them to claim his 20th save of the season. In six consecutive starts, Lohse has pitched at least seven innings and allowed no more than three earned runs. Saturday was his seventh consecutive start allowing three or fewer runs. Both of the runs Miami scored came on a Justin Ruggiano that momentarily put the Marlins ahead in the second inning. Beyond that homer, the Marlins managed little against Lohse. "That's as good as he's been," manager said. "He was commanding the ball well enough to get them to do what he needed them to do. That's not easy against that lineup." Lohse (9-2) did not allow a batter to reach second base after the homer. The only batter of the final 13 he faced to reach base did so on an error, and Lohse promptly erased him -- leadoff hitter Jose Reyes -- with a pickoff that froze Reyes so offensively that the speedster didn't even take a step back to the base. He just stood straight up from his crouch and awaited the tag. "We feel we should be better than we are or where our record is," Loihse said. "It's a little like last year in that regard." The Cardinals and Marlins conclude the first half of their seasons Sunday at Busch Stadium. The All-Star break begins Monday with the Home Run Derby in Kansas City with the 83rd All-Star Game to follow Tuesday from Kauffman Stadium. All-Star Stanton removed with knee injury A big muscle behind the National League's chance to win Monday's Home Run Derby in Kansas City left this afternoon's game at Busch Stadium with a knee injury that has become enough of a concern that his participation in next week's All-Star festivities is a concern. Miami Marlins slugger and was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the third inning this afternoon. The team announced several innings later that Stanton had renewed discomfort in his right knee. The official announcement did not say anything more about his availability or the significance of the issue. He has missed games this week and was limited to a pinch-hit appearance in Friday's game by knee discomfort. The game has entered the seventh inning with the Cardinals lead, 3-2. Marlins starter has been excused from the game after throwing five standard innings against the Cardinals. In his 30th career start against the Cardinals, the former Cub allowed three runs on seventh hits and two walks. He struck out four. Tony Cruz's triple pushes Cardinals ahead, 3-2 For the immediate future the Cardinals' catching duties will be handled by Tony Cruz, and while first and foremost his responsibilities will be guiding the starters and limiting the opponent's running game chipping in a hit or two would be helpful. For example, this afternoon in the fourth inning. Cruz keyed the Cardinals' three-run inning and lifted them to a 3-2 lead with his triple down the right-field line. Cruz scored and Skip Schumaker to turn what was 2-0 Marlins lead into a one-run lead the other direction. Schumaker started the rally with an RBI -- the Cardinals' first hit of the ballgame with a runner in scoring position. One of the game's best hitters with runners in scoring position this season has been , who took an average of nearly .400 into this home stand. (OK, it was .397.) Molina left the team suddenly Friday to be his wife after the death of her grandfather in Puerto Rico. Molina was placed on the bereavement list and will miss at least the remaining games until the All-Star break and the All-Star Game. His absence has meant Cruz's promotion from backup to starter. Bryan Anderson is likely to start Sunday, however, because of his familiarity with the pitcher, Joe Kelly. Cruz entered the game with a .186 average so far this season in minimal and sporadic playing time. In 132 plate appearances in his career, he had yet to hit a triple. But with the Cardinals 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position today and 3-for-19 in the past two games, Cruz rocketed a skipper down the right field line that eluded Justin Ruggiano. Cruz had time to run. He also brought in two runs. That only hit tripled his RBI total for the season. He had one coming into Saturday's start. *** Marlins jump to a 2-0 lead Current sensation for the Miami Marlins, outfielder Justin Ruggiano extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer that put the Fish ahead 2-0 in the top of the second inning. The first-pitch temp at Busch Stadium was 106 degrees. An on-fielder thermometer photographed earlier for MLB said the on-field temp was 120 degrees. The ball is flying as a result. Two bolts hit in the first inning carried like few do normally at big, pitcher-friendly Busch Stadium. put one near the wall, and a leadoff fly out by Jose Reyes lofted into deep center field. Ruggiano's had the same extended flight -- only it cleared the wall and went 10 or so rows deep into the outfield bleachers. The homer came on Kyle Lohse's 1-0 pitch to the righthanded-hitting Ruggiano. It was his sixth homer of the season. Ruggiano has bounced around a bit already this season, but came into Saturday's game with a .405 average. The Cardinals, who went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position Friday night, are already 0-for-3 this afternoon. *** Cardinals will stick with rotation as is Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will not use the upcoming All-Star break to tinker with his starting rotation, going instead with the group as it is right now and not scoring an extra start this month for one of his more consistent pitchers, today's starter Kyle Lohse. Matheny announced this afternoon that will start the first game back from the break -- a Friday game in Cincinnati. The rest of the starters will fall in as they have been. at CIN, Saturday at CIN, Sunday Kyle Lohse at MIL, Monday Joe Kelly at MIL, Tuesday Adam Wainwright at MIL, Wednesday Rinse. Repeat. There could have been temptation to starting the second half of the season with Lohse and grabbing an extra start for the righty this month. Matheny said the staff looked at the series, looked at the success the pitchers have had against those teams, and decided to stick with the rotation as is. If Lynn appears in Tuesday's All-Star Game this rotation is not expected to change. Matheny believes the way it is set up allows for Lynn to appear in the game and still have enough rest to be ready for a start on Saturday at Great American Ball Park. *** Berkman eyes return to field within a week Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman said he plans to run the bases and may even take batting practice with teammates down in the interior batting cage this afternoon as he speeds toward a return to the field. Berkman acknowledged that the organization is probably going to insist he take a rehab assignment to get some at-bats before returning to the active roster. Returns were also noteworthy in the lineup this afternoon. Late in Friday's game, two All-Stars had dings that made them questionable for this afternoon's game in 106-degree temps (so far) at Busch Stadium. Rafael Furcal was lifted for a when a soreness in his shin flared up. was plunked by a pitch. Both are starting today. Here is the lineup that will back Kyle Lohse: 1. Rafael Furcal, SS 2. , CF 3. 816119 St Louis Cardinals Matheny addresses logjam at second base JOE STRAUSS A day after giving Matt Carpenter a surprise start at second base, Cardinals manager Matheny disclosed that he harbored more concerns about how the move could affect clubhouse chemistry than about Carpenter's middle infield defense. Matheny said he spoke to Skip Schumaker, and Tyler Greene before writing Carpenter into Thursday's lineup at second base. The fact that Carpenter started against lefthander Christian Friedrich underscored the erosion of righthanded-hitting Tyler Greene's playing time. "It's just truth at that point. This is where we are and I know it's not necessarily something" Greene wants to hear, Matheny said. "They should want to be in there. I get that. But I also believe if I'm more concerned about that and not what gives us the best chance to win it's not the right situation. "I care about each of these guys. I've made that very clear. I'll continue to. And whether they buy it or not isn't up to me. I want to see them all succeed individually. But I want to see us all succeed collectively. There are going to be tough times like that. Everyone has them." Greene, hitting .228, has started four times since June 17. He has produced one extra-base hit and two stolen bases since May 28. Carpenter's appearance at second base offered an obvious nod toward offense. Cardinals second basemen entered the weekend ranked 13th in batting average (.246), sixth in on-base percentage (.329) and 10th in slugging (.387) in the National League. 816120 St Louis Cardinals Do the Cards have the goods to land another Furcal or Weaver? Derrick Goold A common phrase often used by coaches and officials to describe the process of developing a prospect in the minors is "trying to increase his value to the organization." Left unsaid is that value may be in moving to another organization. With the July non-waiver trade deadline looming, minor-league systems like the Cardinals' come into true focus when the talent is has to offer plays a role in the major- league contributors a team can acquire. In each of past two seasons, the Cardinals made deals with minor-league who essentially played their way into those trades. In 2006, Terry Evans blossomed at High-A and was flipped to the LA Angels for pitcher Jeff Weaver, an October titan for that team. Last summer, Alex Castellanos hit .319 with 19 homers for Class AA and was sent to the Dodgers for Rafael Furcal. "When you look at a minor-league system there is a bandwidth of value to the players," Cardinals general manager said. "Not everyone views it the same way. The set of lenses you may have internally for analytics and scouting may differ from team to team. The importance is that you understand what you have. You want to give up that elite player." A surging player offers a test of that "bandwidth." Evans didn't hit better than .250 at a full-season club before hitting .311 with 15 homers in the hitter-friendly Florida State League in 2006. He went from the edge of the prospect picture to an asset that brought in a major-league contributor. Castellanos was a similar case, especially when it came to past expectations meeting sudden production. "They each had the tools that are attractive to scouts and now they had the numbers to go with those tools," farm director John Vuch said. "Going into 2011, would you have Castellanos would be a contributor to winning a World Series? That's what he did." This year, the Cardinals have had a handful of players make a surge that could change their value, internally and externally. Outfielder Mike O'Neill, a .312 hitter last season, has a .355 average and an organization-best .441 on-base percentage. Pitcher Eric Fornataro has the appealing size and now a 2.78 ERA as a Class AA reliever, righty Richard Castillo is 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA in Class AA, and reliever Jorge Rondon has velocity to go with his 16 in 22 innings at Class AA. As Mozeliak said, the challenge is for the Cardinals to "understand" what the player's potential truly is, and where it fits in the organization. Castellanos, for example, was an outfielder for the Cardinals. The Dodgers moved him to second base, and he's hitting .360 in Class AAA with nine homers and 11 steals. He had never hit better than .270 in a complete season with a full-season affiliate until his breakout in 2011. That increased his value to the Cardinals by drawing interest from another team, one that may have added to his value by shifting positions. Neither Evans or Castellanos got a ring, but both contributed to a World Series. "It's more fun with you see a player you develop contribute up here in St. Louis," Vuch said, "but it's no less important to see a player you developed help the major- league club from what he was able help you get in return." ON THE FARM Slugger was placed on the Class AAA disabled list to get a break from elbow soreness. Adams, who was with the major-league club earlier this season, will likely need offseason surgery to remove debris that has caused him pain in his right elbow for several seasons. ... Jesus Montero, who had one homer in his first 193 at-bats at a domestic affiliate, launched two in his game for Batavia this season. Montero, a career .225 hitter as a pro before Batavia, had 10 hits in his first 17 at-bats (.588) and seven in his previous 12 (.583) entering the weekend. Montero was hitting .415 with a .642 in his first 14 games at the level and moonlighting at DH for additional at-bats. 816121 St Louis Cardinals Aces, friends Carpenter, Halladay on the shelf Rick Hummel It was the best-pitched postseason game in 20 years, since Minnesota's Jack Morris beat Atlanta and John Smoltz (who also didn't allow a run), 1-0, in 10 innings in the seventh and final game of the 1991 World Series. In the decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series last October, the Cardinals' outpitched one of his closest friends, Philadelphia righthander Roy Halladay, 1-0, to keep the Cardinals in step on their improbable march to the World Series. It was the first time the former Toronto teammates had faced each other and Carpenter came up with perhaps the game of his life. The two pitchers, putting the playing field behind them, took a fishing vacation together in the off-season and then began preparing for another season in which they hoped to meet again. They won't. "Now, we're both out," said Carpenter. "My wife and I were just talking about it. "You have that game, and everything we've been through. Then we went and enjoyed a nice trip together for the first time in a long time. And then we're both down." The irony is thick. But there is at least one reason why Carpenter, 37, and Halladay, 35, are in the spot they are. "We're old," said Carpenter, smiling. Carpenter is done for the season with upcoming surgery to remove pressure from a nerve that has rendered his pitching shoulder weak. Halladay hasn't been pitching either, sidelined for seven weeks since he last pitched here on May 25. But he figures to be back later this month after a lat problem heals. "I hope his results come out a lot better than mine," Carpenter, "and I think they will." In an imperfect world, Carpenter, next year at 38, would like to face Halladay — or really anybody again. And, while he isn't particularly awards-conscious, he has his eye on one he has won twice before. Carpenter hopes to be the first major leaguer to win the Comeback Player Award three times. He already has won in 2004 and 2009 when he returned with big years after missing all or most of the previous season. "Why not?" Carpenter said. "That would be funny stuff. "Of everything I've gotten, when you put those up on the mantel when you're done, it shows everything you've been through and the hard work you put into it, both on and off the field." , who managed Carpenter in St. Louis, said he feels Carpenter's loss and he isn't even managing anymore, except for the All-Star Game next week. "I'd put the flag at half-mast," said La Russa. "I'm exaggerating a little. I don't want to demean when you actually do that, but it was a really sad day (to hear of Carpenter's surgery). I don't envy the rehab he has to go through. He's been through it too many times already. And I don't like something taken away from somebody who loves that something so much." NEWS ITEM: St. Louisan Gerry Davis will be the home-plate umpire and crew chief for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Kansas City. It will be his second such assignment. HUMMEL'S TAKE: Davis' first All-Star Game behind the plate was the 7-7 tie in 11 innings in 2002 at Milwaukee. "I remember when they got to the ninth and the score was tied, I was thinking, 'Boy, they've used a lot of pitchers already,'" Davis said. "You were thinking, 'What are their options? Would they really use a position player to pitch in the All-Star Game?''' Commissioner Bud Selig finally made the move to halt the game after 11 innings because both teams were out of pitchers. Davis joked, "I like to tell everybody I had the last say in that. I said, 'Yes, sir, Mr. Commissioner.' "But in comparison, even a tie All-Star Game in baseball is better than the All-Star games in basketball and football." Davis is hoping for a cleaner game this time. "It would be nice if this weren't tied by the time we got to the ninth," he said. 816122 St Louis Cardinals Berkman ready to return to Cardinals RICK HUMMEL While one 2011 National League All-Star outfielder is fixing to play next week after having had right knee surgery, a 2012 National League All-Star outfielder is headed for surgery Sunday morning to fix his right knee. The Cardinals' Lance Berkman, who is a first baseman now, said he expected to be playing after the Cardinals return from their All-Star break. Berkman, who had surgery in late May, is slated to work out with the club Thursday afternoon here before the team travels to Cincinnati. Berkman, however, may be traveling somewhere else, if he is fit enough, perhaps to Class AA Springfield. "We're still talking about it," Berkman said. "I'm sure they'd like to see me go play a little somewhere." This is not necessarily what Berkman wanted to hear. "There are probably four for five things I don't like about , but you're going to have to do them if you're going to play," Berkman said. Shortly after Berkman spoke Saturday afternoon, Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who had been out of the lineup lately with some loose debris in his right knee, came out of the game after only two innings. Stanton told manager Ozzie Guillen that he could hit, but not play in the field. Soon, Stanton was on a plane to Miami, where he was to have arthroscopic surgery at 7 a.m. on Sunday. It is estimated he will be out a month. Berkman is at the stage of running the bases and taking indoor batting practice. He will ramp it down a bit the next few days after Sunday, not wanting to burden the Cardinals' medical and physical fitness staffs. "I'm not going to make these guys come in here," Berkman said. "These guys need a break. They've been going at it hard. I'm giving everybody a break, including myself." Berkman said his knee "feels really good. It's just about getting back into baseball shape." "The good thing about this is that I didn't have a lot of swelling. That helped to speed the recovery." St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.08.2012

816123 St Louis Cardinals Freese back in the .290s RICK HUMMEL After a venture into the .250s, David Freese has attained his more customary .290s plateau by going four for five in the first two games of this series. He also was hit by pitches twice and walked Saturday after having three hits Friday. "I'm in a better place than I was a few weeks ago," Freese said. "The home runs were there but that's not quite the type of hitter I am. I think I'm a line-drive guy. My approach right now is a little bit satisfying " But the previous night's game wasn't all gravy. Freese, who had committed only five errors all season, made two in the same inning, leading to a Marlins score. "(The ball) was finding me a lot," Freese said. But, of his overall defense, he said, "I'm proud of what I've been doing over there. (Coach Jose) Oquendo has helped me out a lot. Last night was just one those days. "But this is the big leagues, and you've got to make plays." St. Louis Post Dispatch LOADED: 07.08.2012

816124 St Louis Cardinals Anderson might get to catch Sunday Rick Hummel Catcher Bryan Anderson, up from Memphis for the weekend while Yadier Molina is on bereavement leave, might get a start Sunday with Joe Kelly —whom he has handled this year — pitching for the Cardinals. Anderson, who has raised his minor league average to .210 after an awful start, is spending his fifth season in a row at Class AAA Memphis, with only an occasional recall here. "It's not some place you want to be that long," said Anderson, 25. "I'm just trying to improve my game so that some day I can get out of there. "It's not your goal growing up to play in Memphis for your life." AROUND THE BASES Rafael Furcal was back in the lineup after coming out for a pinch runner in the ninth inning Friday. Furcal said he had been bothered by a right shin injury for more than a month. ... Matheny likes rookie Kelly's approach. "He's kept his mouth shut and done a lot of listening," Matheny said. "And he's an athlete. He's as strong as anybody we've got, and I know he can jump out of a gym, too. Hopefully, he doesn't go into a gym and try to jump out of it." 816125 St Louis Cardinals Cruz makes most of his chance to play DERRICK GOOLD There was a time, during the nascent days of his professional career, when it appeared as if Tony Cruz's bat would be potent enough to earn him a few promotions and maybe even get him, a 26th-round pick with uncertain potential, up and out of Class A. "That feels like a long time ago," he said Saturday. "The next year I was converted to catcher." That change of position and his dogged work to improve at it gave Cruz, 25, a different route through the system and a more certain place in the organization even as he was warned all the work at catching could cost his hitting. There are still days, though, when both come together. He ended last month with his first major-league home run in a start at Miami, the big-league ballpark closest to his South Florida hometown. And on Saturday he drilled a two-run triple in a the Cardinals' 3-2 victory against the same Marlins that proved to be the winner because of the work he helped Kyle Lohse do from the mound. This season, the hits have been like starts for Cruz — few and far between. Those are not unrelated events. Few starts means fewer chances for Cruz to keep his bat tuned for what he called "game speed." But with Gold Glove-winner Yadier Molina away from the team to help his wife through the death of her grandfather, the Cardinals are turning to Cruz to carry the catching. "First of all, I make it very clear (to him) he shouldn't go out there trying to establish himself as a backup. He's a catcher," manager Mike Matheny said. Saturday was "an all-around good job by a guy who hasn't gotten the opportunities. He's made the most of them when he's gotten them. ... You never know when something is going to happen. "He's our guy right now." Cruz tripled his RBI total for the season with his fourth-inning triple that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead for the Cardinals. Cruz poked a pitch from Marlins' righty Carlos Zambrano down the right-field line and past a scrambling right fielder for the first triple in 133 major-league at-bats. It was also the first time this season that he drove in someone other than himself. His only previous RBI was a solo homer. That's one of the costs of minimal starts. Molina went on the bereavement list Friday. That night's game and Saturday's were the first consecutive starts for Cruz this season and only the second set of back-to- back starts of his career. "It's hard enough as a backup player," Matheny said. "But when you have somebody who plays as often as Yadi does — especially at that position because there are so many opportunities for things to go poorly." Cruz, who took a .186 average into Saturday's game, threw himself into the new position in the minors, accepting an invitation to play winter ball in Hawaii specifically to learn how to catch on the job. When he got a promotion to the majors in 2011, Cruz won over coaches and pitchers with how he immersed himself in pre-game meetings, game-calling, and other responsibilities. That helped him win the backup job this spring when pitted against Bryan Anderson. Lohse used his win Saturday as an example of Cruz's development. Lohse shook the young catcher off only once. Cruz wanted a fastball. Lohse wanted to throw a . He skipped it in the dirt. "He doesn't sit there on the bench and say, 'Oh, well, I'm going to catch one of every six games,'" Lohse said. "You look at the game he called today. ... Back there I trust him just like I trust Yadi." The similarity is on purpose. Cruz will watch innings from the bench and follow along with Molina's calls. He'll ask the catcher about the pitches between innings, and there are times when Cruz will retire to the video room to watch on television so he gets a clearer view of what Molina calls and where he sets up. Cruz will also run between the bullpen and the dugout during the game so he catches the relievers and gets to know their stuff better. A .288 hitter in his first two pro seasons, Cruz sagged to .220 in his first extended turn as a Class AA catcher in 2009. He has regained his average since and hit .262 in the majors last season. "Seeing more pitches, the timing comes with that," Cruz said. "... There were always doubts. There are doubts from other people. That's why you work hard to prove those other people wrong." 816126 St Louis Cardinals Lohse adds heat to Cardinals' win at steamy Busch RICK HUMMEL The game-time temperature of 106 degrees Saturday was the highest in Busch Stadium III's history and the highest recorded at any venue here since at least 1988. Still, after the Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 3-2, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny thought his starting pitcher, Kyle Lohse, was at his highest efficiency of the season. Lohse worked at least seven innings for the sixth straight time this season, marking another high. It was the most consecutive starts he'd had at that length in his 12- season career. And the Cardinals did it against righthander Carlos Zambrano, who'd had the lowest (1.73) in new Busch history for pitchers with more than 40 innings worked here. After all these highs and lows, the Cardinals, perhaps surprisingly, are where they were last year at this time. Their record after 85 games is 45-40, the same as in 2011, a season that got a lot better as it went on. Except for a misplaced offering to hot-hitting Justin Ruggiano, which ended up as a 445-foot, two-run homer in the second inning — "He got all of that one," Lohse said — the Cardinals righthander was in charge as he posted his ninth win in 11 decisions and lowered his ERA to 2.79. Including a pickoff of flat-footed Jose Reyes, Lohse set down 16 of the last 17 men to face him and didn't allow a hit after the second inning. The reliable tandem of (11 scoreless games in succession), and Jason Motte, who posted his 20th save, finished off the game and ensured the Cardinals would have at least a non-losing, 10-game home stand. "Kyle was terrific," Matheny said. "As far as a pitch-maker goes, I would say he's as good as anybody right now. He's not trying to overwhelm people with stuff as much as making pitches. "He was commanding the ball well enough to be able to get them do what he wanted them to do. That doesn't happen very often." The Cardinals, who went two for 16 with men in scoring position in a one-run loss Friday, failed on three chances in the second inning, without the ball leaving the infield. But in the fourth, after Allen Craig (single) and David Freese (walk) again gave the Cardinals runners at first and second and nobody out, they capitalized. Skip Schumaker, who has had several key hits lately, singled to left and third-base coach Jose Oquendo boldly waved home Craig ahead of a weak, off-line throw from Logan Morrison. Tony Cruz, replacing All-Star catcher Yadier Molina who is on bereavement leave, then shot a hit to right, and when Ruggiano tried to make a sliding stop on the ball near the box-seat railing, the ball eluded him and rolled into the corner. Both runners scored, the Cardinals had a 3-2 lead and Cruz had his first career triple. Schumaker, who tallied the lead run, is hitting .301 and is the fourth different player to start at second base for the Cardinals in the past five games. "It's kind of a crazy mix, what we've got going on," Matheny said. "With Skip, you know what you're going to get every day. He certainly deserves to be in there ... we've just got to do what we can each night to put the best eight on the field both defensively and offensively. Today, he did a great job for us." Schumaker said he understood the situation in which Daniel Descalso, Tyler Greene and (for one game) Matt Carpenter also have figured into the blend. "I knew going into the season that there were some younger guys that they were going to want to play," the 32-year-old said. "Descalso's done a great job over there defensively and he's going to hit eventually, so, when I'm there in, great. If not, I'll be ready in the later innings." Schumaker, who had tapped out in his first at-bat against Zambrano, also with two runners on, said he had been well aware of Zambrano's 6-0 dominance at new Busch. "I remember all those games," Schumaker said. "He's the ultimate competitor. I'm not surprised his name is at the top of that list." Counting a six-inning, one-run stint at New York, Lohse has a 2.01 earned run average for his last seven starts. He opined that this probably was the hottest game-time temperature he had encountered. "I tried to do my best to block it out," Lohse said. "The only thing you can do is get your team off the field by throwing strikes and trying to limit the damage." Agreeing with his manager, Lohse, 33, said, "I've really figured out what it takes for me to be successful. That's locating and not trying to overpower anybody." Lohse, who shook off Cruz only once, said he couldn't recall any longer stretch of seven-inning outings than his current streak. For one, there weren't any. For another, he said, "I don't recall being trusted (by managers) to be able to do that." The Cardinals were tied for first last year in the National League Central Division after 85 games. This time, they're sitting in a close third to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. "We've had a lot of individual success," Lohse said, "but we've got to figure out a way to win more games like we did today, where it's tight. We're not exactly where we want to be, but we're close." The Cardinals' one-run win was only their ninth in 23 decisions, but it was a milestone save for Motte, the first-year closer. Twenty saves at the All-Star break would seem to validate his season, but Motte, not taking that bait, replied only, "If you say so." Motte, who survived a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before finally besting pesky former Cardinals farmhand Donovan Solano, joined Jason Isringhausen, Ryan Franklin, Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith as Cardinals relievers to have 20 or more saves before the break. "It's one more than 19," Motte said. "I didn't really know it was 20, until you said it. "I just try to get guys out before they score." 816127 St Louis Cardinals Freese's career is all about persistence Joe Strauss Frame it! Friday's historic cover Thanks to the Cardinals' hyperactive and internet-savvy marketing campaign, an ever-responsive fan base and, of course, his own talent, third baseman and postseason hero David Freese last week gained 8.6 million recorded expressions of support to become the 34th and supposedly final member of the National League All-Star team. Thanks to more consistent health and improved defense, Freese has emerged as a regular-season fixture rather than a health tease whose manager distrusted him in late innings of close games. The road has never been a short or smooth one for Freese, which makes his path to 's Midsummer Classic appropriately complicated. He didn't play a game above Class A until he was within a month of his 24th birthday. His ascent likely would have taken longer if not for a stunning December 2007 trade that sent him from the to his hometown club in return for center fielder Jim Edmonds. Ankle problems will likely follow him for the rest of his life due to a single-car accident suffered shortly before 2009 . Without warning Freese's right ankle came apart rounding third base during an August rehab assignment at Springfield, leading to season-ending surgery. Freese, now 29, will always be a recovering alcoholic, a realization he faced following his Maryland Heights arrest in December 2009. Freese's career is all about persistence squared. He is a baseball Job. He idled behind Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley for two years within the Padres' minor-league system. The Lafayette High and Meramec Community College alum was good enough to hit .297 last season while producing a RBI every six at-bats. However, he saw the field enough to hit only 10 home runs with 55 RBIs. Questions about his glove, and the ready availability of Gold Glove nominee Daniel Descalso, let him play only four complete games after last Aug. 23. Now Freese approaches arbitration as a first-time All-Star and the reigning National League Championship Series and World Series Most Valuable Player. He has emerged from local boy made good to an ESPN cover boy whose visibility increased exponentially last winter. So what do the Cardinals do with him now? Freese remains "under control" of the club through 2015. But this season represents the platform that will shape his value for the next three seasons. Within the last decade the Cardinals have circumvented arbitration with pitchers Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia, ex-first baseman , Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina and Skip Schumaker. They did so by negotiating extensions that grant a player instant security in return for delaying their free agency for a year or two. To date no talks have occurred between the club and Freese's agent, Nez Balelo. By itself, the absence of negotiations does not make Freese unique. However, his medical history does. Freese has yet to play 100 games in a season. His 78 games appearances this year are second-most in his four major-league seasons. Freese retains an outside shot of reaching 300 at-bats Sunday, which would leave him only 33 shy of the career-most he set in 2011. He is already within 31 innings of equaling last season's exposure at third base. "We want him on the field as much as possible," Matheny says. "He's made some great plays. He can go to his left and right. Coming in he's surprised quite a few guys who've tried to drop a on him. We keep him in there all game and we keep throwing him out there because he's a big part of our lineup. The durability and the defense are two things that haven't been noticeable before and he's showing it now." Freese enters Sunday fourth among major league third baseman in average, fifth in on-base-plus-slugging percentage and tied for fourth in RBIs. The ' is the only NL third baseman to lead Freese in those categories. Freese is also drawing a $508,000 base salary, making him one of the game's best bargains. "I think sometimes you do ask yourself how you compare," he says. Short of the season prior to free agency, a player's platform season entering arbitration typically ranks as the most significant of his career from a financial standpoint. What he receives in his first bite of the apple compounds itself as he goes through it a second and third time. "You play baseball your whole life you want to get to the point where you can have some security," Freese said. "There's many ways to go about that. It's up to the Cardinals. They have to decide how they want to go about it." Under general managers Walt Jocketty and John Mozeliak, the Cardinals have often moved to pre-empt the process by negotiating a multi-year extension. "Every player is different," reminds Mozeliak, who traded for Freese less than two months after taking over as Cardinals general manager in October 2007. "Is he going about showing that he can be a core player? Yes, and part of that is because he's out there every day. And even at a relatively young age he's also shown a presence in the clubhouse." Freese says he is not consumed by this year's role in future earnings. "I have no problem going year to year if that's what I need to do," he said last week. "I say that because of how I feel physically. I think I'll continue to put up numbers. If that's what they want to work toward, maybe we can find a happy medium. But as far as thinking about what's next, I'm not worried about that one bit." But the statement is incomplete. At times this season, especially during a prolonged May struggle, Freese fought to maintain perspective. He admits that his May, colored by a .211 average and poor plate discipline, became the toughest on-field experience of his career. An average that stood at .333 on April 30 tumbled to .265 on May 23, briefly righted itself, then dropped to a season-low .257 on June 2. Matheny briefly benched Freese following a difficult West Coast road trip, the same trip that cost the club Lance Berkman and Kyle McClellan. A hand injury sidelined him for two games in Atlanta the same month. Usually a production machine, Freese scraped for 10 RBIs in a 31-game span that ran through June 5. "I could feel things going downhill," he said. "We weren't winning. I take that personally. Understanding how the game works, it's still hard not to feel the effects. It's tough to not be contributing the way you want while the team isn't winning ballgames, especially when you're a big part of the team." The injured Berkman was among those who counseled Freese, reminding him that a talented player's production tends to right itself over time. Berkman emphasized to Freese that if he remained healthy his numbers would follow. Others, including left fielder Matt Holliday, offered similar encouragement. Freese travels to Kansas City Sunday night as the people's choice. He will take along more than 50 RBIs, an average that again approaches .300 and an example for those who have taken a blind turn within their career. Freese says he can wait on the Cardinals. He knows he has dealt with far worse before. 816128 St Louis Cardinals Stanton to have surgery, miss All-Star activities; Marlins fall to Cardinals' Lohse again CRAIG DAVIS ST. LOUIS — Instead of putting on a show in the State Farm Home Run Derby, Giancarlo Stanton will spend his first All-Star experience recovering from knee surgery. The Marlins' young slugger will undergo arthroscopic surgery early Sunday morning to remove a loose body from his right knee. The decision was made after Stanton had to leave Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in the third inning. "He said, 'I can hit but I can't do anything else,'" manager Ozzie Guillen said. "As soon as he said that I think we had to move quickly and in a different direction." Stanton immediately left for Miami for surgery that will be performed by team Dr. Lee Kaplan. Guillen said he expected Stanton to be sidelined at least a month. Speaking Friday about the possibility of surgery, Stanton said he was told recovery could take two to eight weeks. "It's a common surgery. A lot of people have done it and come back quickly from it, so we're hopeful that will happen with Giancarlo," Marlins general manager Mike Hill said. "This is something he tried to play with and it was something we had discussed that if he couldn't play with it we'd go the surgical route." A week ago Giancarlo Stanton embraced his first All-Star selection as a dream come true. After the object was detected by an MRI on Tuesday, the Marlins made it clear he needed to be able to play this weekend in order to participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday and the All-Star Game the following night in Kansas City. Washington Nationals rookie was named to replace Stanton on the National League team. There will be no Marlins presence in Kansas City. Stanton felt fit enough to play after a 40-minute workout before Friday's game. He was tested immediately Saturday, retreating vigorously to the warning track in right field to haul in Rafael Furcal's deep drive in the first inning. He then sliced a single to right leading off the second and trotted around to score on Justin Ruggiano's two-run home run. Scott Cousins batted for Stanton in the third. "You feel bad because it's his first time at the All-Star Game, but he'll be back. He's a competitor, he'll be all right," teammate Brett Hayes said. Saturday's loss left the Marlins 4 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. They expect to get Emilio Bonifacio back from thumb surgery as soon as Friday. "It's a big bat. This is our power hitter, our RBI guy," Guillen said of the void left by Stanton. "I guess we've got to change the way we play. Boni is not Stanton, but we can play a different ballgame. I think everybody out there has got to step it up a notch." The Marlins were beaten Saturday for the third time this season by Kyle Lohse, who has held them to two or fewer runs while going at least seven innings each time. He limited them to three hits in seven this time, allowing only one walk after the third. Like Ricky Nolasco the night before, Carlos Zambrano found himself in frequent trouble. Unlike Nolasco, who escaped jam after jam to defeat the Cardinals, trouble caught up to Zambrano in the fourth. The Cardinals wiped out a 2-0 Marlins lead with three runs on an RBI-single by Skip Schumaker and a two-run triple by backup catcher Tony Cruz, who slapped a fastball into the right-field corner. Cruz was playing because Marlins nemesis Yadier Molina is on bereavement leave in Puerto Rico. Zambrano kept the deficit at one by escaping a bases-loaded predicament in the fifth with a couple of strikeouts before exiting. The 106-degree weather made it the hottest game the Marlins have ever played, topping the 103-degree inferno on Friday. They have played four consecutive games in triple-digit heat, also a team record. No Marlin is hotter than Ruggiano, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer in the second inning. Ruggiano sent a 1-0 sinker from Lohse 445-feet to left for his sixth homer. The Marlins threatened against reliver Mitchell Boggs in the eighth, when Greg Dobbs doubled and reached third on a groundout, but Hanley Ramirez ended the inning with a grounder to short. Ramirez was hitless in four at-bats Saturday and is 2 for 20 on the trip. Belleville News-Democrat LOADED: 07.08.2012

816129 St Louis Cardinals Miami Marlins (41-42) at St. Louis Cardinals (44-40), 4:10 p.m. (ET) Staff Writer Kyle Lohse may not be one of St. Louis' five selected All- Stars this season, but he has been arguably the Cardinals most consistent pitcher. Lohse looks for a third straight winning start this evening in the second contest of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The right-hander has pitched at least seven innings in five straight starts, going 3-1 in that span with a 1.98 earned run average. He improved to 4-2 with a 4.60 ERA in eight career meetings with the Marlins with a victory over them on June 26, tossing 7 1/3 innings of two-run, four-hit ball. Lohse beat the Rockies on Monday with a similar outing, scattering two runs, nine hits and a pair of walks over 7 1/3 frames. The 33-year-old improved to 8-2 with a 2.80 ERA in 17 starts this season. "He just pitched. He did a little bit of everything, but most of it is just his efficiency, staying down and getting the ground balls when he needed to," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said about Lohse. Carlos Zambrano has been the opposite of consistent for the Marlins and seeks his first victory in six starts. He is 0-3 over his previous five outings, with the Marlins losing each game. The right-hander has issued 22 walks over 22 innings of his winless slide and gave up five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and five walks over 6 2/3 frames of a loss to the Cardinals and Lohse on June 26. He fell to 12-7 in his career against St. Louis with a 3.47 ERA. Zambrano, 32, struggled again in a no-decision at the Brewers on Monday. He was charged with five runs -- three earned -- on five hits and four walks in a game that saw Miami charged with three errors. "It was a pretty ugly one," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Carlos was a little weird today, but I wouldn't say he was bad. We made too many mistakes today to win." In 16 starts this season, Zambrano is 4-6 with a 4.14 ERA. It was the Cardinals who were undone by some poor defense in Friday's opener, getting charged with three errors on the way to a 3-2 defeat. Ricky Nolasco allowed one unearned run over six innings for Miami, scattering nine hits and a walk. Mike Dunn and combined to keep the Cardinals scoreless after the sixth and worked around some trouble in the ninth to record his 19th save of the season. Logan Morrison crushed a solo home run and Jose Reyes added an RBI single as the Marlins won their third straight game and seventh in the past nine tries. "We're feeling good about ourselves. Even in the games we've lost we've been real close, so it's a good sign going into the break," said Nolasco. "We've got two more and then, hopefully, it keeps carrying over." One good sign for the Marlins was All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton coming on as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. He had missed the last three games with a sore right knee. Jake Westbrook absorbed the loss after giving up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings. The Cardinals suffered just their second in their last six games. "We had them early, we just came up short," said Matheny. "That was a tough loss." St. Louis placed All-Star catcher Yadier Molina on the bereavement list on Friday and won't play in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic. He was replaced on the roster by teammate Matt Holliday. The Marlins have lost three of five contests to St. Louis this season and eight of the past 10 meetings between the clubs. Belleville News-Democrat LOADED: 07.08.2012
