Davison, Downs Man The Middle • Raymond Davison III and Devante Downs will look to fill the two starting inside linebackers spots in defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 base defense after both started all 12 games in 2016. After leading Cal in tackles with 84 last season, Downs is also now the team’s active career leader with 147 stops. Davison was third on the team with 69 tackles in 2016 and has totaled 111 stop in his career to rank second on the club. Game Captains • Cal’s game captains for Saturday’s season opener are placekicker Matt Anderson, defensive end James Looney and wide receiver Kanawai Noa. All three players wear No. 9. In The Booth • Joe Starkey, the legendary voice of the Golden Bears, is in his 43rd season with the Cal football broadcast team in 2017 and has been on the air for 485 of the team’s 491 contests since beginning his tenure at Cal in 1975. • In 2010, Starkey received the Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation for his distinguished career broadcasting college football. • In 2016, the Cal radio broadcast booth was named The Joe Starkey Broadcast Booth. • He is joined in the booth by analyst and former Cal quarterback Mike Pawlawski, who will be in his sixth season and second stint as part of the Cal football broadcast team in 2017. • Pawlawski led Cal to back to-back bowl victories as the Bears’ starting quarterback in 1990 and 1991, and was the Pac-10’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year as a 1991 senior. • In his 13th season on the broadcast team in 2017 is sideline reporter Todd McKim, who has also serve as host of the Inside The Locker Room weekly podcast and is the play-by-play voice for the Cal men’s basketball radio broadcasts. Before joining Cal, McKim was a longtime television anchor and sports director in Eugene, and was the 2000 Oregon broadcaster of the year.
