Both governments were seeking a way to establish closer relations but the circumstances prevented them from traditional dip- lomatic contacts. Sports exchange proved to be a convenient solution. In the paper the Author attempts to verify a hypothesis on a subsequent legacy of the ping-pong diplomacy in American foreign policy. The study allowed to determine reasons for the need to employ sport in order to establish closer rela- tions between two hostile actors of international relations. It is an attempt to answer a question concerning the intentional or coincidental character of the analysed sports exchange. The paper is an empirical case study on one of the prime examples of positive sports diplomacy and was conducted with the use of decision-making. Keywords: ping-pong diplomacy; sports diplomacy; China-USA relations; interna- tional relations; politics and sport Introduction The aim of the paper is to investigate the ping-pong diplomacy between the Unites States and China, one of the best known cases of sports diplomacy, within which a sports exchange in table-tennis between national teams of both countries was es- 1 The project has been financed by National Science Centre (Poland), grant no.

Presented at the Electronic Media Group Session, AIC 40th Annual Meeting, May 8–11, 2012, Albuquerque, NM. FADING OUT: THE END OF 35 MM SLIDE TRANSPARENCIES TINA WEIDNER ABSTRACT This paper refects on the challenges facing conservators dealing with the preserva- tion and display of slide-based works in fne art collections following the discon- tinuation of the last remaining slide duplicating stock, Kodak Edupe, in March 2010, and the imminent demise of this analog technology. This paper explores the strategies currently available to conservators and the rapidly decreasing timeframe in which action will need to be taken. INTRODUCTION There are moments in the history of conservation when objects are radically al- tered in order to preserve what was most valued at that time. For example painted surfaces from panel paintings have in the past been stripped from their wooden support and re-adhered to canvas. The arguments justifying these decisions un- doubtedly appeared compelling at the time, only to become highly controversial centuries later. • China's International Identity Trilemma
Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi Dergisi 21/1 (2019) 83-102 e-ISSN 2667-405X China’s International Identity Trilemma: Developing Country, Regional Power or Great Power? Nilgün ELİKÜÇÜK YILDIRIM* Geliş Tarihi (Received): 21.03.2019 – Kabul Tarihi (Accepted): 24.04.2019 Abstract China has adopted many different identities concurrently, rather than a fixed country identity in its foreign policy. China still uses the identity of being a developing country in its relations with the third world, while playing the role of being a regional power in its periphery. On the other hand, it assumes the principle of international responsibility that is attributed to the Great Powers in the international arena. In this context, there is no certainty whether China is a developing country, a regional power or a global power. China's simultaneous possession of multiple identities in foreign policy is the result of the adoption of one or more of the global identities discussed by the International Relations Academy. The focus of the International identity debate is the principle of “never take lead”, (juebu dangtou), which is one of the cornerstones of keeping low profile strategy. In this study, I will discuss the international identity debate in the Chinese Academy in three categories: developing country, regional power and great power. The main argument of the study is that the identity discussions at the Academy are effective in shaping Xi Jinping's “strive for achievement” strategy. These discussions are also very useful to observe which political geography China would like to create an impact on.
