ISBN 99916/30/10/4 49 AN ASSESSMENf OF FOOD SECURITY IN SOUTH AFRICA G K Coetzee and J van Zyl INTRODUCTION The economic disparity between white and black South Africa is most clearly observable in the agricultural sector (FI!nyes et al., 1988). The commercial farming sector is dominated by whites as regards ownership, while the subsistence sector consists mainly of black families on traditional communal holdings. Some authors refer to this phenomenon as a dual economic system, consisting of both first and third world economies (Groenewald, 1987). However, the South African economy (including agriculture) functions as an integrated system within a relatively small common market (Van Zyl & Groenewald, 1988). The existing distribution of access to resources, inputs and markets in agriculture between races is highly inequitable due to a number of barriers of a physical and institutional nature (Fen yes et al., 1988). -

Abstract This study investigated the consumption of ed ible insects in Nxaraga, Sehithwa and Shorobe villages of the North West district of Botswana. Information was gathered using a structured questionnaire which was administered to 60 respondents across the three villages and also through direct observation. A total of six insect species were identified belonging to six families and four orders (i.e., Coleoptera, Isoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera) with t he two most consumed orders being Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. Carebara vidua F. Smith (33.3%) was the most consumed followed by Sternocera orissa Buq. (21.7%), Agrius convolvuli L. (15.0%), Oryctes boas Fabr.(13.3%), Imbrasia belina Westwood (10.0%) and Lo custa migratoria (6.7%). The study revealed that insects were abundant during and/or immediately after the rainy season. This implies that insects can be harvested and preserved during the time of abundan ce to maximize their utilization in meeting the human protein needs. The common methods of collecting insects were hand picking, trapping and digging. Insects were prepared for consumption by boiling, frying or roasting. -

Received 3 September, 2017; Accepted 28 November, 2017 In order to assess the contribution of edible insects to the efforts for combatting food insecurity and poverty in Côte d’Ivoire, a survey aimed at identifying edible insects in Côte d’Ivoire was conducted from August 2014 to August 2015 in three communes in the city of Abidjan (Abobo, Adjamé and Yopougon). Four hundred and seventy-two people were interviewed at random. The results revealed that 59.72% of the respondents consume insects against 40.27% who do not consume them. This study has helped to identify nine edible insect species belonging to eight families and five orders. The species Imbrasia oyemensis (Lepidoptera, Satunidae) and Macrotermes subhylinus (Isoptera, Macrotermitidae) are widely consumed due to their availability in markets. The species Rhyncophorus phoenicis (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) or palm tree caterpillar is one of the most prized by 40% of the surveyed population. The statistical analyses applied to the 365 people surveyed revealed that insect consumption is a function of the cultural area (X²=76.7; ddl= 4, p < 0.05) and the age ((X²=54.88, ddl=3; p < 0.05) of the consumers. -

In contrast to tropical countries, where most of the 2000 edible insect species are traditionally consumed, the concept of eating insects is still new to Western culture and diet. Culture and eating habits exert a great influence on what is considered edible in the Mediterranean area, especially in Italy, where the preservation of culinary traditions is a predominant factor affecting dietary behaviour. The purpose of this narrative paper is to provide an overview of the main topics related to entomophagy. -

Chapter 15. Central and Eastern Africa: Overview
Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent. -

INTRODUCTION The utilization of insects as a sustainable and secure source of animal-based food for the human diet has continued to increase in popularity in recent years (Ash et al., 2010; Crabbe, 2012; Dossey, 2013; Dzamba, 2010; FAO, 2008; Gahukar, 2011; Katayama et al., 2008; Nonaka, 2009; Premalatha et al., 2011; Ramos- Elorduy, 2009; Smith, 2012; Srivastava et al., 2009; van Huis, 2013; van Huis et al., 2013; Vantomme et al., 2012; Vogel, 2010; Yen, 2009a, b). Throughout the world, a large portion of the human population consumes insects as a regular part of their diet (Fig. 18.1). Thousands of edible species have been identified (Bukkens, 1997; Bukkens and Paoletti, 2005; DeFoliart, 1999; Ramos-Elorduy, 2009). However, in regions of the world where Western cultures dominate, such as North America and Europe, and in developing countries heavily influenced by Western culture, mass media have negatively influenced the public’s percep- tion of insects by creating or reinforcing fears and phobias (Kellert, 1993; Looy and Wood, 2006). Nonetheless, the potentially substantial benefits of farming and utilizing insects as a primary dietary component, particularly to supplement or replace foods and food ingredients made from vertebrate livestock, are gain- ing increased attention even in Europe and the United States.
