“It’s gold!” What began as a whispered discovery between two packers traveling through the Oregon Territory soon became a cry heard throughout the West. The year was 1851, and within months, thousands of miners were lining the creeks of Rich Gulch off Daisy Creek, seeking their fortune. The rush was on, and the boomtown, which came to be known as Jacksonville, emerged. Unlike many communities of its day, it did not become a ghost town when the gold ran out. Instead, it became one of the best known trade centers in the West. For decades Jacksonville, which had become the county seat, flourished as the commercial and cultural center of Southern Oregon.

With the advent of the railroad, and because of the location, Jacksonville was bypassed, and Medford was born in 1886. A privately owned spur ran to Jacksonville until 1927 when the county seat was moved to Medford, and there was little reason to come here.

During the Great Depression, Jacksonville residents survived by digging tunnels under the town and mining the gold that was still there.

The town survived as the world passed her by until the 1960s when U.S. Bank came in and restored the old U.S. Hotel, Museum and Courthouse, to their original glory. Jacksonville has long been hailed as one of the most historically significant communities in the Western United States. The town boasts over 100 original brick and wooden buildings that date back to the early 1850s. Many landmarks were restored to their original appearance.

Today, the United States Government has declared the entire town of Jacksonville a National Historic District. Since then, the town has been thriving from tourism and history seekers. On the following pages you will find our recommendations for must-see historic sites of Jacksonville, Oregon.

A visit with us is like a step back in time.

J. W. McCully Building Built in the 1850s, the upstairs was used as a Jewish Synagogue and the downstairs as a general merchandise store. In the 1960s the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 10 took possession of the property. Located at the corner of Oregon Street and Main Street.

Jackson County Courthouse and Jail Built in 1883, the buildings were built of brick and stone. The courthouse served as the county seat for 43 years. The courthouse and jail currently house a museum, which combines a hands-on children section in the jail, complete with model railroads and old kitchens to explore. The courthouse and jail is located on 5th Street between C and D Streets.

Dr. J.W. McCully House Dr. McCully moved to Jacksonville in 1852. He and his family lived in the house until 1944. Mrs. McCully also hosted a children’s school in the house, since there were no public schools in the area. The building is currently part of Country House Inns and houses guest rooms for visitors and a wine tasting room. Located at the corner of California and 5th Streets.

The Britt Gardens Peter Britt, a Swiss native, is best known for his photographs of Crater Lake. It was because of these photographs that the U.S. Government decided to declare Crater Lake a National Park. The photographs can be seen at the Jackson County Museum. Britt was also an avid horticulturist. His extensive gardens were the site of the first Peter Britt Music Festival and are still kept in perfect condition for all to enjoy. Located at 1st and Pine Streets.

The Jacksonville Cemetery The 30- acre cemetery not only features some of the most spectacular views of Jacksonville, but also dates back to1860. Some of the graves are of the Red Men and Odd Fellows. The cemetery is open seven days a week from 8am to one half hour after dusk. The entrance to the Cemetery is located at the intersection of Oregon Street and E Street.

A portion of the ground floor serves as a historically recreated branch of a U.S. Bank of Oregon. The hotel is located on California Street and 3rd Street.

Redmen’s Hall The Improved Order of Redmen, Pocahontas No. 1, was established in 1870. The Order of Redmen were an extremely influential civic organization of the 1880s.
