Notes for RICHARD MAYNE: Immigrated to America with brother See Robert Mark Mayne (15) No Children -Death of Richard Mayne- Obt Local paper --Last Friday evening death came to the relief of Mr. Richard Mayne, after an illness of several days. A year or so ago he was ill for a number of months eigh unto death and while apparently recovered from the siege he has been in very poor health and his constitution could not long withstand the last attack Mr. Mayne was born in Devonshire Eng., Sept. 29 1828, and lacked but a month and a half of being 69 years of age. He came to America in 1854 and remained three months in New York state. The same year he came to Peoria County, Ill. where he lived about three years and in 1857 came to this township where he has since resided. He was married to Miss. Charlotte Scott in 1870, by Rev. John Borland, one of the pioneer preachers of the Methodist church in this part of the state. Mr. Mayne identified himself with the M. E. church in January 1871, under the ministry of Rev. Reger, who was conducting services in Bethel School house. He lived a thoroughly Christian life. Besides his wife, deceased leaves one brother Robert of this township, and two sisters in England. The funeral was held Sunday in the M. E. church this city, Rev. De laGardie delivering the sermon. The following friends of the deceased were pall bearers: Messieurs Adam Pfleeger, Smith Dixon. G.H. Westcott, Robt. Hitch, Ed Hitch, and H.G. McCord ---o--- Obit; from El Paso newspaper I have a copy of Richard Mayne's Will: found in Woodford Co Court House Eureka, Woodford Co. Ill. Signed October 21 1896 Lists relatives in England that were contacted by the Court; Phillip Mayne, WM Mayne, Elizabeth Pike, and Mary Saxton. Executor {brother} Robert Mayne Witnesses: Ed I. Eugel, Ed B. Whitmier In the 1870 census Richard appears to be living with Robert and his family. Age appears to be 54 where I would expect 42. Notes for CHARLOTTE SCOTT: Copied from the El Paso Journal Issue: last week of Oct. 1930 MRS. MAYNE. Death of Aged Pioneer Lady Occurs Last Friday -Morning. ---Charlotte Scott was born in Scotland April 24 1842. and passed to the other shore last Friday at 9 o’clock from ailments incidental to advanced years. The first twenty seven years of her life was spent in her native land and though she had resided in America for nearly half a century her heart grew warm with the memories of the “land of the bluebell and Heather.” In 1869 Miss. Scott came to this city to make her home with her sister Mrs. John Steinbach and family, but the next year she was married to Richard Mayne who took his bride to the farm where he later died in 1899, and which Mrs. Mayne still owned until the present. After the death of Mr. Mayne the widow purchased the old John Stock brick residence, remaining there all these years. She was a typical Scott lady, an ardent Christian woman, quaint and most interesting in her speech and habits. Her only surviving blood relatives are a niece and three nephews, Mrs. Harry Kreidier of McAllen, Tex. Louis Steinbach of Nebraska, Charles Steinbach of Chicago, and William Steinbach of new York city. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church last Saturday after noon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. S. S. Cryer in charge. Interment was in the city Cemetery. From El Paso, Ill. news paper I have a Copy of Charlotte Scott Mayne's will Comment: Both Charlotte and her unmarried sister, are buried in the old Mayne plot in Evergreen Cemetery one half mile east of El Paso Ill.. The head stone of Charlotte Scott Mayne is unique in the area as it is of red granite. Next to Charlotte’s grave is a grave with a headstone of the same red granite, inscribed: My Sister, Ellen Scott Aug. 25 1835-Feb. 10 1902. Across the drive and in the center of an old part of the cemetery are stones of the same red granite listing other individuals family name: Scott. Due to the uniqueness of the stone it may be reasonable to say they are related, (i.e. brother). The inscriptions on this stone(s) are: Father; Thomas Scott Nov., 7, 1830- Jan. 9, 1903; Mother: Keziah Clark “his wife” Oct. 23 1831-April 26 1894; Oliver C. ; Nov. 11, 1867- Oct. 15, 1902. listed in 1880 census location, Panola township Reported by Richard F. • Northern Devon in the Domesday Book
NORTHERN DEVON IN THE DOMESDAY BOOK INTRODUCTION The existence of the Domesday Book has been a source of national pride since the first antiquarians started to write about it perhaps four hundred years ago. However, it was not really studied until the late nineteenth century when the legal historian, F W Maitland, showed how one could begin to understand English society at around the time of the Norman Conquest through a close reading and analysis of the Domesday Book (Maitland 1897, 1987). The Victoria County Histories from the early part of the twentieth century took on the task of county-wide analysis, although the series as a whole ran out of momentum long before many counties, Devon included, had been covered. Systematic analysis of the data within the Domesday Book was undertaken by H C Darby of University College London and Cambridge University, assisted by a research team during the 1950s and 1960s. Darby(1953), in a classic paper on the methodology of historical geography, suggested that two great fixed dates for English rural history were 1086, with Domesday Book, and circa 1840, when there was one of the first more comprehensive censuses and the detailed listings of land-use and land ownership in the Tithe Survey of 1836-1846. The anniversary of Domesday Book in 1986 saw a further flurry of research into what Domesday Book really was, what it meant at the time and how it was produced. It might be a slight over-statement but in the early-1980s there was a clear consensus about Domesday Book and its purpose but since then questions have been raised and although signs of a new shared understanding can be again be seen, it seems unlikely that Domesday Book will ever again be taken as self-evident.

Ashwater Newsletter 1 January 2019 PARISH HALL Happy New Year to all with thanks to everyone that made use of the hall during 2018. The coming year sees the 10th anniversary of taking control of the building from the contractors and it has become a fixed and valuable community asset, meeting and in many cases exceeding, the vision of those that around 20 years ago sat down and decided to embark on an ambitious project and replace the existing facilities. Comment: A healthy, happy New Year to all and many One of the aims was to erect a hall that was ‘future proof’ and congratulations to our ‘award winning shop’. another to ensure it was as environmentally friendly as possible with running costs as low as practical thus keeping hire charges reasonable without the need for regular fund-raising events to pay the bills. Newsletter: Contributions for the next Newsletter by 24th January please to [email protected] By and large these aims have been met, with the notable exception of adequate storage facilities and that is why after nearly 10 years of Events in the hall (unless otherwise stated) successful operation, money is still being raised to improve the facilities and create more space. 3rd January– Pub Lunch, Village Inn 12.30pm Is anyone interested in becoming a hall committee member? We are 9th January – Parish Council Meeting, 7.30pm now embarking on an extra push to raise the rest of the money 10th January – Ladies Skittles, 7.30pm needed to start work on the hall extension and help in arranging events, either tried and trusted ones or new ventures that enhance 11th January, knitting at the coffee morning, 10.00am community involvement at the same time, would be appreciated.
