Having seen Woolmer in action during World Cup ’99, the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) officials sacked Gordon Abacus Greenidge (he was not willing to use computers) and decided to appoint someone as charismatic as Woolmer for coaching Bangladesh cricket team. So, Eddie Barlow was appointed as the new coach. They say that he is no less than Bob Woolmer with his computer. Then why don’t you ever see him with his laptop? That is because he doesn’t have one! Actually, he has a desktop PC, and he loves his computer so much that people call him Eddie Desktop Barlow. Now, to select Bangladesh national team for the next World Cup, Barlow has asked BCB to call a number of players to BKSP camp, so that he can minutely observe them before selection. Accordingly, BCB invites around 100 players to join BKSP camp. Barlow’s strategy for selecting the best team is as follows. Thomas' Cricket Match, is played over 3 days in the month of March in the city of Colombo. S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, a private Anglican school has about 2,500 boys on roll, while Royal college Colombo, a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 8,000, making it the largest school in the country. Origins of School Cricket in Ceylon The early origins of S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia date ba ck to 1851 when it was located in Mutwal, Colombo. It is the first Ceylonese school to play cricket - beginning 1864 against the Small Pass Cricket Club in Colombo. This is also the first recorded instance of a cricket match between two Ceylonese teams pla yed in Ceylon. S. Thomas' was represented in this historic match by G. A. Edward, W. De. Livera, K. Banda, S. H. Pereira, L. Sepion, B. A. Senanayake, C. de Silva, L. T. Nolan, E. de Hoedt, H. M. Fernando and A. Perera. As there was no other school playin g cricket at the time, from 1864 to 1877, S. Thomas' played against the clubs and other teams that were in existence in Colombo, Negombo and Kalutara, including the elitist European dominated Colombo Cricket Club.

In this thesis, the validity of dualist positions on sport expertise is evaluated. It is argued that, to advance understanding of expertise and talent development, a shift towards a multidisciplinary and integrative science focus is necessary, along with the development of a comprehensive multidisciplinary theoretical rationale. Dynamical systems theory is utilised as a multidisciplinary theoretical rationale for the succession of studies, capturing how multiple interacting constraints can shape the development of expert performers. Phase I of the research examines experiential knowledge of coaches and players on the development of fast bowling talent utilising qualitative research methodology. It provides insights into the developmental histories of expert fast bowlers, as well as coaching philosophies on the constraints of fast bowling expertise. Results suggest talent development programmes should eschew the notion of common optimal performance models and emphasize the individual nature of pathways to expertise. Coaching and talent development programmes should identify the range of interacting constraints that impinge on the performance potential of individual athletes, rather than evaluating current performance on physical tests referenced to group norms.
