ClassicBy EbonyI had been hearing about this story for sometime--and now I see why it is considered one of the classics for the 8th Dr. It starts out confusingly funny, but by Chapter 3, the fun is gone, the truth starts to show and it becomes a very tense chiller--very fast.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Rightly Beloved Audio DramaBy Adam GrahamThe Chimes of Midnight is rightfully regarded as classic. and Charley land in an Edwardian estate on Christmas Eve and at first are totally invisible to the inhabitants of the house, a bunch of servants who are caught in a time loop of death and unpleasantness. It all begins when the Scullery Maid dies and then the cook. Starting in Episode 2, the Doctor and Charley find themselves cast in the roles of amateur sleuths with the Doctor discovering this is a time loop. For the first two parts plus, the play was alternatively darkly comic and scary. The darkly comic parts came as the servants (who were bound up in the class system of the Edwardian era) were almost comically stereotypical. However, the story works in frightening moments such as when time speeds forward, most notably the cliffhanger at the end of Episode 2.Episode 4 is something different. We get the Doctor at his lowest point of despair as he realizes they're trapped in the loop. ("We'll live for two hours or we'll live forever, however you'd like it.") And we get the most emotional part of the episode as Charley comes face to face with the cause for the paradox. It's a bit far fetched as time travel goes but for an emotional payoff, it's powerful, and a great scene. This is deservedly one of the best-loved Doctor Who Audio Dramas by Big Finish, and certainly a high point for this Doctor with a story that really surprises and really is worth all that hype. Charley Pollard is used more effective in this story than in any since Storm Warning. In previous stories, she'd been captured with attempts to marry her off. Here India gets a chance to really act as Charley plays a great part in the story. The Result in golden.

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house not a creature was stirring.... But something must be stirring. Something hidden in the shadows. Something which kills the servants of an old Edwardian mansion in the most brutal and macabre manner possible. Exactly on the chiming of the hour, every hour, as the grandfather clock ticks on towards midnight. Trapped and afraid, the Doctor and Charley are forced to play detective to murders with no motive, where even the victims don't stay dead. Time is running out. And time itself might well be the killer.... Written by: Robert Shearman. Directed by: Barnaby Edwards.
