She was then second to Donna Volce in the Grade 3 Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita on March 8, second to the Bob Baffert-trained and future Grade 1 Longines Acorn-winner Gamine in a $100,000 optional claiming at Oaklawn on May 2 and second to Swiss Skydiver in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks on June 6. Two races later at Keeneland Saturday, Swiss Skydiver would finish second to Art Collector as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. Despite the credentials however, Speech was the 4-1 third choice in the Ashand behind 3-5 favorite and Grade 3 Las Virgines Stakes-winner Venetian Harbor, who was also second to Swiss Skydiver in her last start which came in the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn on May 1. Fair Grounds Oaks (G2)-winner Bonny South was the second choice in the wagering at 7-2 for trainer Brad Cox. As expected, Venetian Harbor and jockey Joel Rosario went right to the front from post three in the $400,000 Ashland as Speech and Javier Castellano took up position in second to her out- side as they went around the club- house turn. Venetian Harbor shook free to a clear lead over Speech in second down the back- stretch and through Florida-bred Speech/COADY PHOTO fractions of :24.04 for the first quarter-mile and the half :47.14 followed by a close up Envoutante in third. Venetian Harbor took them into the far turn but Speech ranged up to her outside at the three-eighths marker and those two locked up at the top of the stretch after six furlongs in 1:10.44. But Speech took over inside the final furlong and went on to win by three lengths in 1:41.26. That eclipsed the track record of 1:41.36 set by Seeking the Soul in an Oct. 21, 2017 optional claiming race. “Very happy,” McCarthy said. “We had our mind set on run- ning in the [Grade 3] Beaumont Stakes [Friday at Keeneland] for the last five weeks or so and the last minute, we kind of called an audible and sometimes these things work out. To come back today and think we would set a track record in a race we weren’t espe- cially pointing to says something about Speech. She trained well. She shows up every time. I call her the ultimate overachiever.” It was the first stakes victory at Keeneland for McCarthy. Castellano said the pace of the race set up very nicely for Speech. “I just wanted to keep track of the right time, the right place to win the race,” Castellano said. “Today it was easier to keep track of the speed.
