  • Seven Unveils Content Plans for 2019
SEVEN UNVEILS CONTENT PLANS FOR 2019 Slate includes new Bevan Lee drama and two supersized reality hits Geraldine Hakewill, Joel Jackson and Catherine McClements headline Miss Fisher spin-off MKR’s 10th anniversary season to launch the year “Top Gear meets food” in new Gordon Ramsay series New overseas dramas feature screen heavyweights Martin Clunes, Sheridan Smith, Kelsey Grammer and more (Sydney, Friday October 26): The Seven Network today unveiled its content plans for 2019. Four new local dramas, including the next offering from creator Bevan Lee; two supersized reality hits; a female spinoff to one of the year’s most heart-warming hits and the landmark 10th season of one of Australia’s biggest shows are just some of the programs set to take Seven into its 13th consecutive year of leadership. Commenting, Seven’s Director of Network Programming Angus Ross said: “After a close win last year, we promised to up our game in 2018, and the team has delivered in spades. We’ve broken records and dominated the ratings throughout the year. In fact, in every month we have never dropped below a 39% share, while our competitors have never been above 39%. Our worst is still better than their best. “What’s particularly pleasing is that this success is down to the strength and depth of our programming across the board. From 6am to midnight, we have the strongest spine of ratings winners, bar none. And with the AFL and Cricket locked up until 2022, Seven can guarantee those mass audiences, and certainty for our advertisers, for years to come.” NEW TO SEVEN IN 2019 BETWEEN TWO WORLDS From Australia’s most prolific creator/writer Bevan Lee (Packed to the Rafters, A Place To Call Home, All Saints, Winners & Losers, Always Greener) comes an intense, high concept contemporary drama series about two disparate and disconnected worlds, thrown together by death and a sacrifice in one and the chance for new life in the other.

  • The Queer Economy of Rupaul's Drag Race by Ted
MOTHER OF THE HOUSE OF NO SHAME: THE QUEER ECONOMY OF RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE BY TED FAUST DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications & Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor James Hay, Chair Professor CL Cole Associate Professor Richard T. Rodriguez, UC Riverside Assistant Professor Amanda Ciafone i ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I consider the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race and the vast web of digital and broadcast media productions it has spawned, as a means to explore the changing cultural, technological, and economic conditions that have allowed for the emergence of a widespread queer media economy in which it is currently positioned as a central touchstone and engine of production and productivity. I seek to understand the history and evolution of the changing economics and production practices of the reality television genre that led to the emergence of (and have been deployed, tweaked, and recirculated by) the semi-satirical Drag Race; to better understand its position, as a “broadcast” cable television show, in a wider network of “new” and “spreadable” social media enterprises flowing into and out of it; to analyze the artistic, aesthetic, ethical and ascetic technologies of the self practiced by the contestants on the show, alongside a genealogical account of their origins in queer spaces and subcultures; and to explore the show’s position in a wider television landscape, asking how it is related to other programs of the current conjuncture, its technologization and commodification of a queer mode of belonging, and its relationships to virtual and material queer spaces as a globalized cultural technology.

  • Submission in Response to “Supporting Australian Stories on Our Screens” Options Paper
Submission in response to “Supporting Australian stories on our Screens” Options Paper 30 June 2020 Executive Summary ANZSA appreciates the opportunity to respond to the Options Paper “Supporting Australian stories on our Screens”. Our members are active participants in the Australian screen industry, from the creation of content; to investing in production companies, physical infrastructure and post-production services, to the distribution of content into Australian cinemas, home entertainment retail, licencing to free-to-air and Pay TV providers as well as operating direct to consumer SVOD businesses. Our members have contributed to the Australian screen industry for nearly 100 years. ANZSA supports the notion that those who benefit from the industry should contribute to its development. The screen industry sector’s contribution to Australia’s GDP has increased by 15% between 2012-13 and 2017- 18, with Production and Home Entertainment the best performing sectors. Expert international screen consultancy Olsberg SPI notes that this growth is evidence of the sector’s ‘quick and efficient response to the disruption caused by the internet’. The performance of the production sector specifically is noteworthy (+31% in GVA) given that it was achieved without a significant contribution from footloose production. How much bigger the opportunity is becomes clearer when looking at the prior year (FY16/17) which would have seen GVA contribution of the production sector grow by 113.8% - more than four times faster. Automatic production incentives are in place in 97 countries, states and provinces worldwide. These incentives are seen to create and support jobs less likely to be negatively affected by machine learning and automation, and – apart from direct economic and employment benefits – help build a country’s brand, which supports tourism activity and soft power generally.
