Cork. ii AUTHORS NOTE & ACKNOWLEDGEMENT When the Cork Constitution Club celebrated the centenary of its foundation I had the privilege of writing the history. Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book.

BELFAST: 1989 it FOREWORD One does not proceed very far into the research on Collegians Rugby Football Club without realising the depth and the degree to which Collegians owes its survival and existence to the generosity and benevolence of Charles Seaver Neill. Collegians is synomonous with Charlie Neill. Appropriately, the present pavilion at Deramore Park is a tangible memorial to him. It was my privilege to have known him and to have played rugby at Collegians when he was very much the dominating personality. When you met him you saw either the obvious gentleman with old world charm and courtesy or a man with commanding presence, he was over six feet tall and straight in stature, forbidding, even autocratic, but whichever mood he was in you may be sure that underneath his exterior was a most sympathetic and understanding nature. In conversation when he was invariably extolling the virtues of Collegians, he spoke with a distinct, pulsating and passionate voice. Charlie Neill was the great Collegian. I wish to thank many people and sources from which I have had assistance in the compilation of this work. My first acknowledgement must be made to the Belfast Newsletter, the Belfast Telegraph, the Ireland's Saturday Night, the Northern Whig, the Linenhall Library and the Central Library for permission to use their files for reports and results of matches. A warm welcome to all our visitors to Temple Hill for today’s Ulster Bank League game with Young Munster RFC. We extend a special welcome to Young Munster Presi- Itinerary for the Day dent, Nay Cantillon, his committee, players and supporters. 1pm: Club Blitz U7’s U8’s U9’s U10’s Young Munster currently lead Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League having won five of their six games to date. Most recently they defeated Lansdowne last weekend on a 1pm: Match day Christmas Lunch with guest speaker 15-13 score line. They have 22 points, one ahead of Clontarf in second place. For their part, Cork Constitution have won their last two outings against Clontarf and Black- Please contact John O’Mahony or Fiona Burke if you wish to attend the rock College and are in third place with 18 points, level with St Mary’s College. The new stadium will provide an international arena worthy of this past and ready to play host to an exciting future. A transparent roof is lowered to the southern sky to maximise the sunlight for the high performance sports turf thus ensuring that the best possible playing surface is produced. All seating in the new stadium will be under cover of a roof; however, the roof will not extend over the pitch. The North stand will comprise one low level seating tier, to reflect its proximity to the residential properties at that end of the ground. Construction is scheduled to finish by the end of 2009. She became the second goalkeeper from Larne to line out for Ireland after Anne Laing who was the number one between 1961 and 1974. McFerran took up the game aged seven and was still a pupil at Larne Grammar School when she made her senior debut for Ireland. In addition to playing field hockey, in her youth McFerran was an Irish dancer and played the flute. Randalstown was her club side when she made her senior debut before switching to Pegasus for one season, winning the Irish Hockey League in 2015. She was also named as the league's best goalkeeper.

Led by Sean Barlow and the late Sean Lyons the United Sports Panel was formed. They felt the time was right to have an Award Scheme in the county to honour amateur sports stars in their chosen sports annually. In fact, one should note that these were the first such awards in the country. As well as honouring Tipperary’s outstanding amateur sportspersons the United Sports Panel had another aim, as expressed by the second chairman, the late Tom Halpin, when he presented the awards in 1964. He expressed the hope ‘that functions such as these, which brought the stars of various sports together, would help to promote unity in sport.’ Like all innovations, it was not without its teething problems. Finding ways to finance it and getting venues were just two of them. In the early days businesses in Clonmel were canvassed to sponsor the trophies. This problem was eliminated for the 1964 awards when Messrs Showerings Ltd.
