Directions to Middle Aston > Middle Aston House | Middle Aston | Oxfordshire | OX25 5PT By Road From the North Exit M40 at Junction 10. Turn right onto B430 and continue for approx 2 miles towards Middleton Stoney. After approx 2 miles take a right turn towards Upper Heyford until you reach a T-Junction. Turn right at the T-junction. This road will take you through the old Upper Heyford Air Base. Continue straight through the base and out the other side (approximately 1 mile) until you reach another T-junction. Turn left towards Lower Heyford. Continue through Lower Heyford, over a railway bridge and onto the traffic lights on the river bridge. After the river bridge turn immediately right towards Steeple Aston. Once in SteepleAston, turn right at the Post Office towards Middle Aston. Continue out of Steeple Aston past the school on the left and straight on for approx 1 mile. Middle Aston House is on your left. From the South Exit M40 at Junction 9. Turn right onto A41 towards Bicester. Continue straight over two roundabouts (Tesco is on your right). At the next mini roundabout turn left onto B4030 towards Middleton Stoney. At Middleton Stoney go straight over at the traffic lights signposted Lower Heyford and Enstone. Continue along this road for approx 4 miles until you reach a T-junction (NB this is not shown as a T-junction on road maps.) At the T-junction turn left towards Lower Heyford. Continue through Lower Heyford, over a railway bridge and onto the traffic lights on the river bridge. After the river bridge turn immediately right towards Steeple Aston. Once in Steeple Aston, turn right at the Post Office towards Middle Aston. Continue out of Steeple Aston past the school on the left and straight on for approx 1 mile. DOES YOUR CHURCH HAVE WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN ARCHITECTS? George Edmund Street Diocesan Church Building Society, and moved to Wantage. The job involved checking designs submitted by other architects, and brought him commissions of his own. Also in 1850 he made his first visit to the Continent, touring Northern France. He later published important books on Gothic architecture in Italy and Spain. The Diocese of Oxford is extraordinarily fortunate to possess so much of his work In 1852 he moved to Oxford. Important commissions included Cuddesdon College, in 1853, and All Saints, Boyne Hill, Maidenhead, in 1854. In the next year Street moved to London, but he continued to check designs for the Oxford Diocesan Building Society, and to do extensive work in the Diocese, until his death in 1881. In Berkshire alone he worked on 34 churches, his contribution ranging from minor repairs to complete new buildings, and he built fifteen schools, eight parsonages, and one convent. The figures for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are similar. Street’s new churches are generally admired. They include both grand town churches, like All Saints, Boyne Hill, and SS Philip and James, Oxford (no longer in use for worship), and remarkable country churches such as Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire, Filkins and Milton- under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, and Westcott and New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. There are still some people for whom Victorian church restoration is a matter for disapproval. Exciting times are ahead for us all. With the easing of lockdown we are now able to look forward to the theatre coming to town, and by that I mean The Green. The Mikron Theatre, the amazing annual Flower & JUNE 2021, No:368 Produce Show, a Village Party and, of course, Aunt Sally, which has started up again! What is not to get excited about? CHAMBERS SUMMARy During the autumn of I9 73 a watching briif was kept over a series ofpipe trenches dug for the installation of main drainage in and around the shrunken medieval village of Somerton, Oxon. (SP497287).' Continuous observation of the open trench sections provided material from the medieval village' and also enabled a reappraisal of the cemetery at Castle Yard (SP496288).' THE VILLAGE HIS report is concerned with the archaeological information from pipe trenches. T The historical and topographical background has been included to provide a context for the features encountered and is not a comprehensive account of the whole village,' which was one of the largest and richest in Ploughley Hundred during the Middle Ages. Since the medieval period the village has shrunk, leaving the present nucleated settlement with the Norman parish church on its southerr. edge (FIG. I). The deserted areas which surround the present village are for the most part under pasture with earthworks clearly visible (PL. Xl, A). On the west side of the village, Church Street forms a ' T ' junction with a hollow way shown by Davis' map to have been disused and under pasture by 1797.' Northwards the way ends by the assumed castle fishponds. Some 100 m. south-west of Church Street the h~llow way con tinues westwards and forms the boundary between some less pronounced village earthworks to the north and the edge of the open field to the south (PL. Xl, A)." The western limit of the open field and a further length of the hollow way lie buried by the mid nineteenth-century railway embankment.
