Unusually for North Cornwall, the cove enjoys uninterrupted southerly views upstream towards Padstow and Rock. The north coast has some of the most spectacular and rugged coastal scenery in Cornwall where the Atlantic meets high cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches making it a popular destination for walkers and surfers. The South West Coastal footpath provides many miles of spectacular clifftop walks, whilst the Camel Trail, a disused railway line which runs between Bodmin Moor and Padstow is popular with both walkers and cyclists. Nearby Padstow, which has a tidal marina and active fishing fleet, is famous as a foodies destination and is home to celebrity chefs including Rick Stein and Paul Ainsworth. The town has numerous excellent eateries and is often regarded as one of Cornwall’s best gastronomic destinations, with fabulous fresh seafood landed daily. Padstow also has an extensive range of boutique shops and galleries, as well as a supermarket, which cater for all day to day needs. The market town of Wadebridge at the top of the Camel Estuary provides a further range of shopping and leisure facilities as well as access to the A39 and Bodmin. There are two first rate golf courses in the area including Trevose Golf Club, overlooking Constantine Bay to the west and St. Enodoc Golf Club to the east in the ever popular waterside resort of Rock, which is accessible by road via Wadebridge, or passenger ferry between Padstow and Rock. Communication links to the area are excellent, with the A30 at Bodmin providing dual carriageway links to Exeter and the M5 Motorway network. There is a mainline train station at Bodmin with regular links to London Paddington, whilst Cornwall Airport at Newquay (20 minute drive approx) provides several daily flights to London Heathrow, Southend and other UK and International airports. HISTORICAL NOTE 6 Pilots Cottages occupies the end of a terrace of just six former pilots cottages, set above Hawkers Cove on the Camel Estuary. As their name suggests, the cottages were originally built as a homes for the crews of pilot gig boats, who would row out to meet the visiting ships, to safely guide them through the tricky waters of the Camel Estuary, past the notorious Doom Bar, the graveyard of many ships, to either Padstow or further upstream to Wadebridge. In 1827 the Padstow Harbour Association chose Hawker’s Cove as the location for the Padstow Lifeboat, this being taken over by the RNLI in 1856. A new lifeboat station and slipway were built in 1931 and a second lifeboat was stationed at Hawker’s Cove until the late 1960’s following which it was converted to a private residence. SUMMARY OF ACCOMMODATION 6 Pilots Cottages is the eastern end of terrace and is offered to the open market for the first time in over 50 years. The cottage is constructed of stone under a Delabole slate roof, which was replaced in 2015, with characterful accommodation over two floors, a waterside garden with tidal mooring and outhaul, terraces, areas of lawn and a secluded summer house. The ground floor comprises a reception hall, a kitchen with dining area and sitting room. There are three bedrooms on the first floor which share a family bathroom and there is a separate utility room at the back of the cottage. In addition to the accommodation in the cottage, there is a detached artist’s studio, which has a WC and doors opening onto a terrace and sheltered area of garden with Estuary views. GARDENS AND GROUNDS The south facing front gardens descend down to a gate that provides access on to the rocks above the foreshore of Hawkers Cove. Spectacular and uninterrupted views are enjoyed across Tregirls Beach and the Camel Estuary, whilst the terrace is sheltered from the harsher northerly and westerly winds from Trevose Head and Stepper Point. There are areas of garden to the north and east of the cottage, which contain two further outbuildings and lead to the parking area at the top of the northern boundary. From the gardens, there is easy access to The South West Coastal Footpath, Tregirls Beach and a private slipway, shared by the residents of Hawkers Cove.
