Both f plane and spherical geometry without a mean ¯ow are considered. The simulations used in this study indicate the existence of a track mode in which vortices are trapped by the topography and follow a clockwise island-circulating path. The trapping of a hurricane-like vortex can be interpreted in terms of the in¯uence of the island topographic b effect on the vortex track. Experiments on the f plane indicate that the drift speed along the clockwise path is proportional to the square root of bevmax. The applicability of the square root law on the f plane is dependent on the degree to which the local be effect is felt by the vortex. The experiments on the sphere also demonstrate that the speed along the clockwise path is larger for a vortex with a larger maximum wind vmax. The occurrence of hurricane-like vortex trapping, however, is not sensitive to the value of vmax. When there is no background ¯ow, the vortex will drift to the northwest in the presence of the planetary vorticity gradient. The b drift speed acts to keep the vortex from being trapped. -

The Polynesians colonized Hawaii, Easter Island, and Madagascar by 500 A.D. 507 Men from Tsinngan, China report being blown across the Great Sea East to a people who speak a strange language. 508 In England, the rivers were frozen for more than two months (including Thames?). Possible severe winter. Rivers frozen for two months. Years also quoted as 507 or 509. 514 St. Brendan (484-577) of Ireland explored the area discovering the Hebrides, Orkney, Faeroe Islands and Iceland, starting about this time. -

Mariners Weather Log Mariners Weather Log From the Editorial Supervisor The Mariners Weather Log has been receiving many wonderful articles from different authors, and this issue is no exception. Featured in this issue is an article about Supertyphoon Tip (the most powerful tropical storm ever Editorial Supervisor recorded), a report on the El Niño, and an informative Martin S. Baron article on the Coriolis effect (explaining the effect of the earth’s rotation on winds and ocean currents, and why wind Editor doesn’t blow directly from high to low pressure). We also Mary Ann Burke have a report on “Dial-A-Buoy,” a new National Data Buoy Center program providing phone access to wind and U.S. Department of Commerce William M. Daley, Secretary wave data and marine forecasts. We are very fortunate to have these and many other well-written articles, and I National Oceanic and thank the authors for their outstanding work. Atmospheric Administration Dr. D. James Baker, Administrator There remains some confusion about our printing schedule. As reported in the April 1998 issue, a trimester production National Weather Service schedule has begun, with issues scheduled to appear in John J. Kelly, Jr., April, August, and December of each year. During 1997, Assistant Administrator for Weather Services only one issue (Spring, 1997, Vol. 41, No.1) was produced. -
