Volume 20 Issue 6 Opposite Lock by Eric Drumwright, President June 2010 Here’s…..June! May gave us a little bit of everything, didn’t it? We had cold, wet, and rainy, and we had down right HOT!! Let’s hope June gives us plenty of days in the mid-seventies. You know, What’s Inside perfect Miata driving weather. We did have some nice weather early in the month, but I drove my other car with the A.C. on to try and keep my allergies at bay. My wife, Ann, was nice enough to mow Page 2 the yard a few times, again to help with my allergies. Once my allergies got better I was back on the Upcoming Events. mower again. We drove the John Deere a lot more this month than we did the Miata. The mower is a zero-turn, but I’ll still take the Miata. After all, the mower only tops out at eight miles an hour! The fast nine shoot-out made for plenty of drama, but Helio Castroneves Page 4 had everybody scrambling to catch up, with his super-quick first run. Helio took the pole, with some Is Your Car Special? drivers making as many as three runs to try and better his time. Bump day saw lots of drama in the final hour. Nineteen year old rookie Sebastian Saavedra made the field only after two qualified cars withdrew their times in an attempt to set a faster time, to keep Page 5 themselves from getting bumped. This backfired, as neither could match the time they scrapped! SOP Preview. Saavedra got the news as he awaited an M.R.I. at the hospital, after crashing late in the afternoon! I really love being at the race track as I’m right in the middle of things! During qualifying, I’m right in front of the cars as they pull out of the pits. This year Milka Duno lit up her tires as she left the Page 6 pits. As her rear end got sideways as I panned with a very wide angle lens as she went by. She had missed the metal barricade I was behind by about four inches! As the final minutes of bump day ticked off, I was just to the driver’s right as they left the pits. I was right there as the teams made the decisions to pull their times and go back out and try to do better. Race day was very hot. They said it might have been the hottest “500’’ ever, at 96 degrees! It was a good race, with Dario Franchitti leading the most laps and taking the checkered flag. I must say I was pulling for Tony Kanaan to go from thirty-third place to first to get the win. He got as high as second place, before a late pit stop for fuel dropped him to eleventh place. I’m glad to see that Mike Conway suffered only a broken leg, after the horrifying crash he had with Ryan Hunter-Reay on the next to last lap! On the night before the “500” we got together with about twelve other Miatas for a mingle at the Culver’s in Noblesville. The weather was nice as we visited or had a bite to eat before heading over to the town square to see the classic car show. A couple from Iowa even showed up, they found our event on Miata.net! They were in town for the race and came by to join us. After the race they were driving on the Virginia! Nice little road trip! I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day! Please check the events calendar for June. Try and get out and meet your fellow members for some fun! I’ll see you on the road! 2 Open Road June 2010 Indy Miata Upcoming Events In June June looks to be a busy month for the Indy Miata Club with three events on the Club Officers schedule.
