Much inclosure of Common Land, Open Fields and Moor Land (or Waste), formerly farmed collectively by the residents on behalf of the Lord of the Manor, had taken place by the 18th century, but the uplands of County Durham remained largely unenclosed. Inclosures, to consolidate land-holdings, divide the land (into Allotments) and fence it off from other usage, could be made under a Private Act of Parliament or by general agreement of the landowners concerned. In the latter case the Agreement would be Enrolled as a Decree at the Court of Chancery in Durham and/or lodged with the Clerk of the Peace, the senior government officer in the County, so may be preserved in Quarter Sessions records. In the case of Parliamentary Enclosure a Local Bill would be put before Parliament which would pass it into law as an Inclosure Act. The Acts appointed Commissioners to survey the area concerned and determine its distribution as a published Inclosure Award.

  • County Durham Landscape Character Assessment: Classification
LANDSCAPE CHARACTER THE LANDSCAPE CLASSIFICATION The Landscape Classification The County Durham Landscape Character Assessment identifies landscape types and character areas at three different levels - the regional, the sub-regional and the local. Regional County Character Areas Sub-regional Broad Landscape Types Broad Character Areas See Table 1 Local Local Landscape Types See Table 2 Local Sub-types County Character Areas. County Character Areas are based on Natural England’s Countryside Character Areas. There are 6 Countryside Character Areas in County Durham, all of which extend beyond its administrative boundaries. County Character Areas are effectively those parts of Countryside Character Areas lying within the County. The boundaries of County Character Areas are more precisely drawn than those of Countryside Character Areas as they are based on a more detailed level of assessment. In reality the boundaries between these broad landscape zones are often gradual and progressive and difficult to identify precisely on the ground. The character of County Character Areas may differ in some ways from that of the larger Countryside Character Areas to which they belong. The descriptions of County Character Areas given here in the Landscape Assessment may therefore be slightly different to the descriptions given in other publications for Countryside Character Areas. Broad Landscape Types and Character Areas Broad Landscape Types are landscapes with similar patterns of geology, soils, vegetation, land use, settlement and field patterns identified at a broad sub-regional level. As with County Character Areas, the boundaries between Broad Landscape Types are not always precise, as the change between one landscape and another can be gradual and progressive.

This fault zone has been proposed as a source of deep geothermal energy; to facilitate the design of a geothermal project in the town of Bishop Auckland further investigation of its geometry was necessary and led to the present study. We show using three-dimensional modelling of a dense local gravity survey, combined with structural inversion, that this fault has a ramp-flat-ramp geometry, ~250 m of latest Carboniferous / Early Permian downthrow having occurred on a fault surface that is not a planar updip continuation of that which had accommodated the many kilometres of Dinantian extension. The gravity survey also reveals relatively low-density sediments in the hanging-wall of the Dinantian fault, interpreted as porous alluvial fan deposits, indicating that a favourable geothermal target indeed exists in the area.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOUNDARY COMMISSION FOR ENGLAND CHAIRMAN Mr G J Ellerton CMC MBE DEPUTY CHAIRMAN Mr J G Powell FRIGS FSVA MEMBERS Lady Ackner Mr T Brockbank DL Professor G E Cherry Mi- K J L Newell Mr B Scholes OBE THE RT. HON. PATRICK JENKIN MP SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUND 1. In a letter dated 20 March 198! the Chester-le-Street District Council invited us to make proposals for certain changes to the boundary of their district with the district of the City of Durham. The suggestion for changes had arisen during the course of the review by the District Council of the parish pattern in their area and involved the parishes of Plawsworth and Sacriston. Durham City Council had not at that stage completed their own parish review, but it was clear that the changes concerned were not supported by them or by the councils of the three parishes in their district which would be involved - Framwellgate Moor, Kimblesworth and Witton Gilbert. We decided to defer action on the matter until we had received Durham City Council's parish review report. ?., In submitting their report in August 1982 Durham City Council opposed all the district boundary changes suggested by Chester-le-Street District Council; Kimblesworth Parish Council wrote to us separately to emphasise their opposition to the ones affecting then. The City Council sent us a copy of a letter from the Durham County Council, however, which said, in relation to the possibility of changes in th^ Kimblesworth Parish boundary, that the Council considered that the villages of Kimblesworth and Nettlesworth (the latter currently in Plawsworth Parish, Chester-le-Street) should be treated as one settlement and that future development should be in relation to a single local plan.

  • East Durham Area Action Partnership Annual Report 2020-2021
East Durham Area Action Partnership Better for everyone East Durham Area Action Partnership Annual Report 2020/21 Introduction The past twelve months have challenged us all in many ways. The Covid pandemic has changed how the council and Area Action Partnerships (AAPs) have had to work as many communities and local residents have struggled because of the restrictions that we have all had to follow. If there are positives we can take from this terrible situation it is that ‘community’ is alive and well in County Durham. Thousands of people have stepped forward and have taken action to ensure the most isolated and vulnerable have been looked after. The people of County Durham need to be applauded for their efforts. Many of those organisations that have been helping out have been supported by the AAPs who have provided funding to numerous groups enabling them to do their vital work. Some of this funding has come directly through the AAPs whilst other resources have been allocated from the County Councillors Neighbourhood Budgets. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the AAP teams for their help and support in ensuring that our Neighbourhood Budgets have been making a real difference in local communities. The next year will be no less challenging but I am delighted to say that the AAPs are being given extra resources to help communities recover from the pandemic. There is also new funding to support the County Council’s Towns and Villages Programme and the AAPs will be playing a key role in ensuring this funding helps to improve communities across County Durham.

  • Sedgefield Local Plan Environment Chapter
Sedgefield Borough Local Plan Page 1 ENVIRONMENT The Borough consists of distinctive landscape areas that together create its particular character and provide the setting for the built environment of the various towns and villages. Most of the towns and villages in the Borough developed rapidly in response to growth in industry and coal mining over the last 100 years and contain relics of the industrial past; some show evidence of their agricultural origins. Parts of twelve towns and villages are designated conservation areas. There are over 170 listed buildings of architectural or historic interest. The built environment provides the background to where people live, work and spend much of their leisure time and helps to create the identity of different places. The natural environment consists primarily of the countryside between and around settlements but also areas of open space within towns and villages. The countryside is mainly in agricultural use but is also a valuable resource for recreation, leisure and wildlife. The open spaces within settlements are of value for a variety of uses and provide an attractive setting to built development. Within the countryside there are areas recognised for their special quality and interest. There are four areas of historic landscape, three of which are designated as conservation areas, seven Sites of Special Scientific Interest and four scheduled ancient monuments. The landscape is varied and is divided into four characteristic areas: the Magnesian Limestone escarpment, the River Wear Valley Shelf, and River Wear Valley Area of Landscape Value, and the Southern and Eastern Lowlands. The Borough is fortunate in that there is little derelict land remaining from its industrial past.
