AIIMS was entrusted with the responsibility to develop highest standards of teaching, research and patient care in the country. It has the mandate to develop and demonstrate patterns of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all the streams of medicine and it aims to bring together at one place, medical & educational facilities of the highest order. AIIMS has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient care. The institute awards its own undergraduate, postgraduate and post-doctoral degrees. The training & research is carried out in more than fifty medical disciplines at AIIMS. It utilizes most advanced methodologies for medical training in India. It plays a leading role in the field of medical research by way of generating more than 1500 research publications every year. The patient care at AIIMS is provided by its main hospital and its super-specialty centres, which by themselves are centres of excellence and are catering to a large population of India & also of the neighbouring countries . These super-specialty centres are Dr. Rajendra Prasad Center for Opthalmic Sciences, Cardio Thoracic Centre, Neuro Sciences Centre, Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, Centre for Dental Education & Research & Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre. Community based programmes have always been an integeral part of the institute's clinical & research activities , it has it's community health centre known as CRHSP at Ballabhgarh, Haryana . Institute has been instrumental in the field of transplant of human organs & these activities are being monitored by the ORBO. As on date, AIIMS has more than 2,226 patiernt care beds & shortly it is going to add many more as new organ / speciality based centres are about to come up . During the year 2010-11 the institute catered to 25.54 Lakh outpatients and 1.62Lakh inpatients. More than 1,49,365 surgical procedures were carried out, which included some of the most complicated and rare cases. In keeping pace with rapid advancements in the field of tele communication, the facility for telemedicine has been made operational with connectivity with a large no of institutes/hospitals. The Pan-African e-network connecting 53 African Countries has also started functioning. During the last 56 years of its existence, AIIMS has emerged as a national leader and has established benchmarks in the field of teaching, training, research and patient care, that are recognized across the nation and the globe.
