PILLAR OF FIRE

Ballet by Music by Arnold Schoenberg ("Verklaerte Nacht") Scenery and Costumes by Jo Miel:!iner .. Lighting by Jean Rosenthal

Hagar, whose elder sister is a spinster, forsees the same fate for herself. When the man she unrequitedly loves seems to show pre""erence for her younger sister, Hagar in distraction gives herself to one she does not love. The resulting crisi s, however, unites her with the man she really loves. The ballet is set in the period around 1900 because it was then that Schoenberg composed the music.

ETUDES

Ballet and choreography by Harald Lander Music by Knudaage Riisager (after Czerny) By arrangement with Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., Sole Agent .. Scenery and Costumes by Rolf Gerard Lighting by Nananne Porcher

This ba llet may be considered a pictorial representation of the work which must be accomplished by dancers t hroughout the long and difficult yea rs which culminate in a perfect fusion of art an d technique. It illustrates the complet e development of classical ballet from the basic f ive positions to pure vi rtuosity.

The 'Etudes" of Czerny were used to accompany this demonstration because of the appropriate character of the music.
