SUMMER MISSIONARY CO-OP APPEAL July 20 & 21

E P

To bring the Good News to the poor and the most abandoned

The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) is a missionary religious congregation in the , founded on January 25, 1816, by St. Eugène de Mazenod, a French priest born in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France on August 1, 1782. The congregation was given recognition by Pope Leo XII on February 17, 1826.

The former Northern U.S. Province first sent Oblates to Haiti in 1943. Oblates presently staff 24 parishes in several dioceses; they have established several primary and secondary schools, a pre-novitiate, novitiate, and scholasticate in Haiti. Today 110 Oblates minister in Haiti and they have founded with Haitian natives, priests and brothers, two missions: Colombia and French Guiana. There are more than a dozen of Oblates from Haiti ministering to Canada, USA.

The Oblates from the Northern US province, have had the financial support of their relatives and friends to initiate and maintain all our ministries. The Oblates par- ticipation in the Mission Appeal of the Archdiocese of Chicago intends to financially support all those ministries in Haiti, and extend their Educational System to College Degree, after High School.

Fr. Arlin Jean Louis, OMI, from Haiti, who will be our guest next weekend, is doing chaplaincy ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

St. Mary’s Bible Study 2019 Registration is now open for St. Mary’s Bible Study which begins in September of 2019. This year’s program will be comprised of three ‘short’ and intriguing studies:

Dei Verbum – A Catholic Scripture Study program that includes a workbook with commentary and questions and lectures by Fr. Mark Augustine.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible – Ascension Press workbook, color-coded Bible Timeline, and 30-minute video lectures by Jeff Cavins (shown in class and available online).

Sacraments – A St. Benedict Press program with workbook and 30-minute video lectures by Fr. Matthew Kauth (shown in class and available online).

Past participants of St. Mary’s Bible Study recommend it for these reasons:

♦ Fellowship, faith sharing, and the support of other faithful Catholics ♦ Opportunity to dig deeper into Scripture ♦ Increases appreciation for the faith, for the Church, and for the Mass ♦ Small group discussions ♦ Well-prepared leaders ♦ Luncheons and Mundelein Seminary day

Bible Study begins on September 12 and ends March 5, with a break from Thanksgiving through New Year.

Registration forms are available at churchofstmary.org under the Faith Formation tab.

For information on the Morning Program please contact Jeanne Hlavacek at [email protected]. For the Evening Program, please contact Deacon Jack Herrmann at [email protected]. Save the Date / May 11 - 21, 2020 Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of St. Paul Join Fr. Mark Augustine and Deacon Bob Thomas for a 10-day pil- grimage through Greece and Turkey, stopping at many of the sites St. Paul visited on his apostolic journeys to proclaim the Gospel! We will spend three nights in Athens, three nights in Thessalonica, and three nights on the Aegean Sea as we visit many local islands, including Patmos, where the Book of Revelation was written. More information, registration, and cost will be presented in the coming weeks!

JULY IS HIV AWARENESS MONTH!

While great progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and in reducing the number of deaths from the disease, we continue to see new infections. Of the 1 ¼ million people in the United States who are HIV+, 15 to 20% of these DO NOT KNOW that they are infected and are potentially spreading the virus to others. It is estimated that nearly 40,000 new HIV infections occur every year in the United States. Complacency about HIV/ AIDS contributes to these numbers.

This month offers an opportunity to bring attention to the need to educate at risk populations in your community about the importance of testing and prevention, and seeking care for those who are HIV+.

"As a rule there should be a sponsor for each of those to be confirmed. These sponsors bring the candidates to receive the sacrament, present them to the minister for the anointing, and will later help them to fulfill their baptismal prom- ises faithfully under the influence of the Holy Spirit whom they have received." (The Rite of Confirmation #5) A sponsor must, as 874 states:  Have the qualificaons and intenon of performing this role  Have completed their sixteenth year  Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist and leads a life in harmony with their faith and the role to be undertaken  Not be bound by any canonical penalty legimately imposed or declared  Not be the father or mother of the one to be confirmed A Sponsor is expected to:  Journey with the candidate during the different aspects of the local preparaon program, including Rehearsal and the celebraon of Confirmaon.  Be a friend and companion to the candidate, helping the candidate before and even aer the actual celebraon of the Sacrament.  A sponsor should be chosen early in your sacrament formaon process so they can walk through the faith journey with the candidate.

From the earliest days of the Church, those seeking communion with the Church were supported by specific people chosen from the community. At Bapsm those significant people are your parents and godparents (your bapsmal sponsors) who promised that you would be raised in the faith. They professed their faith because you could not speak for yourself. Your parents accepted the responsibility of training you in the pracce of the faith. Your godparents promised to help your parents. In Confirmaon you speak for yourself; you renew your bapsmal promises. You are supported by a sponsor who stands with you and presents you to the Bishop for Confirmaon and will later help you to fulfill your bapsmal promises faithfully under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

It is desirable that the godparent at Bapsm also be the sponsor at Confirmaon. This change expresses more clearly the relaonship between Bapsm and Confirmaon and also makes the funcon and responsibility of the sponsor more effecve. Our 7th grade students are currently discerning their choice of sponsor. We ask all the parishioners of St. Mary’s to pray for them as they take this important step in their Confirmation preparation.
