Adventure Stories Nonfiction
Santa Cruz Public Libraries - Readers' Advisory Adventure Stories Nonfiction Real life adventure stories for adventurous readers. Hand picked by your local librarian. Adventure Stories The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: and their race to save the world's most precious manuscripts by Hammer, Joshua 025.8 HAM Journalist Hammer (Yokohama Burning) reports on librarian Abdel Kader Haidara and his associates' harrowing ordeal as they rescued 370,000 historical manuscripts from destruction by al-Qaeda-occupied Timbuktu. Hammer sketches Haidara's career amassing manuscripts from Timbuktu's neighboring towns and building his own library, which opened in 2000. Meanwhile, three al-Qaeda operatives, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, Abdel-hamid Abou Zeid, and Iyad Ag Ghali, escalate from kidnapping and drug trafficking to orchestrating a coup with Tuareg rebels against the Malian army and seizing Timbuktu. The militants aim to "turn the clocks back fourteen hundred years" by destroying revered religious shrines and imposing Sharia law, which includes flogging unveiled women and severing the hands of thieves. Fearing for the safety of the manuscripts, Haidara and associates buy up "every trunk in Timbuktu" and pack them off 606 miles south to Bamako, employing a team of teenage couriers. Hammer does a service to Haidara and the Islamic faith by providing the illuminating history of these manuscripts, managing to weave the complicated threads of this recent segment of history into a thrilling story. Parents should monitor book selections. Books appearing on the list have been selected based upon suitability, quality, variety, faculty and student recommendations, and the fact that they are not required reading titles for a course. Be sure to select both book titles from the list! Students are required to read (or listen) to two books from the 2010 Summer Reading List to fulfill the summer reading requirement. Substitutions or other book titles by the same author will not be accepted nor will book titles reported from previous years. Most of the books can be found in a separate collection at East Lyme Public Library. Staff at East Lyme Public Library and Salem Library will help students obtain copies. Local and online bookstores are also sources for obtaining books as well as other local libraries. All books chosen for this assignment must be from the 2010 Summer Reading list. Substitutions or other books by the author are not acceptable. Assessment: In September there will be two Mentor/Mentee meetings devoted to a school- wide focus on reading discussions. Students will meet in small groups with their faculty mentor to discuss their readings and respond to questions. -

FREE PIRATE LATITUDES PDF Michael Crichton | 400 pages | 01 Apr 2010 | HarperCollins Publishers | 9780007329106 | English | London, United Kingdom Pirate Latitudes - Based On A True Story A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it. Word Pirate Latitudes port is that the galleon El Trinidad, Pirate Latitudes from New Spain, is awaiting repairs Pirate Latitudes a nearby harbor. Heavily fortified, the impregnable harbor is guarded by the bloodthirsty Cazalla, a favorite commander of the Spanish king himself. With backing from a powerful ally, Hunter assembles a crew of ruffians to infiltrate the enemy outpost and commandeer El Trinidad, along with its fortune in Spanish gold. The raid is Pirate Latitudes perilous as the bloodiest tales of island legend, and Hunter will lose more than one Pirate Latitudes before he even sets foot on foreign shores, where dense jungle and the firepower of Spanish infantry stand between him and the treasure. Pirate Latitudes is Michael Crichton at his best: a rollicking adventure tale pulsing with relentless action, crackling atmosphere, and heart-pounding suspense. I think that the people of the 17th century were very different from us in their assumptions about the universe, their notions about human behavior, and their fundamental values. We tend to think that Charles II was pretty much like any of us, except that he happened to be king. -
