Summer Reading 2010

The summer reading list provides students with the opportunity to expand their horizons by reading books which they might not otherwise encounter in school. Parents should monitor book selections. Books appearing on the list have been selected based upon suitability, quality, variety, faculty and student recommendations, and the fact that they are not required reading titles for a course.

Be sure to select both book titles from the list!

Students are required to read (or listen) to two books from the 2010 Summer Reading List to fulfill the summer reading requirement. Substitutions or other book titles by the same author not be accepted nor will book titles reported from previous years.

Most of the books can be found in a separate collection at East Lyme Public Library. Staff at East Lyme Public Library and Salem Library will help students obtain copies. Local and online bookstores are also sources for obtaining books as well as other local libraries.

All books chosen for this assignment must be from the 2010 Summer Reading list. Substitutions or other books by the author are not acceptable.

Assessment: In September there will be two Mentor/Mentee meetings devoted to a school- wide focus on reading discussions. Students will meet in small groups with their faculty mentor to discuss their readings and respond to questions. A card with cue words may be used as a prompt if needed during the book discussion.

Grading standards are:

P: Student aptly summarizes and interprets book (see Advanced and Basic on the rubric).

F: Student has not read two books from the 2010 Summer Reading List or cannot explain either one of the two books so that anyone else can understand the content or did not appear at the group discussion session (see Does Not Meet Standard on rubric).

These grades will appear as a separate line on permanent records and transcripts.

Requirements for new students registering during the summer: Students new to the school that register prior to August 1 will be required to read two books. Students who register between August 1 and August 15 will be required to read one book.
