Improve approximately 1,864 feet/.35 miles of existing trail from 11,700 to 11,900’. Close and restore 8 illegal campsites & 5 major social trails totaling 2,975 feet/.56 miles. Phase II (2017-2018): Construct 2,010 feet/.38 miles of existing trail. Phase III (2019-2020): Construct ~2,640 feet/.5 miles of sustainable, primitive-use trail at elevations above 12,000 feet. This is more than a 300% inCrease over visitation levels doCumented in 1987. Approximately 500,000 users were expeCted in 2018. • A trail Counter installed (outside of Wilderness Area boundaries) on Challenger Ridge (elevation 13,900') tallied more than 90 visitors on one day in the summer of 2017. • The Current route that aCCesses Challenger Point is a fall-line trail that follows a linear route up a very steep slope. This puts users directly above and below one another over a more than 2,000-foot stretCh. This poses signifiCant risk to users in the form of falling rocks. • Mass wasting www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Statewide Map www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Phases Phase I: 2014-16 Phase II: 2017-18 Phase III: 2019-20 www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Project Map www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Existing Conditions www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Existing Conditions www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Who is doing the work? • RMFI Staff: – Executive Director – Program Director – Program Coordinator – Volunteer & Partnership Coordinator – Office Manager – Field Coordinator – Field Instructor – Board of Directors • Southwest Conservation Corps “Super Crew” • Earth Corps Field Studies Course (UCCS & industry experts) • Community Volunteers (Colorado Mountain Club) • U.S. Forest Service Fourteener Program & Saguache RD • National Forest Foundation – Find Your Fourteener Campaign • National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance – Wilderness Stewardship Performance • Llamas? www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Earth Corps Earth Corps is a 30-day field studies course for undergraduate college students • Developing the next generation of conservation leaders, environmental stewards, publiC lands advoCates • Combines field studies with techniCal skills development • 18 years and running • 11 visiting professors and industry experts provide place-based leCtures • Pipeline for future trail teChniCians • CAEE award for EduCational ExCellenCe www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE The work www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Before & After www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Before & After www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Before & After www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Before & After www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE After Images www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE 2020 Objective www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE 2019 Accomplishments Work Statistics Labor Statistics • 324 linear feet of trail constructed • 35 youth corps work days • 17 linear feet of trail improved • 2,360 youth corps hours • 132 rock risers • 62 RMFI staff work days • 1,544 square feet of retaining wall • 1,493 RMFI staff work hours • 249 square feet rubble wall • 16 volunteer work days • 15 linear feet mono wall • 626 volunteer work hours • 41 gargoyles • $15,919 volunteer value • 104 linear feet social trail restored • 7 check dams • 47 native transplants • 10 cubic yards soil • 26 tons of rock www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE Joe Lavorini Program Director [email protected] (719)471-7736 Rocky Mountain Field Institute 815 South 25th Street, Suite 101 Colorado Springs, CO 80904 www.rmfi.org Name Jennifer Peterson Position at RMFI Executive Director Rocky Mountain Field Institute Date September 20, 2019 Presentation to State Trails Committee WALDO CANYON PLANNING PROJECT • March 2018: $45,000 planning grant awarded to RMFI to help facilitate public planning process for Waldo Canyon. – 18-TRLG-109471 (ends June 30, 2020). – Waldo Canyon Trail has been closed to the public since June 2012 due to Waldo Canyon Fire. – National Forest surrounding trail reopened in October 2017. www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE PUBLIC PROCESS APPROACH www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE PROJECT PARTNERS • Project Partners: – Rocky Mountain Field Institute – U.S. Forest Service – City of Colorado Springs Parks Department – Trails and Open Space Coalition • Professional Consultant: – Tapis Associates www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE PROJECT WEBSITE • Project Website: – waldocanyonplanning.com (and .org) www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE WALDO CANYON ROUNDTABLE • Waldo Canyon Roundtable: – Formed in August 2018. – Comprised of 20+ key stakeHolders representing a variety of uses and interests. – Modeled after highly successful Bear Creek Roundtable. • Roundtable Meetings: – 4 meetings held to date; 7 total meetings planned through April 2020. www.RMFI.org ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIELD INSTITUTE WALDO CANYON ROUNDTABLE AGENCIES 13.
