What is Best Buddies? What does this organization do? Best Buddies is a student-run organization on campus that provides students and people from the community that identify as having an intellectual or developmental disability with a great environment to create lasting friendships. Our goal is to spread the message of inclusion! We put on events (all virtual this year) where both groups can get to know each other. We offer one-on-one friendships where an SNC student is paired with one of our buddies (a person with an IDD), as well as just general par- ticipation, which we refer to as associate members.

What is the best part about being in this organization? The best part of SNC Best Buddies is seeing the friendships develop amongst our members. Once two people are paired they begin a new friendship, which of course comes with a transitional period of getting to know someone. But as the months go by, and they each get to know a little more about their buddy, we see a great new relationship being formed between two people that may never have gotten to know each other had they not joined SNC Best Buddies.

What is your position in this organization? President

Why did you become involved with Best Buddies? I originally became involved with SNC Best Buddies as a freshman because it was the only org on campus that reminded me of high school. There was a feeling of home when I attended the informational session. I originally wanted to be an associate member because I didn’t think I had enough time to commit to being a peer buddy. But luckily for me, the person who was supposed to be paired with Kyla, my now buddy of 3 and 1/2 years, did not show at the event, so I was asked if I would want to be matched with Kyla. If only I had known I was going to meet a forever friend that day, I would have written that other student a thank you note for not making it to the match party.

Why is this organization important on St. Norbert’s campus? SNC Best Buddies is an important organization on campus because it allows students to continue to be who they are, just with a new friend group that they would not have met through a different organization on campus. SNC Best Buddies brings happiness and laughter and dance parties to campus on nights when students and our buddies need it most. People in the IDD community are so full of light and joy that being around them, and having them join our college community, is something of endless positivity and hope.

Anna: “Grand Army”

I featured “Grand Army” in the “Coming Soon to Netflix” section of the Entertainment section a few issues ago. I watched the first eight episodes over the course of two days and then had a mountain of schoolwork to catch up on, but I finally watched the final episode and all I can say is wow. This show is really good. It follows five different students at the largest public high school in Brooklyn as they struggle to succeed and fight for what is right.

“Grand Army” is intense, to say the least. It deals with themes of racism, sexual assault, terrorism, gender inequalities in schools and sexual identity. The actors do a really incredible job of bringing these complex characters to life; there are some characters I loved at the beginning of the season who I ended up absolutely despising by the end. All of the characters are flawed and imperfect, as all humans are, making them relatable. While “Grand Army” is set in a high school, I would recommend this show to college students, too, because it goes beyond what stereotypical high school dramas are. “Grand Army” is no “Riverdale,” that is for sure. It is a lot more real and raw.

Two of the characters from “Grand Army,” Jayson Jackson and Owen Williams | whats-on-netflix.com Taleise: “Schitt’s Creek” NFL Propses New Affirmative Action Plan With the rise in accessibility of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, binging television has become very popular. The first show I ever binge watched was “Once SARA DILLON | SPORTS COLUMNIST Upon a Time” with my sister in junior high. Since then, I have binged more shows than I can keep track of. The most recent one is “Schitt’s Creek.”

Though I have not finished the show yet, I love it already. The story follows an extremely rich family who has lost all their money. They are forced to move to a very small town that the father, John Rose, bought as a joke for his son. The episodes are around twenty-five minutes each, which means watching an episode is not a huge time commitment. You can watch a lot in one sitting, or you can watch one episode between classes. You do not have to think a lot while watching, which makes it great for bingeing. Because “Schitt’s Creek” is a comedy, it is great for a pick-me-up. The characters are over the top, but still likeable.

One of the main characters, David Rose, is openly pansexual. This is not his main character arc and he is not treated differently because of it, which is a refreshing take in modern television. Most of the time, LGBTQ+ characters are given one personality trait: being queer. They are typically side characters who often die before the show is over. Having a main charatcter who gets to be queer and mulitdimensional is great representation.

If you are looking for a good show to binge or to watch after a stressful day of classes, “Schitt’s Creek” is perfect for you.
