During the 2008-2009 year, among other tasks the Clean Team: • Removed 57,614 pounds of trash • Cleaned 12,790 trash cans • Eliminated 530 graffi ti tags and stickers • Pulled weeds from 549 blocks

3 ANNUAL REPORT 2009 mAintAining PubLiC sPACe Waterfront Partnership enhances its sustainability measures The Green Team took early steps to prepare for thelonger term Waterfront Sustainability Strategy, including removing several turf areas to add more environmentally sound native perennial plants such as golden yellow coreopsis and pink summer phlox. Over 1,100 perennials were installed throughout the Waterfront. Turf areas can produce almost as much run off as hard surfaces, so planting native species not only allows for increased water absorption, it helps us to preserve water since native plants require less watering. The Green Team has also introduced an electric vehicle for its Waterfront work.

In 2008-2009, working 5 days a week, the Green Team installed and managed: • 27,451 summer and fall annuals • 196 hanging and raised planters • 14,500 spring daffodils and tulips • 592 cubic yards of mulch

In addition, two members of the Clean Team were hired full time for the Green Team, making the jump from a job training program to full time work on the Waterfront!

4 ANNUAL REPORT 2009 mAintAining PubLiC sPACe the Walter sondheim fountain Debuts at West shore Park The Inner Harbor’s newest attraction, the Walter Sondheim Fountain, was unveiled in July. This dramatic and fun-fi lled Fountain incorporates water jets shooting up from the ground level, timed with the visual glow of changing colored lights and music every hour on the hour on weekends. Already a favorite with kids of all ages looking to play in the water, the Fountain honors Walter Sondheim whose decades of tireless commitment to Baltimore and to creating an Inner Harbor were known around the world. The Waterfront Partnership raised close to $300,000 in private sector contributions in response to a request from the Mayor to keep the Fountain’s construction on schedule.
