The occurrence of disease outbreaks associated with the genus Sorosporella on grasshoppers and locusts (Orthoptera: Acridoidea) in Africa is reported. Infected hosts, representing ten genera within five acridoid subfamilies, are characterized by red, thick-walled chlamydospores which completely fill the cadaver. On selective media, the chlamydospores, up to seven-years-old, germinated to produce a Syngliocladium anamorph which is considered to be undescribed. The new species Syngliocladium acridiorum is described and two varieties are delimited: var. acridiorum, on various grasshopper and locust genera from the Sahelian region of West Africa; and, var. madagascariensis, on the Madagascan migratory locust. Over the last few decades, molecular markers have been extensively used to study phylogeny, population dynamics, and genome mapping in insects and other taxa. Phylogenetic methods using DNA markers are inexpensive, fast and simple to use, and may help greatly to resolve phylogenetic relationships in groups with problematic taxonomy. However, different markers have various levels of phylogenetic resolution, and it’s important to choose the right set of molecular markers for a studied taxonomy level. Acrididae is the most diverse family of grasshoppers. Many attempts to resolve the phylogenetic relationships within it did not result in a clear picture, partially because of the limited number of molecular markers used. We have tested a phylogenetic resolution of three sets of the most commonly utilized mitochondrial molecular markers available for Acrididae sequences in the database: (i) complete protein-coding mitochondrial sequences, (ii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI, COII, and Cytb, and (iii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI and COII. -

In total 18 species of 5 genera (Anteris Förster, 1856, Psix Kozlov et Le, 1976, Scelio Latreille, 1805, Telenomus Haliday, 1833 and Trissolcus Ashmead, 1893) were collected. Of these, Anteris simulans Kieffer, 1908 is new record for Iran. INTRODUCTION Scelionidae (Hymenoptera) are primary, solitary endoparasitoids of the eggs of insects from most major orders and occasionally of spider eggs (Masner 1995). Members of this large family are surprisingly diverse in appearance, depending on the shape and size of the host egg from which they emerged: cylindrical to depressed, elongate and spindle-shaped to short, squat and stocky (Kononova 1992, Masner 1993). All scelionid wasps are parasitoids of the eggs of other arthropods, that is, females lay their own eggs within the eggs of other species of insects or spiders. The wasp larva that hatches consumes the contents of the host egg and pupates within it. -

Saeed Wagan Department of Zoology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan. Accepted 29 December, 2011 Trombidiidae species are reported as ecto-parasites in their larval stages for the variety of acrididae, which are pests of many economic crops in the world including Pakistan. The current parasitism ratio of red mite, Eutrombidium trigonum , was studied on three host species of Hieroglyphus, which are presently destroying valued crops. It was observed that proportional survival was found to be lower in mites-parasitized specimens. Females of these three species had reduced initial and total reproduction as compared to un-parasitic species. Egg production significantly reduced to 47.23±510.23, 98.67±11.43 and 51.56±12.40 with mite’s parasitism during its entire life in these three studied species. As far as the survival of individuals is concerned, it is also significantly affected by mites’ parasitism. At present, survival of Hieroglyphus species was reported at 20.32±3.43, 42.39±8.46 and 37.25±7.93 days for male and 16.30±2.61, 35.73±10.26 and 25.63±8.40 days for females of Hieroglyphus perpolita Hieroglyphus oryzivorous and Hieroglyphus nigrorepletus respectively. -

The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part of the research surprised the early period can be placed throughout the XIXth century between Latreille and Dalla Torre. Before this period, references about platygastrids and scelionids were made by Linnaeus and Schrank, they are the ones who described the first platygastrid and scelionid respectively. In this the first period work entomologists as: Haliday, Westwood, Walker, Forster, Ashmead, Thomson, Howard, etc., the result of their work being the description of 699 scelionids species which are found quoted in Dalla Torre's catalogue. The second part of the paper is devoted to early 20th century. This vibrant work is marked by the work of two great entomologists: Kieffer and Dodd. In this period one publish the first and only global monograph of platygastrids and scelionids until now. In this monograph are twice the number of species than in Dalla Torre's catalogue which shows the magnitude of the systematic research of those moments. The third part of the paper refers to the late 20th and early 21st century. -

No. 2491, HA Farm Post, Bellary Road, Bangalore 560024, Karnataka, India (Received on 09 April 2013; Revised on 20 August 2013; Accepted on 23 September 2013) Insects, like other organisms, are susceptible to a variety of diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans, and these pathogens are exploited for biological control of insect pests through introductory or inundative applications. Microbial pathogens of insects are intensively investigated to develop environmental friendly pest management strategies in agriculture and forestry. In this paper, the scope for utilization of insect pathogens in pest management in the world and India is reviewed. The most successfully utilized insect pathogen is the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) which is used extensively for management of certain lepidopteran pests. In India, mostly imported products of Bt kurstaki have been used, which are expensive and there is an urgent need to develop aggressive indigenous Bt strains against various pests. Baculoviruses comprising nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) and granulosis virus (GV) have been successfully used as insect pathogens because of their high virulence and specificity. NPV and GV formulations are used for lepidopteran pests like Helicoverpa armigera (HaNPV) and Spodoptera litura (SlNPV) in India, besides Anticarsia gemmatalis NPV in Brazil, Lymanttria disper NPV, Orgyia pseudotsugata NPV in USA and GV of Pieris rapae in China. Lack of easy mass multiplication methods for the commercial production of baculoviruses calls for R&D to develop production in insect tissue cultures.
