It is also a prevalent trope in the CW network teen drama, The Vampire Diaries. The television series is itself a ‘doubling’ in that it is an adaptation of a series of novels by L. J. Smith, creating a situation wherein the same central characters inhabit the parallel townships of the novels’ Fells Church and television’s Mystic Falls, and consequently have histories which are, at times, contradictory.2 The television version also explicitly explores the concept of the doppelgänger, and thus the idea of reflection, even as it manipulates the historical and cultural contexts of the characters. Nuclear families are noticeably absent in the television series, yet significant emphasis is placed on the twin themes of brothers as foils to each other, and an ongoing focus on matrilineal power.

I hope everyone enjoys the latest issue of "Beaubien News!" -Mr. Sarcona Spelling Bee We want to congratulate Levi Taylor for winning the Beaubien Spelling Bee on Friday! The students did so well in fact, that it went over 20 rounds, and had to be stretched out over two days! Great job everyone! Around the School: Map Testing Before winter break, we started MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing. MAP Testing is where you take a test with a certain amount of questions (Math has <50 and Reading has <40). It tests you on your skills based on the points you get in that year. The test starts at grade 2 and ends at grade 12. The minimum/maximum score for the MAP test starts at 100 and ends at 350, according to community.nwea.org. The test raises in difficulty the more questions you get right, and lowers the more you get wrong. In 7th and 8th grade in Beaubien, there is an advanced math class for the people who get a higher MAP score! In this class, the kids learn 8th grade math in 7th grade and 9th grade math in 8th grade. The test bases the questions that are on the test with the score you got from last year.

But one that for thy crime must fall, The youngest, most beloved of all, Shall bless thee with a father's name --- That word shall wrap thy heart in flame! Yet must thou end thy task, and mark Her cheek's last tinge, her eye's last spark, And the last glassy glance must view Which freezes o'er its lifeless blue; Then with unhallow'd hand shalt tear The tresses of her yellow hair, Of which in life a lock when shorn, Affection's fondest pledge was worn, But now is borne away by thee, Memorial of thine agony! from Lord Byron’s The Giaour (1812) ii ABSTRACT Long before Dracula was terrorizing English families, Emily Brontë’s Heathcliff captivated Victorian audiences.

  • Chapter One – Summer Time Elena Gilbert P.O.V I Watched Bonnie As She Pulled Her Heavy Suitcase with a Gorgeous Pink and White
Chapter One – Summer Time Elena Gilbert P.O.V I watched Bonnie as she pulled her heavy suitcase with a gorgeous pink and white lily flower design on the front of it out of the backseat of my mini cooper where we had dumped it when we got into my car back at the airport since my luggage had already taken up the whole boot of the car Bonnie had been very lucky I did have a back seat or she would be catching a cap wearing nothing but a pair of short denim short shorts with a white thick lace strap top and sandals and a large heavy suitcase followed with a very large cap fare and after spending the summer in France neither Bonnie or myself were high on funds. Bonnie closed the backseat door behind her and clicked up her long handle for her suitcase and dragged it slightly down the pavement before bending down into the open window of the passenger seat to lead in and talk to me before she headed into her house and saw her family. "Well that is certainly a summer I am going to be forgetting anytime soon" Bonnie said cheerfully. "You know what? I say we head back next summer and enjoy more days on the beach followed with beautiful meals cooked for us at night. What do you think?" I said padding my steering wheel with my fingers excited and up beat. "Sounds like a plan" Bonnie said and gave me a wink. "Hey, how about we meet Caroline at the grill tonight spend sometime with her see how she liked her summer with Matt and her dad" I suggested.

Palabras clave: sueño americano, vampiros, Crónicas Vampíricas, Estudios Cullturales, Estados Unidos ABSTRACT: Vampirism seems to be a recurring element in literature and audiovisual material, and lately these fanged creatures have moved on to TV series.

  • Matt and Elena First Date
From the Vampire Diaries: An Untold Tale A date . .with Elena Gilbert! Matt nervously opened his wallet again and counted his cash. A ten dollar bill and six cents left over from what the six neighbors on the cul- de-sac had given him to rake all the autumn leaves from each yard into a giant bonfire-pile. The rest had gone into buying this crisp new pair of casual/formal dress pants. Seven dollars and twenty cents left over from cleaning attics and mowing lawns—the rest of that money had been carefully invested in the jacket he was wearing right now—a lettermanʼs jacket wouldnʼt do, not on this occasion, and heʼd heard that Elena didnʼt like them. A ten dollar bill from helping Mr. Muldoon carefully change all the light bulbs in his house that the old gentleman couldnʼt reach any longer. Twenty-seven dollars and twenty-six cents . plus . He turned the wallet around and pulled it out from its special place of honor—a concealed compartment in the walletʼs side. And there it was, folded in half, as crisp and new-looking as when Uncle Joe had given it to him. MATT & ELENA: FIRST DATE: PART 1/Smith 2 A hundred dollar bill. He could remember Uncle Joe—Great-Uncle, really, but always called Uncle, pressing the bill into his hand while the nurses were out of the room. “Donʼt blow it on just anything,” Uncle Joe had whispered in his grating voice. “Keep it till a special occasion comes. Youʼll know when the time is right.

  • You Were Such a Good Girl When You Were Human”
RHONDA NICOL 10. “YOU WERE SUCH A GOOD GIRL WHEN YOU WERE HUMAN” Gender and Subversion in The Vampire Diaries No doubt due in large part to the phenomenal success of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, L. J. Smith’s beloved series of novels from the 1990s, The Vampire Diaries, was adapted for television by Kevin Williamson, previously best known for his writer-producer work on both the Scream film franchise and the television show Dawson’s Creek. Williamson knows both horror and teen angst, and the two come together in The Vampire Diaries television show, which had its broadcast premier on the CW in September 2009 and has, as of this writing, recently completed its fifth season. Although the television series obviously owes its existence at least in part to the Twilight Saga, it is also clearly influenced not only by its source material (Smith’s books) but also by the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BtVS), which set the standard for the vampires-in-high-school television show. In both the Twilight Saga and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the focus on the male vampire and his human female paramour serves to make the particular monstrousness of the vampire primarily masculine in nature. In The Vampire Diaries, the association is certainly not reversed, but it is mitigated, largely by interrogating cultural conceptions of “acceptable” female gender performance via its female characters’ shifting subject positions, primarily from human to vampire. As the series has developed, it has steadily increased its interrogation of the figure of the monstrous feminine, first by introducing Katherine (Nina Dobrev), Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) progenitor and Elena’s doppelgänger (also played by Nina Dobrev), as a nemesis and then by chronicling Elena’s own transition from human to vampire and its effects upon her relationship to and with Katherine.
