Peterson Religious Education, BYU Master of Arts The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides a multitude of leadership opportunities to its members. Although many valuable leadership training resources are available, the Book of Mormon is surprisingly absent as a source material on leadership. Written by and about leaders in the ancient Americas, it seems like the Book of Mormon should contain important principles on how to lead within the context of building God’s kingdom that could be instructive. The Book of Mormon was not preserved to teach modern leadership styles, nor does its usefulness depend on how it does or does not connect to these leadership theories. However, an analysis of the leadership qualities and practices exhibited by leaders in the Book of Mormon could help leaders in the Church to use the Book of Mormon for inspiration and guidance. This paper analyzed the leadership decisions exhibited by Captain Moroni and identified remarkable similarities to transformational leadership and its four components. Nephi, on the other hand, showed a servant leader mentality. Both of these leaders achieved remarkable levels of success, consistent with the current literature on both styles of leadership. Young Tonight I will talk about some of the lessons I’ve learned about religious liberty as I’ve worked in academics and government—I want to discuss how those lessons can teach us what needs to be done, and how we as committed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can fill those needs. I’ve spent 25 years as an academic studying Asian economic trends, political trends, and human rights, and I spent four years in government service in the George H. W. Bush administration. The timing in that administration gave me an opportunity to work closely on the issue of German unification as well as on some significant trade and human rights treaties.

(Some settlers realized there had been one). C. The Golden Plates revealed to Joseph that the Jaredites lived upon this land shortly after the tower of Babel, 2200 to 2000 B.C. 1. Archaeologists now agree there was a civilization at the time of the Jaredites. In North America scholars have given them the name "Adena," after property where remains were found. D. Joseph learned there were four civilizations including Lehi's people beginning at 600 B.C. 1. Archaeologists now agree that there was a separate, later civilization dated to the same time as Lehi. In North America, they are given the name the “Hopewell,” because evidences of their existence were first discovered upon land of a man named Hopewell. 2. A third civilization, the Mulekites, lived upon this land, arriving in a different area but dated from approximately the same time as Lehi.     King Benjamin and the Feast of Tabernacles John A. Tvedtnes A portion of the brass plates brought by Lehi to the New World contained the books of Moses (1 Nephi 5:10-13). Nephi and other Book of Mormon writers stressed that they obeyed the laws given therein: “And we did observe to keep the judgments, and the statutes, and the commandments of the Lord in all things according to the law of Moses” (2 Nephi 5:10). But aside from sacrice2 and the Ten Commandments,3 we have few explicit details regarding the Nephite observance of the Mosaic code. One would expect, for example, some mention of the festivals which played such an important role in the religious observances of ancient Israel. Though the Book of Mormon mentions no religious festivals by name, it does detail many signicant Nephite assemblies. One of the more noteworthy of the Nephite ceremonies was the coronation of the second Mosiah by his father, Benjamin.4 Some years ago, Professor Hugh Nibley outlined the similarities between this Book of Mormon account and ancient Middle Eastern coronation rites.5 He pointed out that these rites took place at the annual New Year festival, when the people were placed under covenant of obedience to the monarch. My own research further explores the Israelite coronation/New Year rites, and aims to complement other scholarly studies of the ceremonial context of Benjamin’s speech. THE SABBATICAL FEASTS In the sacred calendar, the Israelite new year began with the month of Abib (later called Nisan), in the spring (end March/beginning April).6 This month encompassed the feasts of Passover (beginning at sundown on the fourteenth day) and Unleavened Bread (fourteenth through twenty-first days), and included “holy convocations,” analogous to the Latter-day Saint April general conference (Leviticus 23:4-8).

The author proposes that the brother of Jared did, in fact, write those things down shortly before his death and then buried them, along with the interpreting stones, to be revealed to the world according to the timing of the Lord.
