Some of Bidwell’s accomplishments include 13 NJCAA Region XXI Division II championships and six appearances in the NJCAA DII Baseball World Series, which included a runner-up finish in 2010 when the Pointers finished the year 41-10. His coaching during that championship was recognized with Coach of the Tournament honors. In his first six seasons from 1982-87, Bidwell won the Connecticut Small College Conference Championship and quickly established himself as one of the best coaches in the region. In the Constitution State, Bidwell earned a handful of awards. In 2004 and again in 2011, he was named the Connecticut American Legion College Coach of the Year. Bidwell was also recognized time by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance in 2011, as he was given the Gold Key Award at the 70th annual Gold Key Dinner. Finally in 2012, the Pointers skipper was named to the Niantic American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. When he retired as the head coach of the baseball team in 2015, Bidwell was the sitting chair for the NJCAA Region XXI Baseball and Standard and Ethics Committees. He held each position since 1994 and 2000, respectively. Currently, Bidwell remains with UConn-Avery Point as their athletic director. IT WASN’T EVEN A QUESTION IF I WOULD BE A FAN: MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM FANDOM AND INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Communication, Technology, and Society by Lauren Leigh Watts May 2017 Accepted by: Dr. Angela N. Pratt, Committee Chair Dr. Stephanie Pangborn Dr. Darren Linvill ABSTRACT The current study aims to explore new avenues of fan studies and family communication research. Current research in both disciplines does not address in-depth how individuals become fans of certain sports teams and how family can play a role in the development of fandom. Communication scholars have explained that family legacies and stories are passed down through narratives, also known as family storytelling. Studies show that individuals come to know themselves and the world through family stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The Trash Can Banging Scandal Heard ‘Round the World Question To what extent, and in what ways, was the Houston Astros cheating scandal in the 2017 season effective in improving team performance? Introduction For the majority of the 2010’s, the Houston Astros were a very middle of the pack team. From 2010-2014, the team did not finish higher than 4th in their division. For most of their history, the Houston Astros participated in the National League Central Division, up until the 2013 season. Since the 2013 season, the Astros have competed in the American League West Division, where they have seen much more success. In 2011, the Astros, one of the worst teams in baseball with a record of 56-106, were sold to Jim Crane where he moved on from ex-GM Ed Wade, and hired Jeff Luhnow two days after the sale. While Ed Wade made some good decisions: debuting Jose Altuve in the 2011 season and drafting George Springer in the 2011 draft, his overall performance was not satisfactory for the new owner. The new GM, Jeff Luhnow, made some notable decisions as well, drafting Carlos Correa in the 2012 draft (debuting him in 2015) and drafting Alex Bregman in the 2015 draft (debuting him in the 2017 season). After another few unsuccessful seasons with records of 55-107, 51-111, and 70-92 in the 2012-2014 seasons, Jeff Luhnow decided to fire the current manager of the team, whom he had a Venkataraman and Bozzella 2 falling out with towards the end of the 2014 season.
