LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR The 2017 baseball season is the 47th for the University of Connecticut at Avery Point Program. A rich tradition started by Coach George Greer, his vision was to develop players for the UConn Baseball Program at Storrs; a job well done, as five starters on the 1979 UConn World Series team came from the Avery Point Program and Coach Greer. Since then, 54 players from Avery Point have gone on to play at UConn; a testament to the vision of Coach Greer.

The first championship team was in 1973, The Connecticut Small College Conference. The Conference was comprised of Stamford- UConn, Waterbury-UConn, Hartford-UConn, Waterbury Tech, Norwalk Tech, Post Junior College and Southeastern-UConn {Avery Point}. Avery Point won the CSCC for 15 consecutive years (1973-1987) before leaving the Conference and joining the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The NJCAA was part of my vision (1982-2015); national competition and recognition for the Avery Point program and players. This vision took time to achieve, but paid off with 13 New England NJCAA Divisions II Championships, 6 East District Championships, 6 World Series appearances, National Runner-up in 2010 and a 3rd place finish in 2015.

Since season one, UConn-Avery Point has had 17 NJCAA Division II All-Americans, 35 professional players, 3 Major Leaguers (Pete Walker, John McDonald and Rajai Davis) and 180 players continue to play at four-year collegiate programs. These accomplishments are nothing short of amazing for such humble beginnings. These achievements were also due to the dedication and commitments from the fine Assistant Coaches that have served the program: Bill Jerome, Jim Mullins, Kaye Pinhey, Bob DeMars, Pete Kiefer, Andy Walker, Ken Thibeault, Rob Mileski, Bob Russell, Chris Podeszwa, Pete Vincent, Gil Varjis, Tom Rossi, Marc Peluso, Jeff , Ed Harvey, Brad Olt, Mike Aldrich, Kyle Wilson and Dennis Long.

A great thanks to all the past coaches and players who have built the fine tradition of UConn-Avery Point Baseball into what it is today, and a great thanks to all the present coaches and players for what the program will become.

The best to the 2017 Avery Point Baseball Team, as many fine alumni and former coaches are following your season and wishing you continued success. Roger Bidwell Athletic Director UCAP Baseball Yearbook 2017- Page 6
