Principal DIET Wayanad 3 Wayanad Introduction Wayanad one of the loveliest stations of Kerala nestles among the mountains of the Western Ghats. This green paradise, located at a distance of 100 kms from the sea shore of Kozhikode, lies at a height of 700 - 1200 m. Above sea level on the north eastern part of the state. The present district of wayanad was carved out from the parts of Kozhikode and Kannur districts. and it came in to being on 1st november 1980 as the 12th District of Kerala. The name Wayanad is belived to be derived from the word ‘Vayal Nadu’ meaning the land of paddy fields. Most of the reserve forests in the state are in this district. A large percentage of the population are Tribals consisting of various sects like Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyas, Kurichiyas, Ooralis and Kattunaikens. This back ward district is perhaps, one of the biggest foriegn exchange earnes of the state, thanks to its cash crops like pepper, cardamom, coffee, Tea and other condiments. History The pictorial writings engraved on the walls of caves and evidences excavated from other places prompt that organised human life existed in Wayanad at least ten centuries before christ. Recorded history of this district is available from the 18th cen- tury. In ancient times this land was ruled by the Rajas of Veda Tribe. In later days, wayanad came under the rule of the Pazhassi Raja of Kottayan dynasty. When Hyder Ali became the ruler of Mysore, he invaded wayanad and brought it under his rule. In the days of Tipu, wayanad was restored to the Kottayam royal dynasty. But when Tipu, as a part of Sreerangapattanam Truce, handed over the entire malabar region to British, there started fierce encounters between the British and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam. Eventually when Raja killed himself, wayanad fell in to the hands of British. The British authorities opend up the plateau for cultivation of tea and other cash crops. Roads were laid across the dangerous slopes of wayanad from Kozhikode and Thalassery. Then roads were extended to Mysore and Ooty. settlers from all parts of kerala poured. In order to fulfill the aspirations of the people of wayanad for development, North Wayanad (For- merly a part of Kannur district) and South Wayanad (Formerly a part of Kozhikode district) were carved out and joined togother to form the present district of wayanad in 1980. 4 Sailent Features Topography The total geographical area of wayanad in 2126 Sq. kms. • Indian Workshop on Rice Kumbalanghi, Keralam December 9 -11, 2004 Organised By
Indian Workshop on Rice Kumbalanghi, Keralam December 9 -11, 2004 organised by With the Support of Thanal, L-14, Jawahar Nagar, Kawdiar P.O. Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam. India - 695 003 Tel / Fax: +91- 471-2727150. E-mail: [email protected] International Year of Rice Year International www.thanal.org Kumbalanghi Declaration On Sustaining Rice Declaration from the “Indian Workshop on Rice” December 9-11, 2004 In the Second International Year of Rice, 2004, we, the participants representing 57 organisations, primarily from rice growing states of India, working on sustainable ways of farming, environment, policy, consumer rights, farm labour having come together on a discussion on rice as part of our culture, as a basis for food security, and as a community heritage and having deliberated on the traditional practices of rice cultivation, problems facing its sustenance and the various initiatives in sustaining rice hereby recognize that 1. Genetically modified rice and lab-hybrid rice have no role in ensuring food security and sustaining rice in the country. On the contrary these are known to threaten the food sovereignty of the farmer community. 2. The green revolution has resulted in the destruction of agriculture and rural communities and has miserably failed in providing sufficient safe food and dignity of life. 3. Given the declining yields and harmful effects on human beings, plants, animals and environment health and the heavy losses to farmers, the dependence on chemical inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides should be phased out. Moreover, it is now proven beyond doubt that to ensure safe food and to sustain rice, pesticides are not required.
